This presentation will be almost exclusively interactive allowing participants the chance to learn songs, improvise, and compose with the harmonica. Harmonicas will be available to play Wind Section 101 for Jazz Ensembles Presented by Mr. Doug Beach of Elmhurst College, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band and sponsored by Music & Arts Room C222 Second Floor Cohesiveness in the wind section is essential to a successful jazz ensemble. Topics will include articulation, the importance of time, balance, blend and the roles of various musicians in the sections. Main Gym Room 226 Second Floor This session will include a discussion on scheduling options for full orchestra and how to make the most of this situation. Band and Orchestra directors are in constant search for the right balance between how often the winds participate in orchestra. Drum Set Out-Of-The Box Presented by Mr. Russell Saunders, Pearl Drums Assembly, tuning, care, maintenance and basic grooves 10:45-11:45 the music education now with live audio recording and MIDI input. This session will demonstrate a variety of these cloud-based music apps accessible from Chromebooks, tablets, and a laptop and web browser. We will review some of the newest applications which include new software from the MusicFirst curriculum with its extensive repertoire of music applications. A list of music apps available for both Android and ios and from any Chromebook or web browser will be shared so you can continue to explore after the session. Elementary Essentials for Exceptionalities Several years ago I began early childhood/elementary field experiences with students who have various abilities. Many of the students have autism spectrum disorder and all are working on communication. I will share experiences and materials that work for us. This session will include discussion and examples of how to move the concept to a general music classroom, using instruments, and also for a variety of age groups. Students love the ukulele; find out why, and how to use it to add to your program! German Pedagogy for an American Classic: A Unique Approach to Harmonica Education Room C222 Second Floor Recently, Prosek traveled to Germany to conduct a curricular inquiry on best practice for teaching harmonica. Learn about how to use this tool in your classroom in an innovative and interact presentation. There are many approaches and techniques, but how do you know what works best for your ensemble? This clinic will discuss many practical techniques and strategies for intonation at an individual and ensemble level. Attendees will leave with definite steps to improve individual and group intonation in their ensembles. Discuss how to teach rhythm and pulse using 11:45-12:30 LUNCH 12:30-1:30 Including Students with Disabilities in Instrumental Ensembles Find the answers to those questions you have about how to include students with disabilities in performing ensembles. In addition to providing students with specific tools, changes to the curriculum are often needed. As time is a needed resource, this session will encourage you to find help. However, motivation is often needed for students with disabilities. Many of these ideas will work for typical students too. Therefore, as you learn to work with students with disabilities, you will also encourage all students to practice and improve. FROM THE DESKTOP TO THE CLOUD: The Expanding World of Music Notation Applications Presented by Dr. David Williams and Sponsored by Music & Arts Room F205 Second Floor for notating music from a computing device are greatly expanding from these traditional tools. Grab a Chromebook, a tablet (Android or ios), or a laptop and choose traditional and non-traditional software for notating creative music projects even graphic notation for elementary and beginning student activities. This session will briefly highlight some new features for the latest releases of Sibelius and Finale. Then, we will sample a host of other options for creative notation activities from the Cloud or from a tablet. Notion, Noteflight, NotateMe, and Composer s SketchPad are just a few of the software titles to be reviewed in this session. And, we will look at some options that can be used to create your own music practice materials. A list of the demonstrated music software will be available so you can continue to explore after the session. Basic Ukulele Technique Presented by Paul Marchese and Sponsored by Music & Arts This is a repeat of the 9:30AM Session. Bowing Concepts for Musical Phrasing Library Second Floor Room C226 Second Floor front of the orchestra will also find this session helpful. Let s call it basic concepts taken to a new level. String players are presented with many challenges when it comes to finding the right bowing to preserve the musical phrase. This is especially true when the note values are not consistent. Playing down bow for two counts and up bow for one count creates an opportunity for an accent which may not fit the musical idea. I will present specific examples in standard repertoire along with suggestions to allow for a musical phrase. The goal is simple, hear how you want the phrase to sound, find the best bowing option, and then (the hard part) listen to make sure you performed the phrase the way you heard it in your head. Too often, string players play with unwanted accents or allow their bow to dictate the dynamics and accents. It must be the other way around. Make the bow work to create the phrase. 1:45-2:45 The Secrets of Teaching Flute Vibrato Presented by Dr. Cate Hummel and Sponsored by Jupiter Band Instruments and Music & Arts. Room C218 Second Floor We will examine the mechanics of generating flute vibrato and exercises for teaching the mechanics of vibrato.
