1 TUE FEB 27 9 PM AMERICAN CREED WITH DAVID M. KENNEDY AND CONDOLEEZZA RICE STORIES THAT DEFINE US ALSO INSIDE On WFMT, we honor Black History Month with the music of African American composers and performers, and toast the Lunar (Chinese) New Year, the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, and the music from this year s Academy Award nominees.

2 Air Check Dear Member, This month, WTTW is proud to bring you a national initiative that is truly emblematic of the role public media can play in civil discourse: American Creed, coproduced with our partners at Citizen Film. In this documentary and community engagement campaign, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, historian David M. Kennedy, and a committed group of unlikely activists (including Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon) explore the idea of a unifying set of ideals an American creed. Join us on February 27 for the premiere of this important initiative, which strives to define what it means to be American. Also this month, WTTW11 marks Black History Month with an array of relevant content across our platforms (see page 7 for details). Season 2 of Victoria on Masterpiece continues, as does Ann Curry s poignant series We ll Meet Again, The Interview Show with Mark Bazer, and Antiques Roadshow. American Experience recalls a deadly 1920 bombing on Wall Street. NOVA explores, from an archeological standpoint, the legendary Dunkirk operation during World War II and what we can learn from a prehistoric skeleton discovered in Mexico. Frontline delves into The Gang Crackdown, and the five-part series Impossible Builds shines a spotlight on a variety of mind-boggling architectural marvels. Finally, we indulge in a unique Wisconsin culinary institution in We re Here for a Fish Fry. Be sure to activate your WTTW Passport subscription to watch these and many more anytime, anywhere! On wttw.com, American Experience: The Gilded Age examines the struggles between titans of industry and the workers they employed. What was our city s Gilded Age like? Also, suburban Chicago native Nina Chanel Abney is a fast-rising artist who is a keen chronicler of social and racial issues. She discusses her career and her first solo exhibition opening at the Cultural Center this month. Finally, Black colleges and universities have long been powerful incubators and important centers of change. What is their role now? Stanley Nelson, director of Independent Lens: Tell Them We Are Rising, explains. On WFMT, we ll also honor Black History Month with recordings of African American composers and performers, and give shoutouts to the Lunar (Chinese) New Year and the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. We ve invited back Michael Phillips, film critic of the Chicago Tribune, to discuss and sample music from this year s Academy Award nominees; a week s worth of short features and an hour-long special will begin on the final Monday of the month. And the season continues at Lyric Opera of Chicago Lisa Flynn and Lyric s Roger Pines will co-host live broadcasts of the openings of Bellini s I Puritani and Mozart s Così fan tutte. On wfmt.com, discover African American artists who are changing classical music today. Go behind the scenes of Elizabeth Cree, a new opera by the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell that has its Chicago premiere this February. And find the perfect playlist to make this Valentine s Day your most romantic yet. Finally, tune in to WTTW11 on February 4 before the Oscars to watch the winning program in this year s WTTW Viewer s Choice Awards! And thank you for your support. DG [19:53] In the Spotlight Yonghoon Lee Il Trovatore s Troubadours and Gypsies Back at the Met The Metropolitan Opera s current production of Verdi s melodrama, staged by Sir David McVicar, moves the opera s original time frame from Spain in the 15th century to the Spain of the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th. Maria Agresta portrays Leonora, beloved of the brooding Count di Luna (Quinn Kelsey) and also the title character, the wandering troubadour Manrico (Yonghoon Lee). Further complicating this triangle are the sinister manipulations of the gypsy Azucena (Anita Rachvelishvili). Packed with some of Italian opera s most recognizable melodies, Il Trovatore is being conducted by Marco Armiliato. 21 In the Spotlight Albina Shagimoratove Shagimuratove and Brownlee in Bellini s Puritani at Lyric Few composers wrote more lyrically and thrillingly for the human voice than did Vincenzo Bellini, whose I Puritani is back on the Lyric Opera House stage this month with belcanto artists Albina Shagimoratove and Lawrence Brownlee in the leading roles of Elvira and Arturo. Set during the English Civil War in the 17th century between Puritans and Royalists, I Puritani was an immediate sensational hit when it opened in Paris in It didn t reach American shores until the early 20th century with New York productions by the Met and at the Manhattan Opera House, being apparently neglected in this country for some 50 years thereafter, until Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano starred in a 1955 Lyric Opera of Chicago production. This year s Lyric Puritani will star Anthony Clark Evans and Adrian Sâmpetrean along with Shagimuratova and Brownlee, and will be conducted by Enrique Mazzola. He now teaches at Trinity College of Music, in addition to lecturing at music festivals and writing for BBC Music Magazine and The Guardian. His recent pieces for The Guardian include an appreciation of Pierre Boulez with an evaluation of the great composer-conductor s influence, a look at Debussy s opera Pelleas and Melisande, a light-hearted review of the Florence Foster Jenkins movie, a profile of a family of young British classical musicians, and a wry meditation on ear worms, those tunes you get into your head and can t silence. Tom has been a regular program host on the BBC s Radio Three with shows called Music Matters and Hear and Now. His newest series is called The Listening Service and will examine a wide range of topics: composers, performers, recordings, events. 24 In the Spotlight Pretty Yende Donizettian Comedy at the Met Gaetano Donizetti composed a number of tragic operas, like Lucia di Lammermoor and the British-themed queens trilogy, but he also left behind two sparkling comedies: Don Pasquale and L Elisir d Amore (The Elixir of Love). It s not only the hit tenor aria Una furtiva lagrima that recommends this opera; ranging from pathos to high comedy, the music is a delight throughout. Soprano Pretty Yende is making her role debut as Adina, who s loved by Nemorino, sung by Matthew Polenzani. But perhaps the best role in the whole score is that of the con man Dr. Dulcamara, portrayed by Ildebrando D Arcangelo, whose magic elixir maybe it s just red wine? is touted as the secret of amorous success, and Nemorino falls for this outworn pitch in a big way. Davide Luciano rounds out the cast as Adina s other would-be lover, Sergeant Belcore. and 6:00 pm. After the news: William Hirtz The Wizard of Oz Fantasy Jon Kimura Parker, p. The program features CSO concertmaster Robert Chen as soloist in the two opening works. Arvo Pärt s Fratres is a haunting, meditative score that exists in a number of versions; this one is scored for solo violin, string orchestra, and percussion. (Like Järvi, Pärt was born in the Baltic nation of Estonia.) Chen also solos in Bartók s Violin Concerto No. 1, less often heard than his later work in this medium, a youthful tribute to the violinist he loved and lost, Stefi Geyer. Its lyrical first movement is contrasted with a lively, more hardhitting finale. The concert ends with Beethoven s Pastoral Symphony. Sunday, February 11, 8:00 pm

The last of the three operas he composed to a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, Così will star Alessandro Corbelli as Don Alfonso, a cynical old man who bets with two younger ones that their fiancees will not remain faithful to them even for one day. The three set up an elaborate scheme to fool the young women, and they re abetted by the sisters maidservant, Despina (Elena Tsallagova in her company debut). Portraying the bemused and confused sisters are Marianna Crebassa as Dorabella and Ana Maria Martinez as Fiordiligi. A Mozartean sidelight on Martinez: she is the singing voice of the character of Alessandra on Amazon s Mozart in the Jungle. She returns to Lyric after a number of acclaimed appearances here in recent seasons. James Gaffigan makes his Lyric debut conducting. Saturday, February 17, 7:15 pm in D. Stravinsky: Jeu de Cartes.
