OVERVIEW Education Queensland provides Instrumental Music staff in our school. This program provides tuition on Strings, Brass, Woodwind and Percussion instruments. Ensemble experience is provided through participation in Concert Band, String Ensemble and other smaller groups outside of school hours or during lunch breaks. Attendance at these groups is compulsory and an integral part of the Instrumental Music Program. Tuition classes take place on a small group basis with 3-7 students of similar ability level. OBJECTIVES The aims of the Instrumental Music program are: To provide opportunities for motivated musical students to develop instrumental skills via weekly group tuition and daily personal practice; To provide opportunities for such students to experience playing music in large and small groups; To provide an enriching dimension to the school s music program. STAFF ALLOCATION Instrumental music teachers are allocated to each school based on the number of students interested in participating. Our instrumental music staff in 2018 are: Annabel Taylor Instrumental Music Program Coordinator Jason Osman Woodwind, Brass, Percussion 2 days Richard Thompson Strings 1 day INSTRUMENT ALLOTMENT Students register their interest to be included in the instrumental program, not for a particular instrument. In selecting an appropriate instrument for a student, the following will be considered: The student s preferences and enthusiasm; The student s physical aptitudes; The student s music test results and sense of discipline; The school s needs in terms of ensemble balance; The parent/carer ability to assist in the supervision of home practice; The availability of a school instrument for loan; and The student s personality traits. Selection of new participants occurs in Years 2 and 3. Students enter the program at Year 4 for woodwind, brass and percussion, and Year 3 for strings. To maintain a progression, new student groups are rarely started at other times during the year or at other year levels except in particular circumstances. Due to the high demand on the resources available to the school, the number of students who can participate in the instrumental music program is limited. It is therefore necessary to operate a selection process for admission to the program. TUITION Lessons are timetabled on a rotating basis during the school term to limit interruption to the child s learning. Participating students and all staff members are provided with the instrumental lesson timetable at the commencement of each term. 2

Students are responsible for excusing themselves from their normal classrooms in time to avoid arriving late for their lessons at the designated practice venue. They are also responsible for making up the class work missed during their instrumental lesson. REHEARSALS Parents and students are notified of rehearsal times at the beginning of the school year by the instrumental music staff. Each ensemble rehearses once a week, typically on the day their lesson occurs. Extra rehearsal times may be required due to performance commitments throughout the school year. Parents of children who are already involved in regular morning or afternoon programs must negotiate attendance with their teachers and may need to consider carefully whether a commitment to the instrumental music program is recommended. STRINGS PROGRAM Students in year 2 are recruited to commence group tuition in Year 3. Year 3 Junior String Ensemble (commences in Term 2) Year 4-6 Senior String Ensemble Year 7-12 Chamber Strings All string ensembles rehearse separately once per week. BAND PROGRAM Students in year 3 are recruited to commence group tuition in Year 4. Year 4 Junior Concert Band (commences in Term 2) Year 5+ Senior Concert Band All bands rehearse separately once per week. ASSESSMENT Students in the Instrumental Music Program progress through Education Queensland s Instrumental Music Syllabus. The Curriculum is structured in levels, each of which includes areas of learning and skill development. Instrumental music teachers plan their teaching programs and assessment around the Instrumental Music Syllabus. Students are assessed on their instrument in lesson time. The assessment item/s which the student must perform as assigned by the instrumental music teacher will be recorded and may be considered for moderation submissions. Progress Reports Parents will receive a written progress report twice per year, at the end of each semester with their One School Reports. Students in the Primary School will be reported on in two categories: Effort: A E This is a combination of attendance record, in-class work and practice record. Achievement: A E This is a reflection of how well the student performs set assessment on their instrument. Teachers look for correct rhythms, key signatures, dynamics and musicality at their level. Students will also receive comments relating to the three curriculum areas for Literacy, Technique and Reporting. 3

