Presenting The Thirtieth Annual Sparta Summer s Workshop 2018 July 2 nd to July 27 th At Sparta Middle School Sparta, NJ
SPARTA SUMMER ARTS WORKSHOP 2018 We are proud to announce the Thirtieth Annual Summer s Workshop. This four-week program exploring art, drama, and music has been repeatedly recognized for its excellence in the arts enrichment of our youth throughout the area. The workshop is open to all students from Sparta as well as neighboring communities. We are extremely proud of the Summer s staff. It is comprised of a dozen experienced professionals offering courses in art, instrumental music, vocal music, theater, and performing groups. The educational environment is both challenging and nurturing with concern for each student and their role in the overall workshop experience. We also have invited guest artists to visit and share their expertise with the students with an overwhelmingly positive response. The Summer s Workshop meets Monday through Friday each of the four weeks (except for the first week which meets Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). The first week will begin on July 2 nd and the final week will end on July 27 th. Classes start at 9:00 AM and finish at 12:00 PM. You can choose the full four-week program (the best deal) or any of a number of abridged scheduling options listed on the registration form. On the evening of Thursday, July 26 th, the students and staff will present a Final s Evening. This evening will feature performing ensembles, art exhibits, and our musical production, THE JUNGLE BOOK. There are two types of leadership offerings for high school students interested in participating in the workshop. The Student-In-Training (SIT) is an open partial scholarship for students who are interested in being classroom assistants; an application is available on the Summer s Website. The Teaching Assistant (T.A.) position is a competitive employment opportunity for students who might be interested in pursuing a career in art/music education. The classes to be offered are described on the following pages. If you have a question as to the placement of your child in an instrumental class (i.e. beginning, intermediate or advanced) we recommend speaking with his/her music teacher to assist you with the selection. In addition, you may contact either of us with specific questions regarding placement and scheduling. If, during the course of the workshop, your child finds a class to be inappropriate for any reason, we accommodate schedule changes through the third week. Please fill out the enclosed registration form with remittance and mail or drop it off at Sparta Middle School. We are all looking forward to working with your child during the summer. Sincerely, Christian Arnold Concentration in Karen Scott Concentration in, Vocal and Drama S.A.W. 4 Sparta Summer s Workshop Classes By Period First Period Courses (9:00 9:45) Advanced Digital Photography: (Materials charge $20) You probably have some experience with Digital Photography and you're thinking that you'd like to take it to the next level. If so, this is the class for you. We will guide your photographic development, both creatively and technically. In short, you will be the next Alfred Steiglitz, Ansel Adams, Robert Capa and Steve McCurry (famous Photo dudes) all rolled into one. And you'll have a cooler camera to work with. Limit of 15 Mixed Bag of (World Inspirations): We are mixing it up! Do you feel like painting? Cool do it. Would you rather draw a little? Yep go for it. Maybe a little collage action? Uh huh, we re there. Or whatever you re about when you re about it; we ve got the resources, coaching and materials for you to create your own mixed bag of. Limit of 25 Creative Cooking: This class emphasizes the creative aspect of Cooking (as if it wasn't creative enough). This class will allow you to play with your food and how great is that. As Julia Child once said "no one is born a great cook, one learns by doing..." (Julia Child knew a thing or two about cooking). And, since when is so delicious? You can answer that question by enrolling in this class. Bon Appetit. Limit of 20 The of Knit & Crochet: Back for a fifth year, this class will teach the basics of knitting and crocheting through such projects as neck ties, hats, scarves, blankets, purses, jewelry and neck ties (did we mention neck ties especially neck ties). Limit of 16 Percussion Studio: This is the most fun one can have with two inanimate pieces of wood. This class will focus on melodic and rhythmic percussion; the students will learn how to integrate melodies into percussion music. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited Brass & Woodwind Studio: If you want to be awesome on your Band instrument and you look forward to continual challenges, then you should sign up for this class. This class will turn you into a Band-tastic Musician. Also good for a student interested in a second instrument. Enrollment is unlimited Beginning to Intermediate Strings Technique: Perfect for the 4 th, 5 th or 6 th grader who just wants to know what s going on in the music? Learn how to read music, properly play it, and how to make it sound good. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited Basically the Bass ics of Guitar and Bass: Want to learn how to play the guitar? Want to learn how to play bass too? How about basic maintenance like correctly tuning? Or changing a string? And which dials go to 11? If these mysteries of the universe intrigue you, enroll and prepare to learn. Limit of 12 Vocal & Dramatic Keyboarding: This keyboarding class is for beginning to intermediate piano students who would like to learn basic techniques or maintain and improve their skills. By the end of the course, the students will have a basic understanding of the keyboard and play some scales, and a few pieces of music. Or they will become simply amazing because that s the way they roll. Limit of 12 Broadway Cabaret: Our Broadway Cabaret class will focus on numerous famous Broadway and Movie songs. Students in the class may pick a favorite tune and sing, dance and act around it. It doesn't get much more fun than that when "things look swell and things look great". This course will "give our regards to old Broadway" because "that's entertainment." So, if you think you'd like to "spend a little time", singing some American classics, then we suggest you "come to the Cabaret, ol chum". Limit of 25
