2 I already feel a huge difference in terms of my confidence thanks to the fantastic tutors and a lovely group of singers. The experience has completely revived my love of singing participant introduction The New Generation Festival Summer School is a 10-day intensive training and performance programme for young aspiring singers at conservatoire level. Participants study with leading professional teachers and coaches from major UK conservatoires and training institutions such as the National Opera Studio and the Royal Opera House s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme. Daily in-depth individual coaching sessions and voice lessons are supplemented with performance classes, performance psychology workshops, a public masterclass and a lunchtime concert. The timetable is carefully organised to provide each student with equal teaching time and performance opportunities. All Summer School participants enjoy the unique experience of being part of the chorus of the New Generation Festival main stage productions in the Gardens of the Palazzo Corsini al Prato working closely with leading young artists from across the globe.

Lessons and classes will take place on site. Performances take place in the Gardens of the Palazzo Corsini al Prato. Transport to be organised independently. Accommodation is provided 22 August - 1 September. Participants will perform in the chorus of Le nozze di Figaro. All staging and musical work will take place on the 23 and 24 August with main classes for participants starting on 26 August. 4 dr ralph strehle HEAD OF SUMMER SCHOOL AND PERFORMANCE COACH Ralph is Associate Head of Vocal Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where his main interests lie in generating, implementing and monitoring strategies and structures for the artistic and professional development of singers at conservatoire and post-conservatoire level. A sought-after performance coach, he specialises in audition and competition preparation, designs individual psychological skills training programmes, offers peak performance workshops and career management. Having worked as a classically trained singer in Europe and the UK, Ralph s first-hand performance experience provides him with unique insights into a musician s mindset and informs all aspects of his coaching. Ralph is currently writing his second PhD in the field of performance motivation. As well as working with individual clients, Ralph has coached at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Rostov State Rachmaninov Conservatoire, the National Opera Studio and the New Generation Festival. julia lynch RÉPÉTITEUR AND VOCAL COACH Born in Dublin and raised in Aberdeen, Julia began piano lessons at the age of four, studying with Denis Matthews and David Parkhouse at the North East Scotland Music School. In 1982, Julia won a scholarship to study piano at the RSAMD in Glasgow with Laurence Glover. Whilst a student at the academy, she won all the available prizes for piano solo, accompaniment and chamber music. Having gained her BA and completed a year of postgraduate study, Julia joined the staff of the academy as vocal coach, a post she still holds. Julia is one of the busiest accompanists in the country, appearing in recital with many distinguished artists. Concerts have taken her all over the world, with recitals in London, Tokyo and Geneva, as well as appearances at the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh International Festival and Cardiff Singer of the World. She appears as orchestra pianist with the BBC SSO, the RSNO and SCO, and broadcasts and records regularly. Until 2016, Julia was music assistant to Eberhard Friedrich at the Bayreuther Festspiele in Germany. Along with Malcolm Martineau and Tom Allen, Julia is proud to be associated with the Samling Foundation, furthering the talents of a new generation of singers.

5 jane irwin VOCAL TUTOR Jane Irwin is vocal tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester within the School of Vocal Studies and Opera. She is in regular demand in masterclasses and workshops including the Abingdon Sumer School for Solo Singers, the New Generation Festival Summer School and the summer schools at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. As a concert and recital singer she has appeared regularly in the UK, Europe and USA. In 2002, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony under Mariss Jansons, and has sung for the BBC Proms, at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Berlin Festival, the Concertgebouw and the Musikverein. She has worked with the Berlin Symphony, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre de Paris, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, American Symphony, Seattle Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Swedish Chamber, Spanish National, Zurich Tonhalle, Philharmonia, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, Royal Scottish National and Hallé Orchestras, and with conductors Myung Whun Chung, Sir Simon Rattle, Günther Herbig, Semyon Bychkov, Ivor Bolton, Andrew Davis, Libor Pesek, Donald Runnicles, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sakari Oramo, Sir Mark Elder, Matthias Bamert, Trevor Pinnock, Petr Altrichter, Paul Daniel, Joseph Swensen, Sir Richard Armstrong and Jakov Kreizberg. scott johnson VOCAL TUTOR Before becoming a full-time lecturer in Vocal Studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Scott was a tutor at the Conservatoire du Kremlin-Bicêtre in Paris and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD) in London. He studied voice at the GSMD under David Pollard and subsequently completed a PGCE and MA (graduating with Distinction) at University College London s Institute of Education. At RCS he works with students from the BMus, MMus Performance and Opera courses and teaches classes in vocal pedagogy, performance and French repertoire. Beyond this he maintains a passionate interest in current and historical pedagogical perspectives on vocal performance, including an interest in the role that technology may have to play in enhancing training for singers. He has adjudicated at several competitions and music festivals and is a regular tutor at summer schools in Europe and the UK.

6 sergey rybin RÉPÉTITEUR Sergey Rybin was born in the city of Tomsk in Siberia. He began playing the piano aged 7, studying at the specialised music school for gifted children, attached to the Conservatoire of Novosibirsk. Subsequently, he studied at the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, where, after gaining a PhD., he became Professor of Piano and taught for four years. Since completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London (RAM) under the tutelage of Malcolm Martineau, Sergey has worked extensively for City of Birmingham Opera, English Touring Opera, Garsington Opera, Opera Holland Park and Grange Park Opera. As a recitalist, he has performed at the Leeds Lieder+ Festival, Hampstead and Highgate Festival, Beaminster Festival and in other prominent venues in the UK alongside Joan Rodgers, Justina Gringyte, Katherine Broderick, Nelly Miricioiu, Sergey Leiferkus and others. Sergey has been elected an Associate of RAM and joined the coaching staff of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (ROH). After working as chief répétiteur on the ROH s production of Eugene Onegin as part of the 2015/6 season, and joining the music staff team for the subsequent productions of Lucia di Lammermoor and Nabucco, Sergey returned to the ROH for the 2016/7 season productions of The Nose, Les Contes d Hoffmann and Der Rosenkavalier. He also participated in rehearsals of Khovanschina at Welsh National Opera, performed at the Oxford Lieder Festival with Katherine Broderick and returned to the ROH again for Lucia di Lammermoor. Last season, Sergey worked on Der Rosenkavalier at Glyndebourne and both Don Giovanni and Henry V at the 2018 New Generation Festival. ailie crerar WORKSHOP LEADER Ailie Crerar is an independent performance producer and festival manager based in Glasgow. She works to support artists to present their work, with a particular interest in championing women and tackling under-representation within the arts. As well as Mascarade Opera Studio, she has delivered projects for the National Theatre of Scotland, Glasgow International, Paisley Opera, Soundplay Projects, Wonder Fools Theatre Company, Brite Theater, Puppet Animation Scotland, and Festivals Edinburgh. She has previously held positions as Communications Officer for Glasgow s Centre for Contemporary Arts, managing social media and digital marketing for over 1,000 arts events each year, and as Press Officer for the Glasgow Film Festival. Ailie is currently also a Director of the Workers Theatre, a project to create a co-operatively owned and managed venue in Scotland.
