3 Welcome We hope the rewards of being a part of one of the most exciting and growing organizations at Bear Branch Junior High will be an enjoyable and educational experience for your child! It has been proven that students participating in music tend to earn higher grades in all subjects, and score higher on standardized test than those not involved in music. By accepting membership in the Bear Branch JH school band, you are agreeing to perform to the best of your abilities and work together with the band staff in making the BBJH band one of the best in the state. In order for this to occur, students will need to be responsible, be attentive, be respectful, have a positive attitude, and follow the ideals set by MISD. The directors will do their best to insure that every student will be provided the opportunity to be successful. To the returning families, welcome back, and to the families who are new to BBJH, welcome. We are looking forward to working with you and your children. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time during the school year if you have any questions or concerns. Goals and Objectives of the Magnolia I.S.D. Music Program To provide a quality music program for all MISD students which encompasses musicianship, self-discipline, leadership, respect, problem-solving skills, responsibility, pride, citizenship, and enthusiasm; with life-long learning and self-development that ensures success, through a strong work ethic, and a successful and fun-filled musical experience on every level. 4 Grading Guidelines MISD band programs have instructional objectives that relate to the mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). These objectives are aligned to address the academic skills needed for successful performance in the next grade or next band. Assignments, summative grades, projects, and classroom activities are designed so that the student s performance indicates their level of mastery, which determines their grade and band placement. Students will be expected to meet the responsibilities for their band class as determined by the director. Since band is an academic music class with some extra-curricular activities attached, grades will reflect achievement in both curricular and extracurricular areas. The nine weeks grade will reflect the following: student s daily preparation and participation, individual testing, performances, and extended classroom activities such as sectionals and before/after school rehearsals. The following list is provided to give students and parent s examples of graded activities. Additional assignments may be given at the discretion of the director. Daily Requirements (40% of grade) - Being on task and focused during all rehearsals - Having instrument, music, pencil, and supplies. - Being prepared to play your part successfully. - Marking music and taking notes when asked. - Improving individual music skills - Improving ensemble skills demonstrated daily rehearsals - Demonstrating correct posture, hand position, embouchure, air production, and articulation as monitored during rehearsal - Improvement of music fundamentals demonstrated during the basics part of each rehearsal and sectionals. - Before or after school sectional or rehearsal. **All students are required to have proper music, books and pencils everyday!** Summative Grades (60% of grade) - Individual playing assessments. May either be live in class or recorded - Performances All students are expected to participate in all performances of their band. The student will receive a grade for every performance. - Written assessments - Projects that are to be recorded at home and ed to director Recording Guidelines : Record in a quiet space (no background noises) Metronome must be audible

5 Play as written; if there are multiple measures of rests please count rests OR state in your recording where you will begin. Practice All students are expected to practice a sufficient amount of time to prepare their music for rehearsals and performances. Instruments are required to go home every night with the students. Leaving an instrument overnight in the band hall can greatly hinder the student's progress. Conduct/Expectations Students in band serve as representatives of our school, district, and community at many public extracurricular functions. Membership in band is a privilege and it is within the right of any director to deny membership to a student if they believe that the student would not positively represent the organization. Band members will observe all policies set forth by Magnolia ISD, in additions to the following, standards: - Any behavior, which is not representative of good citizenship, as perceived by the band staff, may result in the student s dismissal from the activity at hand as well as the band program. - Follow director's instructions. - Come into the Band Hall calmly and quietly. - Be seated on time with instrument and all supplies - Take care of individual problems at home, or before or after school not in rehearsal. - Be responsible for your own equipment, if it is not yours do not touch it. - Keep food, drinks and gum out of rehearsals and practice rooms. - Leave other subjects, homework, games, and distractions out of rehearsal. - Raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged. All rehearsals are expected to be quiet so that time will be utilized wisely and as efficiently as possible. - Students will respect the property of others. Care of the Band Facilities - All instruments will be stored in assigned locked locker. Cases and instruments should not be left on the floor. Students who demonstrate great difficulty with this may lose the privilege of having a storage area in the band hall. - Students who are not enrolled in band are not allowed in the Band Hall. - Be considerate of rehearsals taking place in the Band Hall. - Keep the Band Hall neat and orderly; throw trash away even if it is not yours; keep other books and belongings in your school locker.

