3 Through the Looking Glass PROGRAM NOTES Composer Jess Turner describes his fanfare, Through the Looking Glass, as a concert opener, bringing the audience into the musical world created by the concert they are about to hear. In this way, this piece acts in a similar manner to the looking glass through which Alice was able to gain access to her wonderland. The entire three minutes of the piece consists of only five different pitches that are constantly reconfigured into running passages, driving ostinati, and thrilling fanfares. Ballad for Band Program note by Paul Bhasin. Composing is my life blood, said Pulitzer Prize winning composer Morton Gould. That is basically me, and although I have done many things in my life conducting, playing piano, and so on what is fundamental is my being a composer. Capping a life full of achievements in all facets of music are Morton Gould s 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Stringmusic, commissioned by the National Symphony for the final season of music director Mstislav Rostropovich and his 1994 Kennedy Center Honor in recognition of lifetime contributions to American culture. Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on December 10, 1913, Gould was recognized as a child prodigy based on his improvisation and composition skills. He published his first work at age six and went on to study at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School). His most important teachers, however were Abby Whiteside (piano) and Vincent Jones (composition). During the Depression, Gould (still a teenager) found work in New York s vaudeville and movie theaters. Gould was the first staff pianist for Radio City Music Hall and by age 21 he was conducting and arranging a series of orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio. Gould attained national prominence through his work in radio, as he appealed to a wide-ranging audience with his combination of classical and popular programming. During the 1940s, Gould appeared on the Cresta Blanca Carnival program and The Chrysler Hour (CBS), reaching an audience of millions. Ballad for Band was composed in It is loosely based on the stylistic elements of the Negro spiritual, but does not contain any direct quotes from that literature. It is, instead, an original expression of what Gould called the Negro folklore idiom that intrigued him as a composer. The spirituals have always been the essence, in many ways, of our musical art, our musical spirit. The spiritual is an emotional, rhythmic expression. The spiritual has a universal feeling; it comes from the soul, from the gut. Program note excerpted from An American Salute liner notes by The President s Own United States Marine Band. 3

4 Russian Christmas Music On his work, Russian Christmas Music, the composer Alfred Reed writes, Originally written in November 1944, Russian Christmas Music was first performed in December of that year at a special concert in Denver, Colorado, by a select group of musicians from five of the leading service bands stationed in that area. Two years later, the music was revised and somewhat enlarged, and in this form was one of the three prize-winning works in the 1947 Columbia University contest for new, serious music for the symphonic band. First performances of this second version subsequently took place in 1948; the first, by the Juilliard Band under Donald I. Moore, and the second by the Syracuse University Symphonic Band under Harwood Simmons, to whom the work was dedicated. An ancient Russian Christmas carol (Carol of the Little Russian Children), together with a good deal of original material and some motivic elements derived from the liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church, forms the basis for this musical impression of Old Russia during the jubilant Christmas season. Although cast in the form of a single, continuous movement, four distinct sections may be easily recognized, which the composer originally subtitled: Children s Carol, Antiphonal Chant, Village Song, and the closing Cathedral Chorus. Program note by Paul Bhasin. Karelia Overture, op. 10 Karelia is a region located along the Finnish-Russian border. As such, it was long an area of contention between Finland, Russia, and Sweden as well. Karelia is also celebrated as a seat of Finnish culture and folklore. Many artists, Jean Sibelius included, traveled to Karelia to study the region s traditions and forms of expression. On November 13, 1893, the Viborg Students Society at Helsinki University staged a gala to fund education initiatives in Karelia. The society requested Sibelius to compose music to accompany a series of tableaus depicting pivotal moments in Karelian history. Sibelius responded with an overture and seven additional numbers. The overture was published as the composer s op. 10. The Karelia Suite, op. 11, comprises three of the tableau pieces. The Karelia Overture is based upon a trio of principal themes. The first, energetic and optimistic, is presented at the outset. The key shifts from C major to E minor, as the strings introduce the introspective, cantabile second theme. The horns announce the final theme, a vibrant martial episode. A brief development and varied restatement of the themes lead to the Karelia Overture s triumphant close. Capriccio espagnol, op. 34 Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his brilliant Capriccio espagnol in summer For some time, the Russian composer had been occupied with the orchestration of his opera, Prince Igor. However, according to Rimsky-Korsakov: 4

5 In the middle of the summer this work was interrupted: I composed the Spanish Capriccio from the sketches of my projected virtuoso violin fantasy on Spanish themes. According to my plans the Capriccio was to glitter with dazzling color, and manifestly, I had not been wrong. It was Rimsky-Korsakov who led the October 31, 1887, premiere of his Capriccio espagnol. The concert took place at the Small Theater in St. Petersburg, as part of the Russian Musical Society s concert series. Rimsky- Korsakov conducted the orchestra of the Imperial Russian Opera House. The concert, according to Rimsky-Korsakov, was played with a perfection and enthusiasm the like of which it never possessed subsequently.... Despite its length, the composition called forth an insistent encore. Rimsky-Korsakov has long been hailed as one of the masters of orchestration. The composer himself acknowledged that the Capriccio espagnol, along with Scheherazade (1888) and the Russian Easter Overture (1888), marked the culmination of a period in which my orchestration had reached a considerable degree of virtuosity and bright sonority. The five movements are played without pause. I. Alborada. Vivo e strepitoso The Capriccio espagnol opens with a scintillating Alborada (an aubade, or morning serenade). II. Variations. Andante con moto The horn introduces a languid, dolce theme that serves as the basis for a series of variations, showcasing the orchestra s wide range of colors. III. Alborada. Vivo e strepitoso The third movement offers a repetition of the opening Alborada, now transposed from A to B-flat major. IV. Scene and Gypsy Song. Allegretto A roll of the snare drum introduces a series of cadenzas for the horns and trumpets, violin, flute and clarinet, and harp. A vibrant Gypsy song dominates the latter part of the movement, gathering impressive momentum as it proceeds directly to the finale. V. Fandango of the Asturias The final movement opens with a fandango, a lively dance in triple meter. The Gypsy song briefly returns, as does the opening Alborada, bringing the Capriccio espagnol to a dazzling Presto conclusion. Program notes by Ken Meltzer, unless otherwise indicated. PAUL BHASIN, CONDUCTOR Paul Bhasin serves on the faculty of Emory University as director of wind studies and interim director of orchestral studies. In this capacity, he conducts the Emory University Symphony Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Emory Wind Ensemble, and he teaches conducting.
