3 Dear Parents, Friends, Colleagues, and Members of the Community, I would like to welcome each of you to the opening concert of the Missouri Choral Directors Association Conference Students from all over our great state have come together to share their music with their conductor, with each other and with every member of the audience. They have learned their music individually, worked as a group throughout the day and will come together in this performance, just like puzzle pieces fitting together perfectly to make a beautiful picture of sound. German-Jewish poet and author, Berthold Auerbach said Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. In this busy, hurried world, many of us have come to this concert with many things on our minds and fighting for our attention. I would invite you to sit back, relax and let the sounds of these young people engulf you to fill your soul. Since our founding in 1959, the Missouri Choral Directors Association has made this beauty possible, in part, by relentlessly pursuing the first objective in our constitution: to encourage higher standards of choral singing and its performance. We are immensely proud to sponsor several honor choirs which represent excellence in choral music from elementary age to adult. At this conference we will feature the Missouri Youth Honor Choirs, the All-State Show Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and the Church/Community Honor Choir. We hope you enjoy today s performance! Jonathan D. Owen President, Missouri Choral Director Association

32 MCDA Summer Conference MCDA Summer Conference July July , - 21, MCDA is a state organization of the American Choral Directors Association. Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music's position in American society. ACDA membership consists of approximately 18,000 choral directors who represent more than one million singers across the United States. ACDA members teach choral music in public and private schools - kindergarten through senior high school - and at the college and university levels. They conduct a variety of choral groups, including boychoirs, children's choirs, men's and women's choruses, junior and senior high school choirs, college and university choruses, ethnic choirs, vocal-jazz ensembles, and symphony choruses. They also conduct choirs in their communities and in their places of worship.