Second Period Courses (9:45 10:30) Beginning Digital Photography: (Materials charge $20) Set your camera to manual to explore digital photography. This class will lead students through fun activities that will teach them camera skills, digital graphics, fine art techniques, photo design, and collage. Students should bring their own cameras and flash drives for storage. Limit of 15 Painting 101: Imagination, Inspiration, Realization; envision your potential as a painter. But first, it doesn't hurt to learn some basic techniques about how to work with paint (just ask Michelangelo - he knew something about painting). You will explore a wide range of materials and techniques to max out your abilities. And you don't have to paint the ceiling to become famous... Limit of 25 Sculptopia: It's time to go three dimensional with all of its possibilities. In this class, we will be using clay, paper, wire, tape, cardboard, wood, foam, glass, crayons, confetti and cotton (did we leave anything out? That's for you to decide). You will become a modern-day Donatello (he's real, look him up), creating projects that will stand the test of time. Limit of 25 Spectacular Sewing: Not only is sewing spectacular, but this class focuses on spectacular sewing. And what makes it so spectacular? Sewing is cool; "Project Runway" and "Fashion Star" wouldn't be the same if the contestants didn't know how to sew. And sewing promotes individuality; if you can sew your own clothes, you'll never have an awkward moment again. Limit of 25 Intermediate Concert Band: This class is for students who have had at least a year of playing experience on their instrument. But that s not all; students who want to work on a second or third instrument can also take this class. But there s more; students that want to mentor younger students can take this class as well. The music for this class will be challenging, playable, and entertaining. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited JAZZ: This class is all about playing Jazz; learning a little about the origins, how to play the style and how to improvise. We will focus on jazz and commercial phrasing, basic jazz riffs and the fundamentals as well as advanced elements of jazz improvisation, or jamming. If you want to enhance your Jazzogrophy, feel free to enroll in this course. Enrollment is unlimited Solata Strings: This class is focused upon the performance aspect of 5 th and 6 th grade strings players to expose them to challenging yet appropriate string repertoire selected specifically for the students in the class. Sign up now! This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited Guitar World: As heard on the radio. Sometimes you just want to learn those riffs you hear on radio and TV. Easy learning for the beginner and new ideas for the intermediate. What better way to learn them than to take this class. We can t think of it and we re betting you can t either. Limit of 12 Vocal & Dramatic Chorus for Everyone: This class allows anyone who wants to sing the opportunity to do so. Grade level and experience do not matter. Proper vocal and choral techniques will be taught, the repertoire will cover from unison to four-part harmonies and will also support the musical THE JUNGLE BOOK. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited Dramarama: If you're looking for a chance to be spontaneous and dramatic, this is the class for you. The course focuses on the methods and techniques of improvisational acting. Every performance is unique; it will never occur the same way again. And you can be serious or maybe do some stand-up comedy. You never know since we re making it up as we go. Enrollment is unlimited
Third Period Courses (10:30 11:15) Digital Painting: Do you like to paint? Do you like computers? Do you like animation? Do you like not getting paint all over your hands and clothing? (or is that just your mom that feels that way?) This might just be the class for you. You can create realistic or surrealistic designs and pictures. Or something else - the computer's the limit. And that's just the beginning... Limit of 16 Drawing Workshop: Nothing is more basic in the art world than a good old drawing. Drawing pictures puts the "fun" in fundamental; and you will learn those fundamentals of drawing, including perspective, composition and form. And you won't only use a pencil but will also work with charcoal and ink. Limit of 25 Intro to Medium: In this fun and exciting new class we will learn drawing, various styles of painting, mixed media, clay, colored pencils, graffiti, markers, fibers, watercolors, paper, cardboard, printmaking, stenciling, found objects, even jewelry! So, are you ready for a new world and a cool adventure into art? Then come along to the best class there is!! Limit of 25 STEAM: You probably already know about the newest, coolest subject in school - STEM. We took cool and made it even cooler (if that's even possible) by adding the letter "A". And the "A" stands for - wait for it - ART. And that's why we call it STEAM. With a focus on art and design, students will make, tinker, create, play and invent as they learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Advanced Concert Band: An advanced concert band with the goal of finding challenging music for all of its members. The band plays