2 CHORAL REHEARSAL RULES (in addition to all rules in the JHS Handbook.) 1. Be in the room when the bell rings. Upon entering the room, proceed immediately to your seat or at your place on the risers, with your folder. Being timely is necessary to being productive 2. Once rehearsal begins, there is to be NO talking unless instructed to do so by the director. Focus can only be achieved if we stay in the moment 3. Books, etc. brought to rehearsal MUST be placed on the bookshelves provided. If there is not enough room on the bookshelves, belongings may be placed on the floor. Please do not block any doors. Safety is always a priority 4. NO restroom passes. Please take care of this on your way to class. As a group we strive to grow our level of focus and ability to help others stay focused 5. A positive, hard-working attitude is expected. This includes correct posture and attentiveness. Attitude and Perspective is a choice. The pursuit of music must be done with an open heart. 6. On days of illness, PLEASE inform the director AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD of your non-participation. You will still be expected to follow along with the class. This will NOT be a time to complete other homework, read, etc., during the rehearsal. Every member is of extreme importance to the collective sound and power of the group. The energy and focus of each individual member is just as critical. 7. You are expected to take the best possible care of your folder and its contents, as well as other equipment in the choral room. Your actions speak of your care and dedication to your work just as much as the music you create. 8. NO gum, candy, food, drinks, etc. during rehearsal or in the choral room. We are to be learning proper vocal technique, which includes having the pathway for your voice clear! 9. Show the JACKSON CHORAL PRIDE in the choral room by helping to keep it clean and presentable. Pianos in the room may be played only with permission. Respect each other, the equipment, and the room 11. Cell phones and any other electronic devices are not permitted to be on or out during any choral rehearsal or performance. Leave the world outside the room and simply be in the moment with the beauty of creating music. 12. Always do your best! Ubuntu

3 CONCERT DRESS Robes will be worn for the Winter Concert, District Large Group, State Large Group, and the Spring Concert. Robes will NOT be worn at the Fall Show or Solo & Ensemble. The following stipulations apply when wearing a robe for performances: LADIES What to wear - Either a nice dress; skirt/blouse combination; or black dress pants/blouse - Keep your skirt/dress length in mind. - Robes are hemmed 10 from the floor. - Dresses/skirts should not go below the hem of the robe but should be professional in length. - Black Shoes that do not show the toes at all - If hose are worn, they must be of a neutral/flesh tone - Hair should be neatly groomed - Care should be given to choice of jewelry and hair accessories What not to wear - Open-toed shoes, sandals, flip-flops etc. are NOT acceptable - Large hoop or dangling earrings are NOT acceptable - Large collars or turtle-necks are NOT to be worn with the robe - Large amounts of hair spray are NOT acceptable - Perfume is NOT acceptable (deoderant is expected :) - Leggings, yoga pants, colored hose, or decorated hose are NOT acceptable GENTLEMEN What to wear - Either dress slacks, sportcoat, shirt, and tie or a suit and tie - Dark colors preferred for the slacks/sportcoat or suit - Use good taste in selecting a tie so that it compliments your attire and the robe - Black or dark brown shoes - Black socks What not to wear - White socks - Cologne is NOT acceptable (deoderant is expected :) Correct attire is an expectation for every performance. Attire will be a part of the rubric used to grade each concert. Points will be taken off for not following the dress code. Consistent inappropriate dress for concerts/performances may result in disciplinary action. A CHOIR FEE of $50.00 for the year should be turned in by September 14th. Make checks payable to: Jackson Choral Boosters. Put the student's name, choir number, and label the envelope Choir Fee. This fee will cover the dry cleaning/alterations necessary for the robes, a JHS Choir t-shirt, and other additional choral needs. JHS CHORAL WEB SITE

