1 JAVELINA MARCHING BAND Leadership Application Spring 2014 Eligibility: To be eligible for leadership positions, an applicant must: 1. Have participated as an active member in the Javelina Marching Band for at least one year and also have been a member of the 2013 season. 2. Be enrolled full-time at the university for the Fall 2013 semester. 3. Be able to participate in summer activities (unless excused by Dr. Kihle). Dates of Tryout: Wednesday April 23, 4:00-10:00 p.m. Thursday April 24, 4:00-10:00 p.m. (if needed) All candidates must participate in both days. Activities include: 1. Marching proficiency. Candidates will be taught a marching concept by the drill tech candidates. Drum major and section leader candidates will be rated on mental focus and marching ability. Drill tech candidates will be judged on teaching ability. 2. Performance audition. Drum major candidates will conduct part 1 from next year s show to a live ensemble. Section leader and drill tech candidates will perform for these auditions. In addition, section leader candidates will audition separately on the show music. 3. Interview. This will consist of questions about your background and knowledge. Available Positions: Drum Major Up to three drum majors may be chosen. The number selected will be based on individual ability and preparedness for the role. Drill Tech There will be up to five drill tech positions available: one caption visual (to assist Dr. Kihle in the box during rehearsal) and four field techs. Based on the qualifications of those chosen, the box responsibilities could be rotated so others have the opportunity to teach. Anyone interested in auditioning for percussion techs for the drum line and front ensemble should speak with Matthew Hernandez.

2 Music Tech There will be two music techs chosen based on the section leader auditions, one woodwind player and one brass player. The position will be left vacant if there are no qualified or willing applicants. You must audition for section leader to be considered for the Music Tech position. Section Leader One person will be be chosen for each section based on qualifications and ability to work cooperatively. Section leaders will be chosen for the following sections: Piccolo, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba Percussionists should consult with Matthew Hernandez or Dr. Kihle regarding the audition process. Color Guard captains will be selected in the fall. (Note: Music Librarian and Equipment Manager positions will be handled separately.) Required Skills: Professionalism and leadership, including the ability to lead others on and off the field. Receptiveness to criticism and instruction from professors and other leadership staff. Strong playing/conducting ability. For drum majors this includes: solid tempo concepts, clear ictus, pattern sizes appropriate to the music. Vocal and visual commands, including: Attention, Parade Rest, Mark Time, Halt, Horns Up and Down. Inflection and projection are important in effective voice commands. Ability to help with marching instruction when called upon to do so. Willingness and ability to offer critique to other students. Understanding of the chain of command/organizational structure of the band. Passion for the art of music and enthusiasm for the Javelina Marching Band. Ability to be a role model to all of the students in the band, music and non-music majors.

3 Drum Major Duties: 1. Be an exemplary example for all players in the band. This includes attendance at all rehearsals and performance, your performance on the field as well as in other academic courses. 2. Memorize all scores prior to the first day of band camp. 3. Move conducting equipment to and from storage before and after rehearsals. 4. Inform students of when they are to be on the field at the beginning of and during rehearsals. 5. Help with playing tests and sectionals, per section leaders requests. 6. Organize pep rallies and Hog Calls. 7. Conduct the band in the stands and coordinate with athletics staff. 8. Organize and warm-up the band at parades and performances. 9. Help maintain discipline on the field through disciplined behavior on the podium. 10. Assist with marching basics as needed. Drill Tech Duties: 1. Be an exemplary example for all players in the band. This includes attendance at all rehearsals and performances, your performance on the field as well as your studiousness. 2. Have a complete understanding of the drill and how it relates to the music. 3. Attend all scheduled leadership meetings. 4. Offer creative input into the visual design of the show. 5. Assist with set-up and tear down before and after rehearsals. 6. Be responsible for hauling equipment for all football and exhibition performances. 7. Help with playing tests and sectionals, per section leaders requests. 8. Help maintain discipline on the field.

4 9. Aid in distribution of materials (drill charts, music, schedules, etc.) 10. Monitor rehearsal atmosphere and report any major problems to others in the leadership staff. 11. Lead marching basics and drill rehearsals with clarity and conciseness. Music Tech Duties 1. Be an exemplary example for all players in the band. This includes attendance at all rehearsals and performances, your performance on the field as well as your studiousness. 2. Have a complete understanding of the music for the section for which they are assigned (woodwind or brass). 3. Run large-group sectionals during the afternoon blocks during band camp. 4. Attend all scheduled leadership meetings. 5. Offer creative input into the musical aspects of the show. 6. Be responsible for hauling equipment for all football and exhibition performances (if not marching a spot on the field). 7. Aid in distribution of materials (music, etc.) Section Leader Duties: 1. Be an exemplary example for all players in your section and all members in the band. This includes your performance in the band as well as in other academic courses. 2. Organize and lead the section in sectional rehearsals. 3. Hold at least one sectional per week. 4. Report attendance to the tech in charge of that duty. 5. Help with equipment set-up before and after rehearsal. 6. Administer playing tests, uniform checks, and instrument checks.

5 7. Maintain discipline within your section in marching and music rehearsals as appropriate. 8. Report any concerns about a section member to the leadership staff; serious issues should be brought directly to one of the directors. Complete the attached application and return to Dr. Kihle no later than Monday, April 21. You may also include a resume of your experience if you wish. Anyone submitting a late application will not be considered for a position.
