2 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH From 1935 until his retirement in 1991, Ed Roche recorded the sounds of Kansas City. The first engineer for Kansas City s Municipal Auditorium, Roche installed and operated the then stateof-the-art audio system. He meticulously documented music and civic events, including performances of the Kansas City Philharmonic. In 1952, Roche established Crown Recording Studio. Crown quickly became one of Kansas City s leading studios. Over the years, Roche recorded thousands of bands, choruses and radio programs including the Kansas City Hour. Roche produced tapes for the Nazarene Church that were distributed internationally. During the 1980s, he preserved the open-reel tapes and instantaneous cut discs for the Harry Truman Presidential Library. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Ed Roche Collection, also known as the Kansas City Jazz Festival Collection, was gifted to the UMKC Miller Nichols Library by the family estate after his death in LaBudde Special Collections houses the festival programs for , while the majority of the collection resides in the care of its audio division, Marr Sound Archives. The audio collection contains live recordings engineered by Ed Roche between the years 1964 and The Kansas City Jazz Festival was an annual concert staged at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. The event was staged during Kansas City Jazz Week, a celebration of the city s rich jazz heritage. Produced by Kansas City Jazz, Inc., a committee composed of civic and business leaders, the Festival enjoyed enthusiastic community support. The all-day festival featured local jazz groups and leading national acts including Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley, Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry, Herb Ellis, Al Cohn, Lou Rawls, Urbie Green, June Christy, Charlie Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Gene Harris and the Three Sounds, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Count Basie, Jimmy Rushing and Buddy Rich. The local groups featured top Kansas City musicians such as Jay McShann, Carmel Jones, Warren Durrett, Marilyn Maye, Bettye Miller and Milt Abel, Willie Rice Big Band, Pete Eye, Eddie Baker, George Salisbury, Frank Smith, Steve Miller and many others. Ed Roche, the audio engineer for the Municipal Auditorium, recorded the festivals on open-reel tapes and stored them away in his recording studio. After Roche died in 1997, his family donated his collection of tapes, instantaneous-cut acetate discs and other recordings to the Marr Sound Archives. The Kansas City Jazz Festival Collection comprises seventy-two 12 and forty-four 7 open-reel acetate tapes that were recorded between 1964 and The tapes average 45 minutes long. Accompanying concert programs list the performers and their scheduled times. These unique recordings document a slice of Kansas City s vibrant jazz history. They capture internationally known jazz artists sharing the stage with Kansas City s preeminent jazz musicians. This vital research collection captures the spontaneity of the event the essence of jazz. MS237-Ed Roche Collection (Kansas City Jazz Festival Collection) 2
