2 WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Date of birth: 27 January, 1756, Salzburg, Austria. Date of death: 5 December, 1791, Vienna, Austria. Notable achievements: Mozart composed more than 600 works, ranging from operas, to concertos, to symphonies, to chamber music, to choral works. He was prodigiously gifted in both performance and composition from a very early age. He is believed to have written his first composition at the age of five and given his first performance a year later for Austrian royalty. Accompanied by his father and his sister his early life involved much touring and performing around Europe as a wunderkind. But by the time he reached his teenage years, it was harder to eke out a living as a child prodigy. Unable to secure a coveted court appointment in Salzburg, he moved to Vienna. He married Constanze Weber in This last decade of his life is extraordinary in that coupled with a rapid decline in financial circumstances came the most extraordinary output of compositions in almost every genre, considered to be some of the greatest masterpieces ever written. Best known works: Requiem, Jupiter Symphony, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, Clarinet Concerto, 30 piano concertos, 23 string quartets. What he said about talent: A man of ordinary talent will always be ordinary, whether he travels or not; but a man of superior talent (which I cannot deny myself to be without being impious) will go to pieces if he remains forever in the same place. 2
