A new year seems like a good time to reach out to a colleague or friend who is doing this work, and invite them to join us at JumpStart, which is our Chapter s annual refresher event on January 13. We are fortunate that Bryn Mawr Presbyterian has the space and resources to allow us to move in for the day each January. Your Chapter leaders work hard each year to bring interesting musicians, singers, organists and instrumentalists to join us for the day, and inspire us with new directions and new possibilities for our singers and players. This year is no different. Along with our Chapter efforts to reach the next generation of organists with our scholarship and outreach programs, we are excited to offer JumpStart to you each season. YOU can help us achieve our goal of serving the musical community by inviting a colleague to join us. Or send me a name of a friend, and I will personally reach out to them and invite them to spend the day with us in January, and possibly go forward with us into the New Year of activities and events designed for those dedicated to the work we do in schools and religious institutions. Pipe Organ Encounter is on the horizon for our Chapter in July, We hope to host up to 30 young players in center city Philadelphia for a week of excitement, challenge and great music. We need your volunteer help to make this a reality. There are not many cities better prepared to welcome young organists we have unbelievable resources available to us! Consider getting involved at the planning level as we prepare to open our city to a new generation of organists. Contact me, and together we will work to have a wonderful season for Philadelphia AGO! Together, let s make this a year of outreach and growth for Philadelphia AGO. Blessings to you all for a fabulous 2018! See you at Bryn Mawr Pres on January 13! -Marcia Sommers, Dean Philadelphia Chapter AGO

3 3 REGISTRAR S CORNER John Kampmeyer, Registrar The Times They Are a-changin' While I'm not old enough to have been born when this Bob Dylan hit was penned, I have certainly heard it many times in my life. Perhaps it's because no matter where we are in our life, things are changing. This is true as well for our chapter. Over the past years, we have seen a steady decline in our membership. In addition to reducing our ranks, this also results in a reduction in our available finances to operate our chapter (including offering monthly events, usually free of charge)! The Executive Committee is constantly seeking ways to be better stewards of the limited resources we are given. One way to do this is to cut costs. At the same time, we do not want to cut any benefits to or programming for our members. An idea started last January that, in this digital age, we should ask those members who would like a paper copy of The Crescendo in addition to their electronic copy to pay $25 to help offset the printing and mailing costs. By doing this, we have reduced the number of printed copies from 175 each month to under 50. This has yielded a great savings! Unfortunately, with a rolling membership renewal through OnCard, it has also made an administrative nightmare. Thus, effective January 1, 2018 our chapter will no longer provide printed copies of The Crescendo to renewing members. Those members who did pay the $25 for a printed copy during their 2017 renewal will continue to receive it until their 2018 renewal date. Also, those few members who do not have a computer or access to one will continue to receive a printed copy in the mail each month. The times are a-changin' and, often, change can be difficult. However, I hope this small change, that will have a significant impact on the cost and ease of delivering our monthly newsletter, will not be one. He has been a chapter member for almost 10 years. Many of you may have had the chance to enjoy his playing. The story of how this young organist fell in love with the organ is remarkable. I have been the music director at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church since September of I am currently a high school senior, and I study organ with Alan Morrison. I studied with Dennis Elwell from 2008 until his retirement in the summer of Also, I have studied piano most of my life, and I currently study at Settlement Music School with Dolly Krasnopolsky. As my father is a church organist and formerly was in the employ of an organ builder, I have had comparably easy access to the pipe organ for as long as I can remember. Sometime before the age of five, I was invited to sit at the organ bench and watch my father play. It was at this moment that I really fell in love with the instrument. In 2008, I began formal lessons, and, at my teacher s suggestion, I joined the AGO. I intend to pursue a degree in organ performance and, ultimately, to establish a career as a traveling recitalist, church music director and organ instructor. I am currently in the college application process.

Responsibilities include leading the Chancel Choir and/or individuals/ensembles with rehearsals following Sunday worship, supporting and/or accompanying the self-directed Handbell Choir, and expanding youth music involvement as part of the Sunday School program. The organ is a newly-installed digital Infinity 361 Series Rodgers. St. Paul s is located in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, and the church s music program should support such diversity. Candidates should have experience with church liturgy, demonstrate an ability to perform/lead a church music program of varied genres (i.e., classical, traditional, contemporary), have experience building participation in worship and music programs and possess strong organizational skills, leadership competencies and a congenial personality. Letters of interest or resumes may be submitted to admin@stpaulsolney.org or by US mail to the above address. The church office may be contacted at Music Minister First Presbyterian Church at Norristown 113 E. Airy Street, Norristown, PA Posted 6/8/17 First Presbyterian Church at Norristown seeks a parttime music minister to facilitate the glorification of our Heavenly Father through the art of music. This individual will lead and develop the music ministry for the church in consultation with the pastor and Session in a way that is consistent with its theology, values and mission. Responsibilities include overseeing and leading all musical aspects of the Sunday worship service and special services including selecting congregational hymns, coordinating music for prelude, offertory and postlude, providing musical accompaniment during hymns and praise songs, leading the choir anthem(s) and coordinating guest musicians. Responsibilities also include leading and developing the adult choir, assisting in coordination of a biweekly Thursday night praise service and discovering, developing and empowering congregant musicianship. Ability and willingness to lead a hand bell choir and/or children s choir is a plus. Instruments include a three-manual Rodgers organ, a 1938 Steinway grand piano and a 1936 Mathushek grand piano. Candidates should play professional-level piano and be comfortable with contemporary, traditional and ethnic musical styles. Ability to play organ is preferred; additional instruments are a plus. A commitment of around 6-10 hours per week are required with variations during holidays or special circumstances. Applicants may contact the church office at firstpres.norristown@gmail.com, , or Jim Serratore at jjserratore@aol.com,

14 14 WHERE AM I? Where is THIS local landmark? This really does have an organ connection, and several of you will recognize it immediately. Thanks again to Jeff Fowler for suggesting this puzzle. Our December puzzle was submitted by Jeff Fowler and showed the installation of the 4,102 pipe organ in August of 1960 at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, donated at the time by Mrs. Efrem Zimbalist. Recent photos of the organ were very kindly provided by its new home, Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church. Notes: The organ was donated by Mrs. Efrem (Mary Curtis) Zimbalist, daughter of publishing scion Cyrus H. K. Curtis. It was built in five moveable sections to be used on a slightly sloping stage. The organ was sold to the Lenape Valley Presbyterian Church, New Britain, PA, and installed in 1991 by Brantley Duddy. Builder: Aeolian-Skinner Organ Co., Inc.
