4 Curricula The objective of dance teacher education is to educate future dance teachers who are independent, versatile and professionally skilled, and who are able to enthusiastically take care of their duties in their chosen field. The main emphasis in the education is to develop the students professional identities also as dancers, but mainly as dance pedagogues. The degree includes 60 credits /ECTS credits of pedagogical studies and associated practical training. Students do their Bachelor s theses in the form of, either a written thesis, a pedagogical research work or an artistic work. Both pedagogical research works and artistic works always include a written report, as well. It is possible to take part of the studies in an international student exchange programme. Graduates find employment for example in the fi elds of all-round art education, guidance of recreational dance activity, basic art instruction, dance sport training and professional art education. Oulu Polytechnic plays a significant role on a national scale as a developer and influencer of dance culture, since it is the only institute of higher education in which folk dance, competitive ballroom dance, social dance and art dance come into contact on a daily basis. Due to the daily interaction of the different options dance teachers graduating from Oulu Polytechnic possess wide-ranging expertise. The importance and appreciation of all the dance idioms is a fundamental factor in the dance teacher education at Oulu Polytechnic. Option of Classical Ballet The objective of the studies is to develop and strengthen the students own dance technique and artistic impression and to qualify the students for teaching the extended basic level of classical ballet and children s dance. The education focuses on learning the techniques and styles of classical ballet. The emphasis is for example on transfer of tradition and application of sports sciences to teaching. Option of Folk Dance The education focuses on Finnish folk dances and the folk dances of neighbouring countries, teaching students to dance them and qualifying students for teaching them. The emphasis is on studying different folk dance idioms, styles and techniques. The folk dance technique instruction encompasses steps and step combinations, holds, standard elements and figures typical of Finnish folk dance. Other aspects included in the instruction are rhythmics, character, use and control of space and figuration, pair and group dances from different traditional regions and periods, as well as development of individual dance technique skills. Emphasis is also put on pedagogy: methods of teaching folk dance and dance in general. Option of Competitive Ballroom Dance The objective of the studies is to develop and strengthen the students own dance technique and to qualify them for work as teachers. In ballroom and Latin dance instruction students learn the so-called basic figures and their most common variations and familiarise themselves with the creation of free choreographies. During the education students take an examination, which is equivalent to the international membership level degree in both ballroom and Latin dances. In social dance studies the emphasis is on street and show dance. In addition students take basic studies in Finnish social dances. Option of Social Dance The objective is to acquire a strong and diversifi ed foundation for dancing and teaching social dances used in Finland. In main subject studies students study Finnish and international ballroom dances that are part of social dance culture. There is a possibility to widen the 4 expertise by taking free choice studies in which the emphasis is on either rock n swing dance or street dance. Student selection Applicants are required to have completed the course of study laid down for the upper secondary school, the matriculation examination or a secondary vocational qualification. All eligible applicants will be invited to participate in the entrance examinations. Applicants applying for entrance into the option of competitive ballroom dance must also have competitive experience of at least STUL C-level competitions. The entrance examinations assess the applicants dance technique skills, musicality, physical attributes and interaction skills. Communication is one of the most important growth areas in the society of the future. Thus, it is hardly surprising that the education has aroused great interest from the very beginning. In the joint national application of 2003 there were 880 people who applied for admittance, when the intake was only 48. In 2004 the intake of students was also 48. The number of students in the degree programme in the academic year was approximately 250. The studies leading to the degree of Media Artist emphasise creativity, interaction, cooperation, learning by doing and entrepreneurship. The objective is to educate professionals whose communication skills are supplemented with an understanding of man, society and how the developing information technology can be utilized in communication. The education is implemented and developed in close co-operation with the working life. Options The Degree Programme in Communication educates professionals for content production in cross media and new media. The 60 ECTS credits of basic studies build a solid foundation in information technology and communication, after which the 120 ECTS credits of professional studies emphasise three areas of expertise: journalism,

5 visual communication and media production. The option includes 30 ECTS credits of practical training. It is possible to take part of the studies as an exchange student in our international partner institutions. The Option of Journalism qualifies graduates for work as journalists or content producers in traditional media, online media such as the Internet and digital television, and different media combinations. The degree combines the possibilities of new digital and interactive technology with the tradition of communication and media. Among the topics included in the option are for example online publishing and online writing, news work, magazine, radio and television work, version management, media criticism and advanced special studies in the media of the student s choice. The Option of Visual Communication combines the latest technology and artistic aspects of visual communication. The objective is to educate visual communication professionals, who work in different capacities in graphic design and design of media products and are aware of the integration of digital and print communication. A visual communicator must also be able to produce original photographs independently. Among the topics included in the option are for example graphic design, typography, digital image processing, visual journalism, animation and three-dimensional modelling, user interface design and video expression. Option of Media Production. A media producer possesses diversified professional skills. He is familiar with all aspects of media production and is capable of working as a responsible leader of media productions. Graduates master the full scope of content production: creation of ideas, development of manuscripts, different production processes and associated technical standards, copyright management, production costs and financing/earnings logic, different distribution channels/publication platforms, choice of target audience and markets, and archival of finished products. After basic studies students function as producers, production or project leaders or in other suitable capacities in media productions (television programmes, magazines, online media etc.), which are produced in cooperation with other options in the degree programme or by extrainstitutional parties. Media producers find employment for example in independent production companies and public service media or as project leaders for made-to-order productions.
