The grading system is as follows: Early Elementary Basic five-finger positions with minimal movement over the keyboard. Beginning level single-note melodies; some basic, easy to read, left-hand harmonies. Basic rhythm patterns, including quarter, half and whole notes. Mid-Elementary Slight extension of five-finger positions, with some scale patterns and octave movement. Melody and harmony; beginning to include some basic chords. Rhythm patterns now include eighths, dotted quarters and triplets. Introduction of new time signatures (i.e. 6/8, 2/4). Key signatures progressing up to two or three sharps or flats. Later Elementary Movement over keyboard more extensive. Some simple voicing being shared between the hands. More complicated rhythms introduced (i.e. syncopation). Key signatures include two or three sharps or flats; some use of accidentals. 2 View sample pages and/or hear audio excerpts for many Willis Music publications online. It is fast and easy! Rhythms are more complicated (styles such as jazz, boogie, ragtime, etc.). Later Intermediate Extensive movement over the keyboard, requiring fairly advanced reading and technical skills. Very colorful, musically intricate. Technically challenging (i.e. passages of large chords, scale patterns, grace notes, etc.).