6 - Get permission to be in the Director s office, or to use the phone. - Music stands are for holding music ONLY. - Percussionists ONLY may touch percussion instruments. - Leave your area neat after rehearsals. - Running, shouting, or horseplay is not allowed. - If you move it, put it back. - Take your instrument home everyday. Workroom/ Band Libraries Absolutely no student is allowed in the workrooms without permission. Members must ask permission before using the copy machine. Practice & Ensemble Rooms Are designated for practicing, not social gatherings. Eligibility All MISD bands adhere to the eligibility rules and regulations as stated by TEA, UIL, and MISD. A student shall be suspended from participation in all extracurricular activities sponsored or sanctioned by the school district during the three week period following a grade reporting period in which the student received a grade lower than a 70 in any class. L oss of eligibility does not take effect until seven days after the end of the reporting period. Ineligible students are not suspended from practice or rehearsal of extra-curricular activities. Students may regain eligibility by passing ALL courses in the third week of the affected grading period. Reinstatement of eligibility would occur seven days after the three-week progress report period (see TEA/UIL Side by Side). Activities that are considered co-curricular components of any course are not affected by the eligibility rule. Examples of these activities are all rehearsals and performances that take place as a regular extension of classroom instruction. Any performance that is competitive in nature or for which admission is charged is deemed extra-curricular. Auditions All students are required to audition for select performance ensembles. The Head Band Director determines audition requirements, and directors will notify students of audition dates, requirements, and results. Directors will serve as an evaluator during auditions. Audition material will reflect the director s anticipated performance level for the students and will be based on prior learning, and auditions may be live or taped at the director's discretion. Students will be re-evaluated periodically for participation in select performance ensemble.

7 Concert/Ensembles The band program is divided into five band classes: Beginner, Cadet, Concert, Symphonic, and Honor. Beginner Band - is for students that have not been in band before or learning a new instrument. Cadet Band - is for students with more than one year of band experience. This class concentrates on ensemble and performance skills preparing students for the next level of music. Concert Band - is for students with more than one year of band experience. This class is more advanced. Membership into this ensemble is based on audition, class participation, and eligibility. This band is one of our competition ensembles. Symphonic Band is for students with more than one year of band experience. This class is more advanced. Membership into this ensemble is based on audition, class participation, and eligibility. This band is one of our competition ensembles. Honor Band - is the top performing band at Bear Branch Junior High. Membership into this ensemble is based on audition, class participation and eligibility. This band is our top competition ensemble. Membership requires a higher level of responsibility and dedication. Activities include: a. Weekly after or before school sectionals for Honor and Symphonic Band. b. Solo and Ensemble Contest c. All-District and All-Region Band auditions d. Winter Concert e. Spring Concert f. Concert and Sight-reading Contest g. Competitive Band Festivals h. Other performances as scheduled. Performance/Rehearsal Expectations Students are expected to participate in the performances of their assigned ensemble. Failure to participate in either rehearsals or performances may result in student removal from the organization at the discretion of the band directors Concerts and performances are an integral component of the band curriculum. Students should consult their schedules for dates and times. Periodically, the schedule may change and updates will be communicated. Concerts are considered to have three parts: warm-up,

8 performance, and listening. The concert begins for the student at the warm-up. Punctuality is essential. The concert concludes when the last group performs and directors have given permission for students to be dismissed. A general report time will be given for all students. All concerts are a group effort, thus, attendance is required. All concerts are an extension of the classroom and will be graded accordingly. Students should be punctual and prepared for each performance/concert. In the event a performance causes a student to miss another class, the student is responsible to make up all missed work. Travel Guidelines It is a privilege to be a member of the BBJH Band. Members are expected to act in a responsible and professional manner at all times Students are reminded that all performances start and conclude at the band hall. As a member of the band, you are a representative of your school. Always be on your best behavior. If you are in doubt about an action, do not do it! Your conduct should be a good reflection on the school, the band, your home, yourself, and the community. Students must travel to events and return from events on the bus when provided. Any student wishing to leave with his/her parent must notify a director in writing with parent signature, prior to the event. Permission will be granted or denied based on the circumstances of the occasion. Students must have all necessary forms (Medical/Travel Release) completed and on file with the band office to travel on any trip with the band. Chaperones Adult chaperones are a great asset for our band program. Students will treat them as an extension of the band staff. Proper respect will be shown to all adults at all times. Uniform Band members are expected to follow MISD Dress Code expectations at all band activities. In addition, band members must meet an appropriate standardization of dress for performances. On many occasions part of our students evaluation is based on appearance. Black Dress Shoes (no athletic shoes, flat closed toe and heel) **Concert vest, bow ties, and tux shirt are supplied by MISD The students are responsible for keeping up with all pieces of their uniform. Damage to or loss of any part of the uniform will result in replacement charges. Ways Parents Can Help: - Help your child to be present, on time, prepared, and organized for school, rehearsal, and performances. - Help your child find time to practice. - Help your child keep their instrument in good working condition with all necessary accessories. An instrument in need of repair is very frustrating to your child. - Help your child have their uniform ready for performances. - Communicate with the directors any difficulties that arise. - Attend performances. - Volunteer. - Join the Band Booster Club. District-Owned Instruments MISD will provide a limited number of instruments for student use. These instruments include highly expensive instruments such as the bassoon, oboe, tenor saxophone, bari-saxophone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, and general percussion equipment. This equipment is generally purchased by the school district for student use because of its extremely high expense. Thus, all district owned equipment must be handled with optimum care. Students failing to take proper care of their school-issued instrument may lose the privilege to use such instruments. The following is a list of general procedures for district-owned instruments: 1. Order of distribution will be done based on chair order. If possible, students who play large instruments and are dependent upon MISD buses may be issued an instrument for homes use. This will be at the discretion of the directors and will be based on instrument availability and transportation needs.

