Grading Daily Contribution (5 points a day): 30% of grade 1 point for being on time and not walking in after the bell 1 point for having your music and music folder 1 point for having your instrument or stick bag 1 point for actively warming up before class begins 1 point for having a pencil on your music stand Points are deducted if any of the above requirements are not met. In addition, if a student is being disrespectful, talking out of turn, disrupting class, or not following classroom expectations and procedures they will be docked points at Mr. Hartley s discretion. Students receive 0 points if they are: a) using their cell phone during class (unless for a tuner/metronome, students must clear this with Mr. Hartley before class begins) b) forgot their instrument and therefore cannot participate c) absent Students can buy back missed Daily Contribution points via 30 minutes of isolated practice on current ensemble music or technical studies in Mr. Hartley s room after school. One session of 30 minutes only buy s back one day s points. Playing Tests: 20% of grade Regular playing tests will be administered via the CHARMS online portal. Students must log into their Charms account and record themselves playing the test. This can be done from any computer with a microphone, laptop, ipad, cell phone, etc. If a student does not have access to this technology they may borrow a friend s cell phone or use the computer in the band room. Late playing tests are not accepted. Performances: 40% of grade Music is a performance art and students are therefore expected to be at all performances. If a student misses a performance for any reason, they receive a zero for that performance. A student can make up to one missed performance per trimester by writing a four-page report on a subject of Mr. Hartley s choosing. Students have one week after a performance to turn in their paper. Theory / History / Listening Assignments: 10% of grade Students will complete theory, history, and listening assignments in class or via the CHARMS portal. If a student misses an in-class assignment they will have 1 week to make it up after school. The majority of these assignments will be kept in a packet which will be in their music folder. Handbook 6

Class Fees In addition to purchasing your Concert Attire, all students must fulfill the following pay-to-play fees. These fees help us grow and maintain our instrumental music program. This year, the class fees will be used to purchase reusable, professional-line music folders for every student to use for this year and years to come. Concert Band Annual Concert Band Class Fee Wind Ensemble Annual Wind Ensemble Class Fee Solo Fee University of Washington Day Trip Jazz Ensemble Annual Jazz Ensemble Class Fee Clark College Jazz Festival Day Trip Percussion Ensemble Annual Percussion Class Fee String Orchestra Annual String Orchestra Class Fee Kelso Marching Band Payment 1 Payment 2 Payment 3 Payment 4 $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 7th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 7 th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by December 2nd $50.00 payable to KHS ASB by January 13th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 7th $40.00 payable to KHS ASB by December 16th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 7th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 7th Extra-Curricular Fees $ total $ payable to the KIMB by August 15 th $ payable to the KIMB by September 1 st $30.00 payable to KHS ASB by September 16 th $45.00 payable to KHS ASB by October 13th Kelso Basketball Band New Member Music & Polo Fee Returning Member Music Fee Solo & Ensemble Solo Fee Small Ensemble Fee (2-4 students) Large Ensemble Fee (5-16 students) Piano Accompanist Fee $30.00 payable to KHS ASB by November 18 th $10.00 payable to KHS ASB by November 18th $15.00 payable to KHS ASB by December 2nd $18.00 payable to KHS ASB by December 2nd $25.00 payable to KHS ASB by December 2nd $25.00 payable to the KIMB by December 2nd Fundraising I realize that all of these fees are overwhelming. Money should never be a reason for a student not to experience music. Our program is supported by a fantastic, 501(c)3 certified booster group, the Kelso Instrumental Music Boosters. They continually host fundraisers for our band and orchestra students to earn all of the money they need to participate in any ensemble, but you must be proactive and attend their meetings to learn about these opportunities. Parents, guardians, and students are invited to attend their meetings on the second Tuesday of every month in Mr. Hartley s room at 6:30 pm to get involved. Check the CHARMS online calendar to confirm the next meeting date. Handbook 7

