2 dear friends, While you ve been putting together your summer plans, we have been busy preparing one of the best festivals yet, and we look forward to sharing it with you! This season, we are delighted to welcome back many of the stellar artists who ve graced us in the past, along with some exciting newcomers who are sure to become new favorites of the BCMF family. As always, our programs will offer a diverse blend of beloved classics and contemporary works for your listening pleasure. From established masterpieces by Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Dvořák to lesser-heard gems by Hugo Wolf and Ludwig Thuille and recent works by Carl Vine, Gerard Beljon, and Paul Brantley, there s something for every taste. Another exciting aspect of the 2012 season is the debut of our very own record label, BCMF Records! In addition to first releases of festival premieres, the new label will feature some performances from the summer so you can keep the BCMF spirit going all year long. You may purchase these recordings in this brochure, on our website and at all major digital and retail outlets. Although we bring you some of the biggest names in the music world, we are a small organization which would be unable to offer these exceptional performances without the loyal support of music lovers like you. 5 week 2 winds of change Thursday, August 2, 7:30 pm We welcome a full complement of winds this evening, offering a terrific mix of sounds throughout the program. Featuring a rarely-heard masterpiece by Austrian composer Ludwig Thuille a friend of Richard Strauss the program begins with Mozart s delightful work for oboe and strings. The Schnittke pays homage to Classicism and its acknowledged master with both sincerity and wit, and the Schumann Piano Quintet which rounds out the evening is a beloved masterwork of the repertoire. Musical tastes may change, but the boundless creativity of the Baroque masters is unfailingly delicious. This banquet of sound features enticing selections by Bach and Vivaldi preceded by an almost Classically-flavored appetizer cooked up by J.F. Fasch. Hungarian György Ligeti s inventive Six Bagatelles make references to Stravinsky and Bartók, and Martinů s Nonet nods to Czech folk music. Dvořák shows his mastery of lyricism in his Notturno then displays a fiery intensity in his F Minor Piano Trio, which harkens back to the composer s Bohemian roots. Austrian Hugo Wolf follows with his unique perspective on a journey in the Italian countryside, and the sublime Schubert B-flat Trio one of the greatest works in the literature provides a fitting end to a wonderful evening. Savor the atmosphere at a hip downtown café with Australian composer Carl Vine, then settle down for a nightcap with Cesar Franck, whose sensual Piano Quintet reflects an infatuation with a young mistress. What a night on the town! Boccherini s charming quintet nods to the rich classical guitar tradition of Spain, his adopted country. Shostakovich s elegiac trio is a deeply felt memorial to a friend, and embedded in Brahms s passionate sextet are musical references to great loves of his life: Clara Schumann and Agathe von Siebold, to whom he was once engaged.