a variety of music from marches to sound tracks to popular movies and musicals. This class is offered to high school students and advanced middle school students. This group will perform in the concert during the final week of the workshop. Enrollment is unlimited Woodshedding: There are Musicians whose performances look effortless. The really great musicians spent a lot of time in the figurative "woodshed", learning their instrument on the next level and learning how to make it sound that much better. If you're looking to get to the next level and feel like taking the trip to the woodshed, come join this class. Enrollment is unlimited Intermediate Jazz Band: This class is for any instrumental music student who is interested in playing jazz. The class will focus on a beginning to intermediate jazz repertoire. Students interested in participating in this class should have had at least two years playing experience on their instrument. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment will be limited based on instrument Presto Strings: Advanced repertoire for the advanced player. Concert selections oriented around those who participate. This class is for the adventurous player. Only really exciting, daring, and beautiful pieces will be explored. Bring your imagination and make suggestions. Soloists considered. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited Ukulele: There are those who play guitar and there are those who don't. And they just might play the Ukulele (and that could be YOU). Limit of 12 Vocal/Drama Keyboarding: This keyboarding class is for beginning to intermediate piano students who would like to learn basic techniques or maintain and improve their skills. By the end of the course, the students will have a basic understanding of the keyboard and play some scales, and a few pieces of music. Or they will become simply amazing because that s the way they roll. Limit of 12 Characters & Choreography: Do you want to dance? Do you want to act? Do you like to dance? Do you like to act? Are you a dancer? Are you an actor? Are you interested in dancing or acting in the musical production? Enrollment is unlimited and it is suggested that students take this class in tandem with the musical production THE JUNGLE BOOK. Enrollment is unlimited
Fourth Period Courses (11:15 12:00) Set Design: If you dig the Broadway scene, but not the acting part, you're probably a back stage kind of person. The show must go on and that won't happen without the behind-the-scenes efforts of the stage crew (that would be you). So, join the stage crew and be part of the magic without having to learn all those lines. Limit of 20 Advanced Painting: We're going to take painting to the next level in this course. You will learn the techniques that are the tools of advanced painting, such as different strokes, glazing and blending techniques. You'll also consider various treatments (or mistreatments - just kidding) of your subject material. The better you become, the more you will enjoy this thing we call painting, so let's get started. Limit of 25 Raku: If you're not familiar with Raku pottery, you might want to check it out. It's the real deal, using a kiln and some ancient Japanese techniques to create some of the coolest pottery imaginable. In this class, you will not only learn the "ancient secrets" of Raku, but you will make some pretty cool bowls, pots, cups and pretty much anything else that you can think of. Limit of 20 (8 th Grade and Up) Cooking & Science: Everyone likes food, so it's a good thing when we know how to cook it. And the more we know about cooking, the better the food. And the better the food, the more we like it. It's a "delicious" (not a vicious) cycle. Cooking is basically a bunch of chemical and physical reactions so you can think of a kitchen as a laboratory of all things food. Limit of 15 Advanced Jazz Band: This class will feature more advanced jazz band music for students that are seriously interested in playing jazz regardless of difficulty. Students interested in participating in this class should have had at least four years playing experience on their instrument, at least two years experience in a jazz band, and the ability or confidence to take improvised solos. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment will be limited based on instrument Woodwind Ensemble: We re on the look-out for the following instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, and even Baritone Sax. If you play any of these instruments, then we want you in this class and we don't think you'll be sorry that you joined. The Music will range from easier pop arrangements to light classical so it will taste good but still be healthy. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited R.O.C.K. Band: Open to Guitar, Keys, Bass, Drums and especially vocals, this class will spell out the logistics of putting together a rock and roll band. Students are encouraged to be creative and not intimidated, cause whatever it is you do it s good because you re doing it. Limit of 3 per instrument except guitar. This class will perform in the Concert. Limit of 6 guitarists Play The Pit: If you've ever listened to a Musical, you'll hear singing and... something else. Why, that would be a "Pit Orchestra" performing and supporting the vocal melody. This class is for anyone interested in exploring the advanced world of the Pit Orchestra; a world which involves a high level of Musical understanding and flexibility. This class will perform with the musical "ALADDIN". Enrollment is unlimited Vocal/Drama Musical Production THE JUNGLE BOOK : All students are encouraged to participate in the varied facets of the musical as it will be one of the highlights of the Summer s Workshop. Opportunities exist in every category of the production. This class will perform in the Concert. Enrollment is unlimited