Required Materials Instrument Kelso High School does not supply flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones, violins, or violas. These may be purchased or rented from Beacock Music in Vancouver, WA. In addition, we have a limited supply of instruments such as French horns, cellos, bari saxophones, and tubas. Some students may have to share their instrument with another student if we do not have enough to go around. In these cases, students will have their own mouthpiece/neckstrap and share the main body of the instrument. Pencil every day.on the stand it s part of your daily contribution. Mallets, Sticks, and Stick Bags for Percussionists All percussionists must supply their own mallets and bring them every day to class. These are your instrument!!! Percussionists should purchase the Vic Firth EP2 percussion pack or the equivalent type and number of sticks/mallets in a stick bag. In addition, all jazz drummers must supply Vic Firth SD5 s. Instrument Damage Fines Students who rent large or rare instruments from the school must sign a rental agreement form. If the student damages the instrument, entirely breaks the instrument, or does not return the instrument, they will be required to either pay for the damages or replace the entire instrument. These fines are payable to the KHS ASB office. Students may always track what they have checked out on CHARMS to see the full price of replacement. These prices do not include shipping. Handbook 8

Lockers If a student asks for one, Mr. Hartley will provide them with a locker. The instrumental music program will also provide a lock for your student to use. As our program grows, we occasionally run out of locks, in this instance and this instance only, a student may put their own lock on their locker with Mr. Hartley s permission. This personal lock must be a combo lock and not a key lock. Furthermore, Mr. Hartley must have the combination. Mr. Hartley or school officials have the right to open a student s locker at any time. If a foreign lock is placed on the locker, Mr. Hartley or school officials have the right to cut off the lock. Drugs, Alcohol, and Other Mr. Hartley has a very strict no tolerance policy. Being in music is a privilege and if students abuse that privilege they will be removed from the program indefinitely. If Mr. Hartley discovers the student has drugs, alcohol, or other illegal items on them/in their locker/in the classroom they will be removed from the program and turned over to school officials for discipline. Furthermore, if a student partakes in any of these activities while on a music trip they will be removed from the program, turned into school officials for discipline, and may be sent home early at the student s expense. Bullying The instrumental music program is a family of students. We find that we perform best when we all like each other. Bullying is not tolerated in the classroom, G-Hall or within the ensembles. If a student is being bullied he or she should inform Mr. Hartley immediately and the situation will be dealt with. Handbook 9

Wind Ensemble Commitment & Agreement Congratulations on making it into the top performing band at Kelso High School. Your hard work over the past three to seven years is about to pay off. As a member of the Wind Ensemble you will be held to a different standard than all of the other students in the band program. I expect you to prepare your parts and practice daily. Your behavior should be different than students in other ensembles, and you should strive to be the best in your school. This year we are raising the bar for our Wind Ensemble to match our sister ensemble, the Chamber Orchestra. As such, all students in the Wind Ensemble will be required to prepare a solo for the regional Solo & Ensemble festival. Students will also be highly encouraged to participate in the Kelso High School Large Percussion Ensemble, Large Brass Ensemble, or Large Woodwind Ensemble at the regional Solo & Ensemble festival. In addition to your continued technical development as an individual musician on your instrument, your active participation in Wind Ensemble is required for the ensemble to develop musical artistry. Just as in all other ensembles, students in the Wind Ensemble will receive Daily Contribution points and just as in the other ensembles these points may be bought back as stated in the handbook. However, when a student in the Wind Ensemble has reached a combination of 8 absences or tardies, the student and Mr. Hartley will meet to form an action plan to ensure the student can get to class on time or more frequently. This action plan will be shared with the class by the student, so that their peers may hold them accountable. A tardy is defined as not being in their seat, actively warming up at 6:45 am. If necessary, upon reaching 12 absences or tardies, enrollment changes will occur if deemed necessary by the director. In the case of extreme situations, such as a length of serious sickness/hospitalization, exceptions will be made at the ensemble s discretion. Signing below means you accept your position in the Kelso High School Wind Ensemble and agree to the above terms. Student Signature: Date: Parent/Guardian Signature: Date: Handbook 11