10 2. Students will be held responsible for all district-owned instruments issued to them. This responsibility will include fire, theft, accidental damage, abuse and general maintenance not incurred through normal use. MISD does not provide insurance for individually owned or district-owned equipment. 3. Students and parents must sign an instrument checkout form before the student can use the instrument. MISD has mandated that ALL students using school owned instruments will pay a $ fee to MISD. This fee also applies to percussion students as they use numerous school owned instruments. This fee will be paid to: MISD. If the parent so desires, he/she may pay this fee out over several months, but all fees must be paid in full by December 10. If you choose this process please conference with the band director. This fee covers normal repair and maintenance of the instruments. If an instrument is damaged or lost by a student, then that student is responsible for the repair or replacement of the instrument. Special Note: District-owned instruments are not to be treated as free instruments. Basic supplies must still be purchased and repairs must be made just like personally owned instruments. Please strive to treat these instruments as if they were your own. Most district-owned instruments exceed $2,000 in value. Instrument Repair: All instruments must be repaired by certified instrument repair technicians. Neglectful or willful damage or loss of school instruments is the financial responsibility of the parent/guardian. Any time an instrument is put in the shop, you must provide a note to your band director which includes the repair shop information and bring your mouthpiece, other equipment and music every day. Instrument Storage: All instruments brought to school must have the student s name clearly labeled on it with a luggage type tag or a label maker. Since so many cases look alike, much confusion can be avoided. Bring your instrument everyday to the band hall in the morning before school and put it in your assigned area in the band hall and pick it up immediately after school everyday. No instruments should be left in the band hall overnight. Insurance: Insurance for your child s instrument is highly recommended. Many homeowners policies will allow you to add them. The band hall is locked when not in use, but instruments can be lost by accidentally leaving them on the bus or in the classroom. Please talk to your child about the

11 importance not setting their instrument down while waiting before or after school. MISD does not offer band instrument insurance. Fundraisers: The band will do no more than two student fundraisers per school year. All monies raised by the students will go into the Band Activity account. All monies become the property of the band and will be used to help pay for the spring trip and to further the band program. MISD Extracurricular Behavior Standards: With the approval of the principal and Superintendent, sponsors and coaches of extracurricular activities may develop and enforce standards of behavior that are higher than the District-developed Student Code of Conduct and may condition membership or participation in the activity on adherence to those standards. Extracurricular standards of behavior may take into consideration conduct that occurs at any time, on or off school property. Extracurricular behavioral standards shall not have the effect of discriminating on the basis of gender, race, color, disability, religion, ethnicity, or national origin. Students shall be informed of any extracurricular behavior standards at the beginning of each school year or when the students first begin participation in the activity. Students and their parents shall sign and return to the sponsor or coach a statement that they have read the extracurricular behavior standards and consent to them as a condition of participation in the activity. Standards of behavior for an extracurricular activity are independent of the Student Code of Conduct. Violations of these standards of behavior that are also violations of the Student Code of Conduct may result in independent disciplinary actions. A student may be removed from participation in extracurricular activities or may be excluded from school honors for violation of extracurricular standards of behavior for an activity or for violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Band Boosters: The BBJH Band Booster Club exists to assist the students and band directors in reaching the band program goals. This group supports band activities. There is a place for every parent in this organization. Your service is not only encouraged, but needed. Private Lesson Program: Private lesson instructors are an extension of the band staff. Most of our instructors are professional musicians in the Houston area and have advanced degrees and/or many years of performing experience. Lessons are extremely valuable to the individual student and are highly encouraged.

12 ALL students are ENCOURAGED to take individualized private instruction. Instructors are screened and interviewed by the district. Lessons will be given weekly during band classes or after-school.

