2 The Choir of St Andrew s Brighton The Choir of St Andrew s Brighton is Victoria s oldest Choir and St Andrew s Brighton has the longest continual musical tradition of any institution in Victoria. The glorious sounds of the St Andrew s Choir and spectacular War Memorial Grand Organ fill one of the most beautiful acoustics in Australia throughout the year. Singing continually since 1842, through five different church buildings, thousands of Choristers and over 25 Organists and Directors of Music, the St Andrew s Choir continues to be renowned for the excellence of the music performed each week in worship and in concerts. The St Andrew s Choir leads the music at services during School Terms (excluding long weekends) and during Holy Week, Advent and Christmas including the immensely popular Christmas Eve Carol Service, presented at St Andrew s since St Andrew s Choral Scholars (aged between 10 and 18) receive a St Andrew s Choral Scholarship with a 75% remission of school fees to attend either Brighton Grammar School (for boys) or Firbank Grammar School (for girls). Places are highly sought-after and are offered through an audition process. Since 1924, Choral Scholars at St Andrew s Brighton have had an unparalleled head start in life. The choral scholar experience is the best musical education available to children; it also offers the benefits of skills that will last a lifetime. As part of a living international tradition, the repertoire sung by the St Andrew s Choir is challenging, but immensely rewarding, with an active repertoire of over 200 pieces. All Choristers are trained to work to a professional standard - other benefits include building excellent teamwork and social skills and a sense of commitment and responsibility. Performing at a highly professional level, St Andrew s Choral Scholars gain a natural self-confidence, as well as the appreciation of the benefits and rewards that result from dedication to excellence and attention to detail. All this is combined with a dynamic social experience! As this is a rare and unique opportunity for young Australians to experience the benefits and opportunities given to children in the UK, Europe and the USA, St Andrew s Brighton - together with Brighton and Firbank Grammar Schools - makes every effort to make St Andrew s Choral Scholarships possible for any boy or girl with the right musical ability. Boys can enter Brighton Grammar School as St Andrew s Choral Scholars from Year 4, moving from the Treble to the Alto, then to the Tenor or Bass sections of the Choir as they get older. Further information about the St Andrew s Choral Scholarships for boys is available from the Brighton Grammar School website - Girls can enter Firbank Grammar School as St Andrew s Choral Scholars from Year 4. Further information about the St Andrew s Choral Scholarships for girls is available from the Firbank Grammar School website: The St Andrew s Choral Scholarships are tenable to Year 12 for both boys and girls, providing an invaluable continuity and consistency in the Choral Scholars education - especially for boys as their voices change. Although the St Andrew s Choir consists primarily of Choral Scholars, non-scholar girls and boys, and adult men and women, are welcome to join subject to audition. As the oldest continuing Anglican Church in Victoria, music has been at the heart of the community at St Andrew s Brighton since the opening of the Church on St Andrew s Day in The Choir of St Andrew s Brighton is proud to have a large number of successful alumni who pursue active professional careers in music and the arts, law, medicine, science, education, business, the military and politics. If you would like to enquire about joining the St Andrew s Choir, the Organist and Director of Music, Thomas Heywood, would be delighted to hear from you by dom@standrewsbrighton.org.au. 3 The War Memorial Grand Organ St Andrew s Brighton has the longest continual tradition of pipe organs and organ music in Victoria. In 1843, the first pipe organ in the earliest St Andrew s building was the first pipe organ locally built in what is now the State of Victoria, and only the third pipe organ to be heard in a public building in south-eastern mainland Australia. It was built by the first Organist of St Andrew s, Peter Hurlstone. Hurlstone had also assembled the Port Phillip District s earlier two pipe organs in the previous year. Subsequent instruments dated from 1857 (Jesse Biggs, Melbourne), 1860 (Hill & Son, London) and 1923 (W.L. Roberts, Melbourne and Adelaide). Following a devastating fire in February 1961 which destroyed the third church building (the western four bays of the 1857 nave remain internally reconfigured as the Pioneer Chapel), the War Memorial Grand Organ was dedicated on Easter Day 1964 in the newly rebuilt Cathedral of Light, one of the largest church buildings in Australasia, and has been played almost daily ever since for services, concerts, weddings, funerals, lessons and recordings. Australian-made between 1962 and 1964 by the Melbourne firm of Davis & Laurie, the instrument is a memorial to Australians killed in the 20th century s two World Wars. There are nearly 3,000 pipes and 64 speaking stops speaking into one of the most beautiful acoustics in Australia. At the time of its opening, the instrument aroused much attention as one of the most exciting new instruments in Australasia and was the subject of many enthusiastic reviews both around Australasia and internationally. The organ is one of very few in the world with twin four-manual consoles. It also has a full-length 32 wooden reed the Contra Bombarde. Contemporaneous with the large locally-built instrument in St Patrick s Cathedral, Melbourne opened three months after the St Andrew s organ, the instrument was the first in Australasia to have a horizontal reed stop en chamade the Festal Trumpet. The Gallery and Transept divisions are over 100 feet apart, giving inspirational stereo antiphonal effects. One of Australasia s landmark musical instruments, the War Memorial Grand Organ provides exquisite softer, and thrilling louder, tonal colours showing why it has remained the subject of so much attention since its opening in 1964! The Grand Organ Master Series, on the first Sunday of the month from February to November, showcases this superb example of Australian craftsmanship, and features the finest original and transcribed organ music from the last four centuries, including the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Handel, Verdi, Brahms, Liszt, Debussy, Mendelssohn, Elgar and others.
