2 FLEX PERIOD Flex period is when students have elective classes Music IR (Individualized Reading) Intervention/Educational Programs Every child s needs are different, so many different music options are available. MOST take 1 music class SOME take 2 music classes VERY FEW take 0 music classes

3 MUSIC CLASS STRUCTURE Choir Part 1 (2 classes/wk.) Part 2 (2 classes/wk.) Alternating Sectional Day (1 class/approx. every other wk.) Instrumental Like instrument instruction (1 class/wk. smaller class size) Mixed instrument instruction (1 class/wk. larger class size) Percussion students will receive an extra class per week (before school) due to the number of instruments and wide variety of skills they need to learn

May Music a la Mode Saturday, May 12 ALL music groups (grades 5-12) perform on this date. Fundraiser for the Music Boosters with 100% of the proceeds funding music PK- 12 in Westlake City Schools. 4th Grade Recruitment (all 5 th Grade Music Groups) (during school)

5 CONCERT DRESS For our concert performances, we ask that the performers dress nicely. No Jeans No Tennis Shoes or High Heeled Shoes Follow the school dress code Girls in instrumental performance groups (seated to perform) need to be extra aware of skirt length. The stage lights can make the stage very warm, please keep in mind

7 PAY TO PARTICIPATE Music Students at DIS will be charged a one time $15 pay to participate fee for the school year for each music class they are enrolled in Payable online through EZPay Details will come once school starts

9 OBTAINING AN INSTRUMENT An instrument must be in top playing condition for a beginning student to have a successful experience Rent or Purchase through a reputable music store Family/Friend owned have the instrument evaluated by a music teacher or music store. Have repairs made during the summer, not at the beginning of the school year Online purchases it is highly suggested you consult your child s music teacher first to be sure you are getting a good brand Avoid off-brands these tend to cause frequent playing problems for the student and repair problems for the music stores (Mendini, Glory, First Act) If the price seems too go to be true, IT IS! Avoid wholesale club and discount store purchases BARITONES (for band) are available from the school. You may rent your own if you prefer, but they have a higher rental cost than other instruments.

10 PRIVATE INSTRUCTION Private instruction is not REQUIRED, but is highly RECOMMENDED We suggest that private instruction not start until the students have started their music classes at DIS Contact your child s music teacher for suggestions of private teachers

11 WESTLAKE MUSIC BOOSTERS Provide support to all music programs in Westlake City Schools (grades PK-12) Meetings are generally held the 2 nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the WHS Library (Tuesdays during marching band season) More information can be found at: Always looking for new members and volunteers!

13 CHOIR Choir is a SINGING based class Most students see Mrs. Patton twice a week 5 th Grade Choir sings in two-part harmony Students will have access to sheet music to practice at home Choir is a participation based class Concert attendance is required (Dec. & May)

20 INSTRUMENT FAMILIES Woodwinds Brass Percussion *Uses multiple keys ( buttons ) on the instrument to produce various notes. FLUTE CLARINET SAXOPHONE *Uses various lip pressures on the mouthpiece to produce various notes. TRUMPET TROMBONE BARITONE *Creates sound by striking instrument surfaces. *Learns a variety of instruments throughout the year. *Bells (melodic) *Practice Pad (rhythmic)

21 MORNING CLASSES In order to keep class sizes manageable, we offer some before school small group like instrument classes. 7:45-8:25 Selection is determined by enrollment and staffing Percussion students will DEFINITELY have a morning class (Tuesdays) Other instruments are usually volunteer based An will be sent to you in the first couple weeks of school if this program is available for your child

22 BAND CLASSROOM SUPPLIES Instrument with name tag Pencil (no pens, colored pencils, or markers!) Folder (provided by teacher) Method Book ( Red Book ) Folding Music Stand (for homework assignments do not bring to school)

23 STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BOOK 1 (RED) Used by every Band student Available in local music stores or online. Will use for 5 th AND 6 th grade band You DO NOT need the enhanced edition with the CDs that is totally optional (costs extra.) Local music stores will have our supply list on hand.

24 FLUTE REQUIRED SUPPLIES Thumbport a snap-on thumb rest. Will help students to balance the instrument and hold it in the correct position to produce the best tone Cleaning Rod used to clean the instrument after each use. Most instruments come with this supply. If buying used, you may have to purchase one. (Metal, Wood, or Plastic) Cleaning Cloth untreated silk or cotton. This is NOT the same as a polishing cloth! The chemicals will ruin the pads. You can purchase one at the music store, OR make your own: Bandana (wash multiple times to de-starch) Old T-Shirt (cut small enough to fit)

25 CLARINET/SAXOPHONE REQUIRED SUPPLIES Reeds* produces the sound. Students are required to have four GOOD reeds (no chips, breaks, cracks) at all times. BRAND DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE! (buy at to save money!) Reed Guard Protects the reeds and prolongs their length of use. Keeps them from warping. Neck Strap (Sax only) comes with most instruments. Tends to tangle, so please check on its status every now and then. Swab used to clean the instrument out after each use. Needs to be specific to clarinet/saxophone (weighted.) Cork Grease will keep the corks lubricated. One tube will last quite a while. *Expect students to break/chip reeds more frequently at first. Once they get more control of their air, reeds will start to last longer.

26 TRUMPET/TROMBONE/BARITONE REQUIRED SUPPLIES Valve Oil (Trumpet/Baritone) lubricates the valves and keeps them from sticking Slide Oil (Trombone) lubricates the trombone slide and keeps it from sticking Slide Grease lubricates the tuning slides on all brass instruments Cleaning Snake cleans out residue from the inside of the instrument Mouthpiece Brush used to scrub the mouthpiece

27 PERCUSSION REQUIRED SUPPLIES Stick Bag allows easy and safe storage of all sticks and mallets. Allows students to store sticks/mallets in locker during school day. Vic Firth SD1 Drum Sticks a much better quality stick than what comes with most rentals. Allows all of our drumming to sound the same. Markings on the stick also help students learn proper hand placement/technique. Mike Balter BB11 Mallets - a much better quality stick than what comes with most rentals. Allows all of our bell playing to sound the same.