14 Band Member Handbook Contract I will follow all rules and procedures I agree to keep all rehearsals silent and free of disruptions I agree to attend, be on time, and bring all of my supplies/music to all rehearsals and performances. 17 The BBJH Band is ON-LINE! Log on to Locate the PARENT/STUDENT LOGIN section of the web page. Login to your child s program account using the following login: bearbranchband This will bring up the main parent page. This will allow you to look at your child s program s public calendar, event list, handouts and other files. Clicking on an event on the calendar brings up the details for that event, such as times, attendance requirements and equipment/uniform necessities. Clicking on event list puts all of the calendar information in a list form for easy printing. When you enter your child s ID NUMBER, another more detailed screen appears with more options to view your student s uniform assignments, music assignments, financial records, forms and inventory. Enter your child s ID FIRST then you may create your own, unique password by clicking on the keys icon. You may make changes to your child s student information page (such as updating phone numbers and addresses if they change) to help the director communicate with you more effectively. 18 Magnolia ISD Private Lesson Program For students attending Magnolia High School Bear Branch Junior High Bear Branch 6 th Grade Campus What are Private Lessons? Private lessons are an essential element in the development of a child s musical education. The benefits of private lessons are endless. For the cost of cable or a cell phone bill, you can give your child the greatest gift in music. Private lessons offer one on one instruction by a professional musician on your child s instrument. A student in lessons will learn additional specialized skills such as proper tone production on their instrument through listening to their private instructor. They will also benefit by learning music faster, develop a characteristic sound, read music quicker, and learn to practice more efficiently. In lessons your child will receive instruction on their all-region music, solo and ensemble music, fundamental studies, and the music that the band performs throughout the year. Students taking lessons have a greater chance being selected into the all-region/all-state bands, earning first divisions at solo and ensemble competition, and being selected in the top ensemble in their school. Students that have been selected to the Texas All-state band are offered scholarships to attend universities from around the country. Many colleges also offer scholarships to students to perform in university ensembles even if they choose to major in something other than music. Private lessons are typically $ $25.00 per lesson for 30 minutes each lesson. A typical four-week month will cost $80 - $100. When do private lessons start? Private lessons begin during September. All of our teachers will be given the information of the students who want lessons and they will be calling you to set-up a time to start. Where and when are private lessons?

19 Lessons are once a week. The time and place is up to you and the private teacher. Most teachers teach their lessons at your child s campus or at MHS. If possible, some teachers may teach lessons during your child s band period. Can we take lessons in the summer? YES! You may take lessons in the summer; however the band hall will not be opened during the summer. Students must arrange with their teacher where and when they will take lessons. Some teachers will travel to your house, or they may ask for you to travel to theirs. We encourage all of our students to take privately over the summer. If my child takes lessons, is it guaranteed he or she will be in the top band? Lessons do not automatically place a child in the top band. There are also no guarantees that your child will automatically make the region band. As in life, students must work hard if they want to be successful. Lessons only work when a student uses them to their advantage. If a student takes lessons, but does not practice his or her instrument, then that student is not taking advantage of the quality of instruction he or she is receiving. How do I pay for private lessons? You will pay your private teacher directly. Band directors will not take money for private teachers. All teachers will ask for payment at the beginning of each month. We ask that you pay your teachers on time. For most private teachers, this is how they earn a living. Do I have to use one of the private teachers in the district? No, you do not have to use one of our teachers; however we highly encourage you to do so. We caution parents in finding teachers on their own. Not all great musicians are great teachers. In the case that any of our teachers are found not to be teaching to our standards, we ask those teachers to leave and the district will go through the process to find another private teacher. Our teachers go through a detailed interview and background check. Each teacher is selected for his or her exceptional abilities, and we only hire those teachers that will give our students a quality education. Are private lessons required to be in band? No, however we are HIGHLY encouraging them. As the bands in Magnolia ISD become larger, more students will begin to study privately. Taking lessons is extremely valuable to your child s success in band. There are no negatives, only positives in taking lessons. Private lesson s benefits everyone in the band.

29 WOODWIND CARE INFORMATION After PRACTICE!! Wipe off fingerprints (small cotton cloth) and swab the water from your instrument (Silk swab) Take off the reed and place it in your reed guard. Use the Silk swab to dry the inside of each section of your instrument. Never put your instrument up without swabbing it out. Store only items in your case that fit. Forcing music or other objects into your case can cause major damage to your instrument. EVERY WEEK: Wash mouthpiece (ONLY) with soap and warm (NOT HOT) water. BRASS CARE INFORMATION EVERY DAY: PRACTICE!! o Wipe off and oil valves o Wipe off fingerprints o Empty the water from your instrument (use a hand towel) o Store only items in your case that fit. Forcing music or other objects into your case can cause major damage to your instrument. Once a WEEK: o Wash mouthpiece with warm (NOT HOT) water or toothpaste and mouthwash. o Wipe off valves or Trombone slides and apply fresh lubricant. Once a MONTH: Give your instrument a bath 1. Fill the tub with warm (NOT HOT) water 2. Take out the valves and put them aside 3. Take all slides apart and place them in the water 4. Put soap on the snake and scrub out all pieces 5. Rinse thoroughly and dry 6. OIL VALVES AND GREASE ALL SLIDE.