4 FRESHMAN CHORUS & CONCERT CHOIR GRADING POLICY The following system of grading will be used for all choral groups: A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 59% and below The grade you receive for a nine-week period will be based upon the following: (approximate percentage listed in parenthesis) Product (85%) Process (15%) Concerts (weighted to 35%) Class participation Performance assessments Posture & Quizzes/Tests (35%) Practice assignments Written assignments Men's/Women's Chorus (15%) or Concert Observation requirement (15%) Freshman Chorus and Concert Choir members may choose to do a Concert Observation each nine weeks in lieu of participating in Men's or Women's Chorus. That Concert Observation will be 15% of each nine-week grade. Freshman Chorus and Concert Choir members that choose to participate in Men s or Women s Chorus will not be required to do a Concert Observation each nine weeks. CONCERT INFORMATION All music that is studied and performed in choir is chosen based on its musical principles to represent different areas of the world, cultures, poets, styles, etc. The foremost quality that all music must have is beauty. The aesthetic quality of each piece must be high. The motto of the JHS Choral Department is that life is too short to sing music that isn't of the highest quality. It is never the intent of this program to encourage any particular belief system(s), but to value and respect the music of history, contemporary music, world music and different styles of music while respecting the intent of the text. All performances are MANDATORY. Personal illness, death in the family, wedding in the family, or any other director approved excuse are the only excused absences. A student's work schedule is NOT an excuse for an absence from a performance or mandatory rehearsal. In the case of a pre-existing conflict you MUST inform Mr. Eversdyke immediately at the beginning of the year. A makeup assignment is given for excused/approved absences only. Usually, the problem can be resolved.

5 Performance totals are accumulative throughout the year. At any time during the year, missing the second performance with an unexcused absence will result in the loss of credit, as well as an F for the year. Please note: Performance at the District Large Group Adjudicated Event is mandatory. If you do not perform at the District Adjudicated Event, you will not be permitted to sing at the State Adjudicated Event. Rehearsals for the District and State Adjudicated Event are also mandatory. Missing a mandatory rehearsal with an excused absence prior to one of the adjudicated events will mean that you must perform your part(s) for the director to regain your position. Also, missing both mandatory rehearsals or missing one mandatory rehearsal with an unexcused absence prior to any adjudicated event means that you will not be permitted to sing at that adjudicated event. All situations are different and will be dealt with fairly and individually. MEN S/WOMEN S CHORUS The way to achieve the grade in this category is by attending Men s/women s Chorus rehearsals, performing with that group in concerts, and following all guidelines for the concert, such as, but not limited to, dress code, concert etiquette, and effort. To be eligible to sing in a concert, you must be present at all rehearsals and makeup any excused absence from a rehearsal. Rehearsal times are: WOMEN S CHORUS Tuesdays 2:50pm 3:30pm (sectionals) or 3:50pm MEN S CHORUS Thursdays 2:50pm 3:30pm (sectionals) or 3:50pm Every rehearsal and performance is worth points toward this grade. Therefore, any absence will need to be made up. Make-up opportunities must be scheduled with Mr. Eversdyke. Please note for future reference that Chorale members are required to participate in Men s/women s Chorus and complete a concert observation. Chorale members choosing not to participate will be placed in Concert Choir for the remainder of the year. This will result in the need for a schedule change. CONCERT OBSERVATIONS Concert Choir and Freshman Chorus students that are not participating in Men's or Women's Chorus are expected to attend a choral concert, concert band performance, orchestra concert, classical vocal recital, or musical theatre performance each nine weeks. Ballets, plays, and concerts, such as rock, pop, country, or contemporary Christian, will not be eligible to use for a concert observation. A concert that the student is performing in will not count towards fulfilling this requirement. Students must use and turn in a concert observation form to receive credit. Please follow the directions on the form. It is to be turned in attached to your program or ticket stub. The Concert Observation form can be found on Mr. Eversdyke's web page. If there are concerns as to whether a concert will be eligible for a concert observation, it should be approved by Mr. Eversdyke PRIOR to attendance. Please ask if a concert will count prior to spending money on tickets.

6 AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSALS Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Work, doctor/dentist appointments, driver's training, college visitations or other appointments will not be excused. Missing multiple mandatory rehearsals will result in the inability to perform with your ensemble.
