1 COMPETITION RULES 7th International Choral Conducting Competition TOWARDS POLYPHONY I. GENERAL TERMS 1. The 7th International Choral Conducting Competition TOWARDS POLYPHONY (the Competition ) is being held by the Faculty of Musical Education, Choral Art and Church Music of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław (the Academy ). 2. The Competition is part of the Musical Programme of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław The Competition will take place from 7 to 10 December 2016 at the Academy s registered office: pl. Jana Pawła II nr 2, Wrocław. II. PARTICIPANTS The Competition is open to choir conductors, students of or graduates from Polish higher schools of music education or foreign art schools of higher education, born after 7 December III. ENTRY 1. An entry is submitted by filling in a Competition entry form, posted on the Competition s website: A sample Competition entry form is attached to these Rules as Appendix No The following should be appended to the completed Competition entry form: 1) a current portrait photograph, 2) a scan of an ID document with the entrant s date of birth, 3) a scan of a higher education diploma or a certificate of the student status, 4) a video recording (15-minute long, a working session with an ensemble a rehearsal or a performance made in the last two years). 5) an artistic CV (up to 2000 characters including spaces) 1. A reference from the Rector of the institution of higher education represented by the entrant, if any, would be welcome. 2. The video recording, the photo and the document scans should be uploaded to one of the data storage services (e.g. Dropbox, SkyDrive, Box, Google Disk). The links to the documents and the recording should be provided in the form. 3. The submission of a completed Competition entry form is regarded as acceptance of these Competition Rules. 4. The deadline for submission of Competition entry forms is 10 September 2016.

2 IV. QUALIFICATION OF ENTRANTS 1. Entrants will be qualified by a committee composed of the staff members of the Chair of Choral Art and Choir Conducting of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, on the basis of completed Competition entry forms including all the documents required under the Competition Rules. 2. A maximum of 16 entrants will be admitted to the first stage of the Competition. 3. The Committee may set up a list of stand-by entrants. 4. The list of the entrants admitted to the first stage of the Competition will be posted on the website: and by 30 September Additionally, the successful entrants will receive a written notification from the Organisers by 5 October V. FEES 1. The entrants admitted to the Competition are required to pay a competition fee amounting to EUR (or its equivalent in PLN at the mean rate of exchange prevailing on the day of payment) by 10 October Transfers to be made to: Akademia Muzyczna im. A failure to pay the competition fee by the deadline specified in Sec. 1 above will be regarded as the entrant s decision not to participate in the Competition. 3. The Competition fee will not be refunded if the entrant decides not to participate in the Competition after 1 October The Organisers will provide board and accommodation to the competitors participating in a given Competition stage. 5. From the moment of a failure to qualify for a successive Competition stage the costs of any further board and accommodation (i.e. starting from the hotel s next check-in time) will be covered by the participant themselves. 6. All accompanying persons will pay the costs of their stay in Wrocław on their own. 7. The Organisers will not refund the participants travelling expenses. 2

3 VI. COMPETITION PROCEDURE 1. The Competition will be composed of three stages, during which the participants will be evaluated on the basis of their work with choir ensembles. STAGE I. ROMANTIC LIED AND OLD SACRED MUSIC A: Romantic lied Time limit: 10 minutes Ensemble: Feichtinum Choir of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław B: old sacred music Time limit: 10 minutes Ensemble: Senza Rigore Chamber Choir of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław Work on two pieces of music chosen by lot drawn from the eight works given in the Stage I programme. For the purposes of the draw, the pieces have been divided into two groups (A Romantic lieder, B old sacred music). Each participant will choose by lot (without returning the drawn lot to the pool) one piece from each group. The draw will take place on 7 December STAGE II. 20TH CENTURY SECULAR MUSIC A: song B: madrigal Time limit: 45 minutes; the participant will determine themselves how to split the rehearsal. Ensemble: Chamber Choir of the I.J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań. Work on two pieces of music chosen by lot drawn from the eight works given in the Stage II programme. For the purposes of the draw, the pieces have been divided into two groups (A songs, B madrigals). Each participant will choose by lot (without returning the drawn lot to the pool) one piece from each group. The draw will take place on 8 December STAGE III. MODERN MUSIC A: a modern piece in traditional notation Time limit: 30 minutes (a morning rehearsal) Ensemble: The National Music Forum Choir (1st composition) B: a modern piece in avant-garde notation Time limit: 30 minutes (an afternoon rehearsal) Ensemble: The National Music Forum Choir (2nd composition) 3

4 Work on and a concert performance of the two pieces chosen by lot out of the six listed in the stage programme. The pieces have been divided into two groups (A traditional notation, B avant-garde notation). Each participant will draw one piece from each group. Each participant will work in two stages: 30 minutes on piece A and after the lunch break 30 minutes on piece B. The draw will take place on 9 December A maximum of 16 entrants will be admitted to STAGE I, on the basis of the entries submitted by them. The eight participants with the highest STAGE I scores will be admitted to STAGE II. The five participants with the highest STAGE II scores will be admitted to STAGE III. VII. PRIZES 1. The Competition s International Jury may award the following prizes: 1st PRIZE A cash award of PLN 8,000 A diploma 2nd PRIZE A cash award of PLN 5,000 A diploma 3rd PRIZE A cash award of PLN 3,000 A diploma DISTINCTIONS PLN 1,000 A diploma 2. Under the Competition Rules, other, special prizes may also be awarded. 3. All Competition participants will receive certificates of participation. 4. Decisions of the Jury are final. 4

8 3. Payment of the fee is required for the registration of a person as an observer. Should a person registered as an observer decide not to participate in the event after 1 October 2016, the fee will not be returned. 4. The Organisers will not provide observers with board or accommodation and will not cover their travelling expenses. 5. The fee covers: 1) An ID card and promotional materials, 2) The right to participate in auditions and meetings with the jurors, 3) Visual materials with the Competition s repertoire, 4) A standing ticket to the gala concert, 5) A methodology meeting, 6) The right to participate in an official dinner attended by the Competition laureates and jurors, 7) A certificate of participation in the Competition in the capacity of an observer. XI. COPYRIGHT AND PERSONAL DATA Upon the submission of a completed Competition entry forms, the entrant: 1) Agrees to photos being taken with their image during the Competition, their fixation, multiple use, processing and reproduction, by any means for the Academy s promotional and archival purposes, without the need for an approval each time; 2) Grants the Competition Organisers free of charge the right to use the audiovisual artistic recordings made during the Competition or the Finalists Concert exclusively for non-commercial purposes, including promotional and archival ones, in the following fields of use: 1.2.a) as regards fixation and reproduction recording by means of digital technology of sound and picture, making and releasing them on a CD and/or DVD or on other carriers, 1.2.b) as regards trade in copies on which an artistic performance has been fixed placing such copies on the market, lending or leasing them, 1.2.c) as regards dissemination of performances in a manner other than that specified in Subsec. b) above broadcasting, rebroadcasting and performing, and making the performance available to the public on selected web pages; 3) agrees to the processing of their personal data for purposes related to the Competition, in accodance with the declaration made in the entry form. Personal data are provided by an entrant on a voluntary basis, but their submission is required for participation in the Competition. 8

9 FINAL PROVISIONS 1. The Organisers reserve the right to amend these Rules. 2. The Organisers may cancel the Competition for important reasons. 3. These Rules come into force on 17 March
