2 What is the one moment of Mozart s music you cannot live without? The Classic 100 Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is probably the best-known and best-loved composer in history. In less than 36 years, this musical genius produced more than 600 pieces of music, from simple but charming pieces children learn in their first piano lessons, to the full splendour of the opera stage. It s some of the finest music ever written, and from the enthusiastic response from thousands of ABC Classic FM listeners, it s music that holds a special place in the hearts of music lovers around Australia. Throughout 2006, the world has been celebrating the 250th anniversary of Mozart s birth. The Classic 100 Mozart survey has been an opportunity for listeners to make a personal response to this monumental event. Their comments have revealed how passionately they value Mozart s music, how deeply it has touched their lives and how exalted it makes them feel. Perhaps paradoxically, it seems to be the slower movements the adagios, the andantes, the larghettos that have uplifted people the most. For example, for every single piano concerto that features in the top 100, the slow movement was singled out as being of special significance. And of course, the number one choice, the Adagio from the Clarinet Concerto, is also a slow movement. But for Mozart, a slower tempo is first and foremost a vehicle for beauty, and the many examples in this collection offer the listener a journey into a still point of transcendent delight. Of course, Mozart can also sparkle, and our listeners have not neglected such gems as the Alleluja from his motet Exsultate, jubilate, the Rondo alla turca, and the famous opening movement of Eine kleine Nachtmusik. It s one of the wonders of Mozart, that 2 there is music to match our every mood: music of infectious joy, music of pure energy, music of jubilant solemnity, of aching sorrow, of high drama. It is therefore no surprise that his music has been snapped up by other media, especially for television advertising and for film. (Indeed, the C major piano concerto KV467 has come to be known as the Elvira Madigan as a result of the way its slow movement featured in the 1967 Swedish film of that name.) It s probably in the realm of opera that Mozart s talent for expressing the full range of our human emotions is most evident. The survey results reflect this, with 30 of the Classic 100 Mozart moments coming from his operas. The arrogant swagger of Don Giovanni, the precocious advances of the young Cherubino and the patient suffering of the betrayed Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, the grave wisdom of Sarastro and the incandescent rage of the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute these and many other magical moments are represented in this collection. But perhaps the supreme example of Mozart s genius in writing for the human voice is his awe-inspiring Requiem, of which almost every movement features in the Classic 100 Mozart. Size isn t everything, however, and the number two position in the survey belongs to the miniature masterpiece Ave verum Corpus, a work of absolute simplicity and purity. When ABC Classic FM announced the Classic 100 Mozart, there were concerns that a single-composer survey would be too narrow a field. Would there be 100 different moments of Mozart among our listeners favourites? The results proved there were that many and more, and this collection demonstrates not only the extraordinary breadth and depth of Mozart s music, but also its beauty and humanity.
