2 Invitation from the President It is my pleasure to invite you to the 83rd Annual NYSSMA Winter Conference. Last year s conference offered many sessions introducing us to the new New York State Learning Standards. This year s conference will focus more specifically on two of the four Artistic Processes on which the Standards are based - Create and Connect. More than 30 of the sessions will focus on helping us to unpack and look more carefully at the Creating and Connecting Standards. I particularly like the combination of Create and Connect because NYSSMA Winter Conferences create many opportunities for us to connect with each other and learn from our colleagues from around the state. NYSSMA President-Elect David Brown, together with our State Chairpersons, committees and affiliate associations, have put together what promises to be an outstanding lineup of sessions covering every aspect of music education. Once again we will be partnering with TI:ME (Technology In Music Education) for a Pre-Conference followed by a plethora of other technology sessions. Our new NAfME President, Kathleen Sanz, will be giving a keynote address on Friday evening which will be followed by a spectacular performance by Sonic Escape. When I first heard this incredible flute/violin duo I was mesmerized by their musicianship and showmanship. Check out their Game of Thrones video on YouTube and you ll see why I m so excited to be bringing them to our conference. The Concert Hours will feature some great ensembles from across our state and the Composition, Electronic Music and Piano Showcases will feature outstanding young composers and performers. The conference will conclude with performances by our All-State Ensembles in the magnificent Eastman Theatre. I hope you can join us in Rochester for what promises to be an exciting opportunity to hear great music, learn from master clinicians, and celebrate music education in New York State. Michael Salzman NYSSMA President NYSSMA welcomes KATHLEEN B. SANZ, NAfME President NYSSMA is an Approved Provider of CTLE! (Continuing Teacher and Leader Education) Register and attend the NYSSMA Winter Conference Earn 15 credit hours Certificates of Completion will be ed upon request after the conclusion of the conference.