Homework Sheet Regular communication takes place via a Homework Sheet brought to each lesson and signed weekly by parents and instrumental music teachers. Parents will be notified should a student not be performing to an acceptable standard or if there is a lack of practice, irregular attendance, poor punctuality or attitude. If the identified problem is not rectified in a short period of time, the student may be excluded from the program. Notice of exclusion will be issued to the parents. Parents are invited to be involved by communicating with the instrumental music staff regarding the progress of their child. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC RESOURCE SCHEME Parent contribution for participating students of the Instrumental Music Resource Scheme for 2018 is as follows: Music Participation payment (all students) $25 School Instrument Hire (First Year) $50 School Instrument Hire (Second Year) $75 School Instrument Hire (Third Year) $100 Percussion Levy (all percussionists) $25 These funds contribute towards servicing and upgrading school instruments, providing sheet music to students. This does not include other costs incurred for performances. Payments for the 2018 Program must be made in full by the end of week 6 of term 1. Instruments will not be allocated to students until full payment is received. If you are experiencing financial hardship please accounts@woodcrestsc.eq.edu.au to make payment plan arrangements. Hiring - Band There is a full set of concert band instruments for students to hire in their first year of tuition. Parents are required to purchase an instrument in the second year of the program. There are some larger expensive instruments that are available for extended hire including baritone saxophone and tuba. The percussion instruments used at school in rehearsal and lessons are not able to be taken home by students. Hiring - Strings There are violins, violas, and cellos for students to hire in their first year of tuition. Parents are required to purchase an instrument in the second year of the program. Double basses are available for extended hire. STUDENT AND PARENT COMMITMENTS To support the student s efforts, the parents must be prepared to: Supervise regular practice; Ensure regular attendance at lessons and rehearsals Oversee the care of the instrument; and Replace accessories as necessary, e.g. reeds, valve oil, sheet music, strings, etc. 4

While the instrument brands recommended above may, in some cases, be a little more expensive initially, all these instruments have stood the test of time; rarely going out of adjustment and wearing well. These brands also tend to have very good resale value. The first brand listed for each instrument is preferable. Note: If you have access to another brand instrument, please consult your instrumental teacher before you buy. Avoid purchasing instruments from generic shops that are not music specialists. Purchasing instruments from the internet can be very risky. It is not recommended. Care must be taken when considering the purchase of a second hand instrument. It is always best to have your instrumental teacher or a professional repairer look over the instrument before you purchase. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING A SECOND HAND INSTRUMENT FLUTE Check there are not too many dints. Check the plating to ensure it is not too worn. Check the cork/felt bumpers. 14 Instrumental Music Terms and Conditions Student Responsibilities: 1. Care and safe keeping of the instrument at school (class time, lessons, rehearsals, concerts), at home; and in transit. Parent Responsibilities: 1. Pay invoice in full by the end of week 6 in term Collect the instrument at the beginning of the school year and return the instrument in the same condition to the instrumental music teacher. 3. If the instrument sustains any damage, then the parent will inform the school office and instrumental music teacher; return the instrument to the office; and pay for the repair of the instrument. Parents can submit further quotes on repair if required. 4. In the case of string instruments, if the strings, bridge or bow break they are the parent s responsibility to repair/replace and they do not need to be done with consultation with the school 5. In the case of an instrument being broken beyond repair, the parents are expected to pay for a replacement instrument, however, the school is required to obtain quotes. 6. It is advisable for parents to cover the instrument under House and Contents Insurance for the term of the loan. School Responsibilities: 1. In the case of a damaged instrument, the school will obtain a quote and send the instrument for repair. The school will then invoice the parent before the release of the instrument to the student. 2. If the instrument case suffers from wear and tear, then the school will repair/replace the case unless negligence on the part of the person hiring is proven. 3. Replace a broken instrument with the parent contributing to the quoted payment. WITHDRAWAL FROM PROGRAM 1. Student progress report: a. The instrumental teacher will comment on the Semester 1 report. If progress has been limited, the parents will be asked to reconsider the continued involvement of their child. 2. The student wanting to be withdrawn from the program: a. Parents to inform the instrumental music teacher and Head of Department Arts in writing secondary.office@woodcrestsc.eq.edu.au b. An interview with the parents and Head of Department - Arts. c. If accepted, parent s letter kept on file and loan agreement cancelled (if applicable). Instrument returned to instrumental music teacher. 13

