3 CW: RESEARCH CRITERIA WHAT QUALIFIES? Each creative work submitted as research, MUST: - meet the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) definition of research: creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the extent that it is new and creative - be substantiated by documentary evidence ERA 2010 Submission Guidelines - have a research contribution or statement (if major category) in IRMA - have faculty research committee/sub-committee approval - have a signed proforma/letter of affiliation (casual staff and students)

4 CW: DATA & VERIFICATION WHAT IS REQUIRED? Data - date (first into public domain) - authors - title of event/exhibition - title/s of each creative work - publisher/venue - place of publication (city, country) - extent - role of creator and media - research contribution Evidence - Original CW exhibition catalogue/invitation, project documentation, musical score, publication front-matter & chapter/article/poem - Live performance program - Recorded/rendered program, catalogue, DVD/CD booklet, PDF of URLs - Curated/produced exhibition catalogue, festival program, PDF of URLs

9 CW HISTORY MULTIPLE OUTINGS IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN For each and every subsequent showing of an output, find the record in IRMA : create a history note, that shows: - date/s - title of exhibition/event - title of work/s (if a variation on those recorded in the original record) - venue - city, country of venue eg March Primavera Cosmos MCA Sydney Australia add documentary evidence - verification material with explicit description

10 CWs: PEER REVIEW WHAT ELSE? Creative work outputs often have related information satellites which are publicly available and constitute a form of peer review. Attach documents as ERA Supporting Docs with an explicit description. Examples include: - funding - prizes and/or awards - essays, chapters and/or articles - reviews e - interviews - TV and/or radio broadcasts - distinguished commissions - prestigious invitations

11 PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE Professional practice activities are collected in IRMA. Staff members will be able to retrieve this collected material for use in annual PM&D, reports and promotions applications. According to the Research Funding Guide produced by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK: The research carried out should bring about enhancements in knowledge and understanding in the discipline, or in related disciplinary areas. This requirement excludes research to provide content. t For example, if a filmmaker wanted to make a film about refugees, the research questions should be about the process of making the film, not about the experience of the refugees. Work that results purely from the creative or professional development of an artist, however distinguished, is unlikely to fulfil the requirements of research.
