ENTRY AGREEMENTS: Upon entering the annual United States Open Music Competition, contestants and their families: (1) assign USOMC, and only USOMC, all rights to use any photographs or video recordings, or interviews of any USOMC events for any purpose, without compensation; and (2) permit USOMC the right to provide to Steinway & Sons contestant s contact information, limited to and inclusive of home and addresses, and telephone numbers. ALL ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. USOMC reserves the right to combine / cancel events for any reason. VIDEO RECORDING OR PHOTOGRAPHY: The use of cameras, recording devices, and other electronic equipment during the competitions and during the concerts is strictly prohibited. General photography is allowed only at the announcement portions (at the conclusion) of the competitions, after the performance of each event and during the awards ceremonies. For the Prize Winners Concerts, USOMC shall employ professional Videography services. Concerts videos will be posted at the USOMC web-site free of charge to all the contestants. JUDGING PROCEDURES: Judges may not necessarily hear pieces in their entirety, and this in no way is to reflect negatively upon the performers. All winners will be announced at the end of each event and judges comments will be available to all contestants shortly after the conclusion of each event. THE JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL. Talking with or contacting the judges before, during or after the competitions is unethical, and, thus, inappropriate. The USOMC board may disqualify any contestant(s) displaying such conduct. COMPETITION SCHEDULE: Notification of competition schedules, with names of all contestants in each event (dates and times), including details and maps, will be posted on our website by January 12 th, CAREFULLY check and re-check your entries (after January 17 th ) at the USOMC web site ( Be sure all personal information (including names of pieces) is correctly recorded; you are required to notify USOMC of any mistakes immediately by , before January 19 th, Note: It is the contestant s responsibility to arrive at the competition site on time and ready to perform. In 2017, there are a total of 108 different events to choose from. To promote a greater wealth of repertory for the student musicians, USOMC will not repeat any piece that have been used as designated music within There are a total of 73 events with designated music including: OPEN SOLO 24 Events (4 Categories x 6 levels), TREASURY Categories 29 Events (including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, U.S.A., Chinese), and OPEN DUET 20 Events. 2 PMB #418, 6114 La Salle Ave., Oakland, CA Web: Tel: FINAL COMPETITION PROCEDURE: In cases where there are more than 15 to 28 contestants in an event, depending upon level & length of pieces, the event will be divided into different groups, e.g. of A, B, C, etc. CASH PRIZES, MEDALS and AWARDS: ALL Medals and Prizes will be presented during the Prize Winners Concerts on Saturday, February 25 th, 2017 and on Sunday, February 26 th, st place winners will perform at the Prize Winners Concerts and will receive Gold Medals and Cash Prizes. 2 nd place winners will receive Silver Medals 3 rd place winners will receive Bronze Medals 4 th place winners will receive 4 th place Medals Outstanding Gold Medalists: At the conclusion of each of the Prize Winners Concerts, exceptional performers will be chosen to receive an Outstanding Gold Medalists Award. PROCESSING FEE Application processing fee... $60 to be paid once every year. Account privileges, including membership discount and the ability to place orders at our site will be discontinued until fees are paid. The $20 fee will apply regardless of the reason of the chargeback. Rule 1 - AGE DETERMINATION: CONTEST RULES The cut-off date for age accountability is December 31 st, All contestants are required to upload proof of age at the time of entry, except returning contestants who have provided such documents before; (ages 7 and under are preparatory ; above 19 are advanced ). 3 PMB #418, 6114 La Salle Ave., Oakland, CA Web: Tel: Rule 2 - ORIGINAL MUSIC Required for certain Categories: (a) Contestants do not have to bring their music for the following categories: Open Piano Solo (24 events), Treasury-Composers (29 events) and Open Duet (20 events). USOMC will provide judges with music for the above 73 events (all of them with preselected music). For ALL SHOWCASE Categories inclusive of Concerto & Instrumental Categories (with a contestant s own-choice of music): Original music or legally purchased-online music must be provided for the judges (no illegal photocopies are permitted). They include: (A) Showcase Piano Solo (6 events), (B) Showcase Duet & Duo (8 events); (C) CONCERTOS (5 events); (D) Instrumental Solo & Ensemble Categories (total of 7 events). Contestants of the above 26 events (all with a contestant s choice of music) are required to provide their own music for the adjudicators. Without proper music, a contestant will be disqualified from competing. Rule 3 MUSIC EDITION: (a) Categories 1 11: the stated music editions will be used as the official music by all judges throughout the competitions, which include all Open Solo (24 events), Treasury Solos: (29 events) of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, U.S.A., Chinese and Open Duets (20 events). If you are using a different edition, carefully check to make sure they are not critically different from the official edition; including dynamic markings, articulations, phrasings and notations. (b) Exceptional performance guidelines will be given to judges concerning the Baroque Categories in order that the judges will be prepared to accept any Baroque articulation different from the notation (in the music), as listed at the top of p.5 and P. 6. (c) All contestants from the above mentioned 10 categories (73 events) must perform music designated for their events. Any contestant playing a wrong piece, he/she will be disqualified to win a prize in that event. Rule 4 - MEMORIZATION: Except where noted, all music must be performed from memory. Repeats are not allowed, unless instructed in the syllabus to do so. For winners who play music longer than the allotted time, they must adjust their pieces (with cuts, if necessary) to make the time limit allowed for the PRIZE WINNERS CONCERTS. Page 3 of 20

4 PMB #418, 6114 La Salle Ave., Oakland, CA Web: Tel: (a) Any Prize Winner who exceeds the time limit listed for the Prize Winners Concerts (which is different from the actual competition) will be disqualified from winning the Outstanding Gold Medalists Award at the Prize Winners Concerts. (b) RULES for the time limit in the Concerto, Showcase Solo and Instrumental events: NOTE: The USOMC committee has agreed to allow the contestants to play music beyond the indicated time limits. Time each piece carefully and mark them clearly on the entry form. USOMC will do its best to allow extra time for each of these events (as calculated from contestants time assessments). It is to each contestant s advantage to correctly assess the playing time of his pieces, so as to prevent judges from having to rush or run overtime. IMPORTANT: All contestants must prepare to play their music entirely (no personal cuts are allowed during the competitions). The judges may stop a performance before it ends or begin a piece from a certain section, neither of which will reflect negatively upon the contestants. Rule 6 FOR ALL PRIZE WINNERS (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th place winners): All prize winners (including 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th place winners) must attend the concerts to receive their awards. All Winners whether performing or not, must attend their designated Prize Winners Concerts on Saturday, Feb. 25 th and/or Sunday, Feb. 26 th in order to receive their certificates, medals and cash awards. Winners are expected to attend the Prize Winners Concerts in formal attire. No one is permitted to receive a medal for an absentee. If a winner cannot attend the concert(s), he/she may request that his/her medal(s) be mailed to them (for which a $25 shipping and handling fee will apply). 5 Level 1 TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL CATEGORY 1: OPEN SOLO NO AGE LIMIT (Total 24 Events: 6 Levels of 4 different Categories) There are four categories each, of six levels a total of 24 Events, with contestants performing the same music. All pieces are pre-selected. Contestants may enter any and all of the levels as they choose. Please review the Contest Rules before making your selection. NO REPEATS, unless instructed clearly. For Levels 1A to 8A (Baroque): Guidelines will be given to judges concerning commonly known baroque performance practices which include ornaments, phrasings, dynamics, and articulations, not marked as such, but used by Bach, Scarlatti, Handel, and other Baroque composers and musicians as appropriate styles for the period. This is an exception to Rule #3 (p.3).