PRACTISING YOUR INSTRUMENT: Thoughts for Students What You Will Need 1. Instrument; 2. Music; 3. Music stand (percussionists use glockenspiel); 4. Chair with straight back (standing is best for wind players); and 5. Pencil and eraser. Where to Practise Practising should be done in an area that is free from distractions away from the TV, radio, stereo and family traffic. Good lighting, a straight backed chair, a mirror and a music stand are important. Clarinet and saxophone players should have two or three good reeds available. What to practise For some students you can go as far as allocating specific time intervals to certain segments of the sessions but it should include warm-ups, scales, flexibility exercises, technical work from the textbook, specific pieces of music (solo or ensemble) and anything else required. Students are required to use the home practice sheet. Practise the music stopping to correct mistakes WHERE THEY OCCUR. Zero in on the problems. Prepare the Session Set goals to be accomplished. Develop a warm-up routine. If preparing for exams, review relevant technical work and scales Before playing a new piece of music: o Check key signature, time signature, tempo and dynamic markings. o Check all other markings, use the glossary in Essential Elements where necessary. o Scan the music then read it again more carefully. o With your pencil, mark unusual fingerings, accidentals, and rhythms that may be troublesome. o Go over measures with difficult or unusual rhythms. If you have problems, you could try to: o Write out the counting. o Count out loud (use a metronome). o Count and clap the rhythm (use rhythm names). o Play the rhythm on the one pitch. o Play as written slowly and accurately at first then increase speed. Practising: Thoughts for Parents His/her progress will depend on what is achieved during daily practice sessions at home. Learning takes place in school, but proficiency is gained at home. You can use the following guidelines to help your child at home. Time Schedule Establish a weekly practice schedule with your child. Practising at the same time every day is good, but flexibility should be built into the schedule. If the situation merits, re-schedule the practice session to an earlier or later time. 14

How Long to Practise - Strings Year 3 10 minutes per day five days a week in Semester 1 15 minutes per day five days a week in Semester 2 Year 4 & 5 20 minutes per day five days a week Year minutes per day five days a week Pacing the session is important. Play and rest in regular intervals. How Long to Practise Band Year 4 10 minutes per day five days a week in Semester minutes per day five days a week in Semester 2 Years 5 & 6 20 minutes per day five days a week Years minutes per day five days a week Pacing the session is important. Play and rest in regular intervals. Practice Goals While a sufficient amount of time per day is important, it is also important to have definite goals in mind for each session. These goals might include the improvement of tone on one note or the ability to play a lengthy tune or exercise without a mistake. As your child gains experience on the instrument, a typical practice session might be broken down as follows: No. of Minutes Material Practised Goal 3-5 Long tones; easy drills at slow tempo Warm up of embouchure, breath and instrument; concentrating on producing good tone. Working on Using whole straight bows. 5 Scales learned Finger co-ordination. 10 New material Development of new notes, increased range, new rhythms and articulations, new key signatures. 10 Exercises and tunes already learned Improvement of finger movement, rhythm and overall fluency. Is Your Child Progressing? The field of instrumental music is new for your child. He/she is learning to use facial muscles in a different way, and breathing apparatus for a different purpose. There is a new language of intangible symbols (notes) that require the use of mind and body to translate into musical sounds. All this takes time. Parents can evaluate practice sessions by asking themselves: Am I hearing attempts at new material (such as higher notes, lower notes, new rhythms and new articulations). Or am I hearing the same old tune day after day? Is the tone quality becoming more characteristic of the instrument or is the tone harsh, unmusical and unpleasant? Does the familiar tune or exercise move along steadily in a fluent rhythmic manner; or is it halting and jerky? If you reach a point when your evaluation consistently comes up negative, please contact the Instrumental Music Coordinator. The student may be doing fine by beginning standards; he/she may be having difficulty in grasping the basic concept that could bring progress to a halt. This last problem may take a joint parent-teacher effort to overcome. Encouraging Your Child Spend some time listening to your child practising. Offer constructive criticisms, but choose your words carefully e.g. That sounds better today. 15
