3 AUDITIONS In this packet, you will find information about upcoming auditions in the Travis Tiger band. Please look over the materials carefully and feel free to contact us should you have any questions Audition Information
4 It is an honor and a privilege to be a member of the William B. Travis High School Band Program. The Tiger Band has a history of honor and success. We are looking forward to having you in our program to continue the tradition of excellence! Here s a little information on the upcoming auditions: Auditions at this time will be for band placement in the fall semester. Audition results will be posted sometime during the Summer. If you have any questions, please feel free to the directors. Playing Audition Details If you are currently in 8 th 11 th Grade All students will have an audition during their class time (JBMS & SMS) during May, A metronome is NOT required to be used, however scales should be performed at quarter note equals 120. You will be asked to perform as many of the 12 Major Scales as you can and your Chromatic Scale. (You do not have to play the arpeggios written on the page.) o You should consult the scale grading criteria page to understand how you will be scored. o You should try to perform the same ranges that are on the scale sheet in this packet. You will also be asked to perform a prepared etude included in this packet. The etude will begin very easy and become progressively more difficult in order to make it accessible to all students in grades 8 through 11. Scales have to be performed by memory. You may use your music in the case you re not as familiar with a scale but it will be for less points. Please fill out the attached information page PRIOR to your audition. Please write legibly. Spring Training Information Spring training will be the first opportunity for the 2018 Travis Tiger Band to perform. During this camp, all current 8 th 11 th grade students will work on fundamentals and music for the upcoming marching show. This event is required for all students entering the Travis Tiger Band program this This is a great opportunity for the incoming freshmen to begin making new friends with older members of the Travis Band! If you have any questions, please the directors. Dates are: Saturday April 21, AM-Noon Saturday May 21, AM-Noon Saturday May 21, 2018 Noon-2PM Registration required for parents/guardians
5 F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions) Q: What should I focus on when preparing my audition material? A: We realize that your preparation time is short, however, we are most interested in tone quality, technical and rhythmic accuracy, and musicianship. We are least interested in a tryout played too fast that sacrifices these qualities. We urge you to challenge yourself, but be reasonable when choosing tempos for your scales. Q: What if I get really nervous when I have to audition? A: We re on your side! We want you to just be yourself and do the best that you can. Take a deep breath before you play and then DO YOUR BEST! Q: If I play oboe or bassoon, will I still get to participate in marching band? A: YES! Every member of the Travis Band Program will get to participate in the marching band. Q: When will I find out how I did? A: Audition results will be posted during the summer. Q: When will I find out more information regarding the schedule of activities? A: As of now, all of our dates including concerts and summer rehearsals are on the charms calendar. Please go to our website at for the link to the charms calendar. Q: Are the summer practices that important? A: It is REQUIRED for you to attend the summer band rehearsals, and we cannot guarantee a spot in the competition block in the event you re not present. You will find yourself very behind if you do not attend. If you already know of a scheduling conflict please contact the directors. Q: I really would like to be involved in many activities in high school. Can I do these activities and still be in band? A: It is possible to participate in other organizations in addition to band. It will work with some, but not all athletic organizations. Travis HS offers numerous clubs for students to participate in. It is the responsibility of the student to choose additional organizations that will have minimal conflicts with the attendance requirements for the Travis Band. Q: What do I do if I lose my audition music? A: All audition material is also available for download on the THS Band website
6 Scale Grading Criteria 1: Made an attempt to play the scale but it is unrecognizable. 2: Tone quality may be poor and most of the notes are wrong, or the student did not finish the scale. 3: Some of the notes are correct. Tone quality may still be poor and the correct range may not have been performed. The performer had to stop or start over. 4: Most of the notes are correct, or the rhythm may be uneven. The wrong articulation pattern (tongue up/slur down) was used. Tone quality may not be refined, but would not be considered poor. The correct range was attempted, but may not have been completed. 5: All notes are correct. Rhythm is even or very close and the correct range was performed. Tone is developing properly, but may be fuzzy, thin, or inconsistent from register to register. Dynamic intensity may vary from note to note or from octave to octave. Instruments and reed are properly functioning. 5.5: The scale is starting to take on melodic characteristics, but may still present unrefined tone quality in the extreme registers. The first and last notes may be abrupt and the sound may be coarse. Vibrato may or may not be present. 6: Starts and articulation are clear and response in the extreme registers is beginning to exhibit some control, though inconsistencies may exist. Tone quality is decidedly characteristic, clear, and resonant, with closely matched registers. The last note is released with a sense of finality. Faster tempos are used and the scale is not perceived as slow. Vibrato on long notes is present, but is not necessarily performed effectively. The scale definitely has melodic direction. 6.5: Takes on most positive characteristics of a 6, but at a faster tempo. Inconsistencies in sound are negligible. There is very little smeariness or technique in the extreme registers. There are no blips present. The scale begins to take on a refined feeling : Tempos are approaching the maximum for the instrument. Tone quality is consistent and well-developed over the range of the scale. Vibrato is refined and mature. There are no smeary registers and the instrument is in perfect working condition. Inconsistencies in pitch over the range of the scale may be present to a small degree : Maximum tempo is used for your instrument and is performed convincingly. Articulation is characteristic and does not change in any register. Melodic tuning is nearly perfect. Finger/hand technique and wrist action cause no instrument noises that would be construed as distracting. The performance is perceived as effortless and takes on an individual personality. 9: All elements of musicality are present and performed in a convincing manner. The performer has complete control of the environment and performs all scales as if they were inter-related. 10: There are no discernible flaws to the most discriminating listener. The presentation takes on all positive characteristics of a professional performance. Chromatic Scale Performance Levels 0-9: Frequent errors; incorrect range; significant inconsistencies in tone quality; conservative tempo; multiple attempts : All notes are correct; correct range performed; minor to moderate inconsistencies in tone quality; moderate tempo : Tempos are approaching the maximum for the instrument; tone quality is characteristic and consistent over the range of the scale; technique is fluent and even : All positive characteristics previously identified are present. There are few or no discernible flaws in technique, tone, articulation, or phrase direction.
