3 Winslow Concert Band and Friends Saturday 13th September pm Welcome... to our concert Winslow Concert Band and Friends. In the summer of 2007 we were asked to play to entertain the guests at the Lions Club annual tea party. Also on the bill was local singer Paul French, who suggested getting together to perform some vocal numbers with the band providing the backing, thus the seed for this concert was planted. For several years we have presented an annual concert in the winter, for the rest of the year performing at a number of public and private events around the area. Some regular supporters have been asking whether we would consider putting on another concert during the year, so I thought it would be interesting to put the two ideas together. We hope you enjoy the evening - please make use of the bar facilities at the rear of the hall and be sure to enjoy the refreshments on offer during the interval. There is no charge for the latter, but a donation to band funds will be much appreciated to allow us to invest in new music and instruments and continue to be an active organisation in the Winslow community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Friends Pam Worley, Paul French and Terry Lightfoot for joining us in this concert this evening. It has been a real pleasure to work with them. Thank you too to our audience for giving up your Saturday evening to come along and listen. Should you play a brass or woodwind instrument and be interested in joining us, we generally rehearse here at the Winslow Public Hall on Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm. 5 Terry Lightfoot first fronted a band under his own name in 1955 and made his first major concert appearance at London s Royal Festival Hall in He quickly became established as a bandleader, instrumentalist and vocalist of international status, and is one of the few jazz stars who has successfully bridged the gap between the jazz fans and the mainstream theatre-going public. Terry was involved in the traditional jazz revival of the 1950 s and a leading light in the world-wide Trad boom of the 1960 s. He has appeared at many of the top venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium, Barbican and Symphony Hall, Birmingham. In 1965 Terry and his band toured with the legendary Louis Satchmo Armstrong, and has appeared with many of the world s top jazz and blues stars saw Terry fronting the Acker Bilk Paramount Jazzband while Acker was recovering after illness, and in 2004 the band topped the bill in a V.I.P.s of Jazz tour with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and the Dutch Swing College Band. He has recorded around 30 albums, both in his own right and with his vocalist daughter Melinda who now performs regularly with her Dad s band. The British Academy of Songwriters awarded him their Gold Badge of Merit for his services to music in 2000, and in 2005 he was chosen to appear at Whitehall Palace in a star-studded line-up of British Jazz Legends in aid of Mencap, appearing with John and Jacqui Dankworth, Don Lusher, Kenny Ball, guest of honour Lord Brian Rix, (patron of Mencap) and Michael Parkinson. 6 Our Friends... Pam Worley (nee Heagren) came from a musical family and was soon attracted to jazz. Early and varied influences were Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. She started singing with her brother s band and then became the regular vocalist in Cy Laurie s club in Windmill Street. Later, Pam joined Steve Lane s band with whom she is still the featured vocalist. In the meantime she has sung with Acker Bilk, Monty Sunshine, Wild Bill Davison, Scott Hamilton, Mike Daniels, various dance and soul bands and many other jazz groups. Pam has enjoyed band tours in France, Switzerland, Norway, Germany and Czechoslovakia, and has made many recordings. She is also a talented painter, specializing in watercolours. Paul French is very much a local lad having been born and raised in Winslow. He gained a taste for singing in the church choir and with the Winslow players. It was many years before Paul decided to turn a hobby into a second career and now is to be often found in pubs and clubs singing anything from Elvis to Sinatra. Paul loves a lively audience and hopes that you will all join in as much as possible. A date for your diary... The annual winter concert will be held on Saturday 14th February 2009 at the Winslow Public Hall. In 2009 the Winslow Concert Band will mark its 15th anniversary and we plan to kick off celebrations at this Valentine s Day event. We hope you will be there to join us.
