1 Syllabus: Vocal Lab CE 6140N 01 SPRING 2016 SSyll Continuing [Pick the Education date][type the sender company name] Course Information: Location: Merriam Theater Building, Room 512 Dates: Mondays, Feb 1 Apr 11, 2016 Note: No class on March 8 for UArts Spring Break Instructor Information: Name: Nicole Tranquillo NTranquillo@uarts.edu Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, Nicole Tranquillo earned her BM in Vocal Performance from The University of the Arts in During her time as an undergraduate, she performed in such venues as The Kimmel Center, The Merriam Theatre, the TLA, World Café Live, and much more. During her junior year of college, Nicole Tranquillo was a Top 24 contestant on Season 6 of the hit TV show American Idol. She has also opened up for The Roots on their tour stop in Pittsburgh, as well as during The Roots Picnic held at the TLA in June While living in Philadelphia, she also had the opportunity to open up for popular hip-hop artists Wale and Snoop Dogg on separate occasions. Mostly recently, Tranquillo has been primarily working as a songwriter for both Asia territory and U.S. artists. Living a bi-coastal life between Philadelphia, NYC and LA, she has been tirelessly working in the studio with such producers as!llmind (Drake, Kanye West, Skyzoo), Lifted (Kanye West, Big Sean), The Elev3n (Karmin, Meghan Trainor), Sarom (Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Enrique Inglesias), and countless others. In April 2012, she had her first release in Japan with the popular girl group, Fairies, called Beat Generation, which debuted at #3 on the charts. After her first release, she signed with SONGS Publishing as a songwriter, and since has been writing hits for mega pop artist Namie Amuro in Japan, as well as other U.S. artists. Nicole Tranquillo s song Ur Love Is Poison was released in July 2013 by Namie and debuted at #1. Most recently, she penned a song that debuted with the pop female duo, FEMM, which released worldwide and reached the #1 position in multi-countries. In addition to songwriting, Nicole Tranquillo has also been called upon for demo work for the hit NBC show Smash, Disney s Shake It Up, and various songs for the WWE Network. Tranquillo also spends her time on the Voice Department Faculty at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA and regularly entertains and performs in the tri-state area. Course Description: Vocal Lab is designed as an introductory course to the fundamentals of singing, using the voice as an instrument. In this class, students can expect to learn basic technique and instruction of the voice, as well as proper breathing, tone placement, and performance techniques. Course Overview: Students will demonstrate their progress in class on a weekly basis using the following: Basic technical skill through weekly assignments Performance of assigned repertoire Application of instructor s feedback At the end of this course, students will have the basic knowledge and understanding of the voice and will have the foundation set in order to achieve proper vocal technique.

Additional Course Materials Supplies Students will be assigned weekly repertoire and daily vocal assignments that they will be expected to learn and perform. This music must be brought to class each week. In addition, it is necessary to have paper, blank staff paper, pencil, and water with the student for every class. C OURSE ACTI V ITIE S Weekly performances, critiques, and practice will be a part of this course and will be used as a learning method for students to give and receive constructive feedback to eachother in performance practice. C OURSE POLIC IES Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal.
