4 Artistic Director Welcome This 2017 program marks a special personal milestone for me, being my 10th year as Artistic Director. Since moving to Perth in 2000 and first auditioning for WAYJO in 2001, this city and this organisation has been very kind to me. I have met many life long friends through WAYJO and still perform regularly with many band mates. We are very lucky to have a dedicated big band organisation here in Perth and it has been an honour to be a part of it over all these years sees WAYJO again giving WA audiences a real variety of experiences, programming and venues. We will be performing at a range of spaces including a stronger presence at His Majesty s Theatre with our guest artist series based the Maj, the Quarry Amphitheatre and The Fly By Night in Fremantle. I invite you to study our program and get excited by the range and number of concerts we have to offer you in It is another bumper year with three really great 18-piece big bands! Every year it is exciting to see the mix of new musicians in the bands with repeat offenders, making life long friendships and developing a love and appreciation for this art form. There is so much talent and opportunity in this great city and I look forward to the day when I read the Artistic Director s welcome from one of these current WAYJO musicians - that will make me very happy! 35 Message from the General Manager Simon Keen It is a rare privilege to be in a position to oversee a company that gives so much to young artists in their development and brings the joy of music to a diverse range of communities. Throughout its storied history, WAYJO has worked with the leading lights of the jazz world, offered extraordinary opportunities to our musicians, and reached thousands of people at our ticketed and free performances, at schools, through workshops, and across the oceans in a number of countries. WAYJO relies on the support of our government funders, corporate partners, and donations large and small to continue delivering our annual program of events. We are grateful for every contribution made, however we are continually seeking new ways to source partners to fund our work. From our 240 Club, begun in 2016, to our annual giving campaign, generous donations form the lifeblood of our operations. Our corporate partners benefit from alignment with WAYJO musicians and their work, and we recognise the funding we receive from government at all levels to support our events. We know that WAYJO s family of supporters is passionate about our work, and we ask that you keep that passion alive by advocating for us at every opportunity. Tell your friends, colleagues and relatives about us, invite them to our shows, and give them a copy of this brochure. We ve got big plans for our 35th anniversary in 2018, and we need your help to generate awareness of what our musicians can accomplish and further develop our support base. I am proud of the work our young musicians and composers produce on a consistent basis, and we want more people to experience what WAYJO has to offer. Here s to a fantastic 2017 season and beyond. 35

Donations can be made in a lump sum, or a regularly scheduled $20 direct debit per month. Less than a dollar a day (or your favourite coffee once a week) does not sound like much, however the combined total of 240 Club donations allows WAYJO to program our guest artists, our free community events, and cover the costs for our weekly rehearsal program. 240 Club members will receive special access to WAYJO in 2017, from invitations to special rehearsals, one-off recordings, and introductions to guest artists when attending their events.
