Tango People Tango teacher Italy Filippo Avignonesi Who from known dancers made on you the greatest impact? Most my dance was affected by Horacio Godoy and Alejandra Mantinan, from them I took lessons for ten years, and with Alejandra I also worked much subsequently. Also on my understanding of a tango made strong impact Javier Rodriguez and Geraldine Rojas, and also it is a lot of other teachers. You teach worldwide, tell, what makes Russian dancers differ? Features of relationship between men and women in Russia - are closer to the South American culture, rather than to the European. Gender roles are clear here and it is easier to Russians to understand, why and about what they dance. Besides, Russian people are very disciplined and efficient, they love and respect art already since the childhood. As a result, they study quicker and better, than dancers from other countries. 2
Tango People Release 4 (4) August You perfectly dance as a follower you studied female style specially? Specially I didn t study female style. But I was lucky, as I danced and worked with one of the best women in the world. I felt, how they dance. And when took private lessons with men, I, as a rule, danced a half of a lesson for the follower to feel, how these teachers dance. And, as a result, I have received good experience in dancing of female party. Also I studied anatomy therefore it is easier to me to understand movements from the anatomic point of view. You often speak about actively role of the woman in dance but where the very edge of it? Yes, I like active partners. Activity of the woman is limited only to that it was pleasant to both. You were born in Italy and as whom you feel yourself? Too Italian, or Argentinian? The Argentinian, definitely not because I didn t live long in Argentina, though often there happened. By origin I am Italian, but in general, I am a person of the world because grew in three different cultures: Italian, German and American, and since the childhood traveled much. How you heard for the first time about a tango? How started to teach? Into a tango I was brought by friends (dragged for hair). And started to teach, because then in Europe there were not so many teachers, and people wanted to study and asked to give them lessons. If I began now, and I would have a choice, to do a tango by work or not, probably, I and didn t make it. Now in the world even there are too much teachers. Well and our traditional your wish to beginning dancers? Don t listen to those who says that the tango it is difficult. Dance it. Dance and enjoy. 5 Tang0 geography Release 4 (4) August Italy always was and remains the patroness of arts, the homeland of great artists, musicians, poets, cinematographers, the fashion center, a place of extraordinary inspiration and active creativity. Forever young Italy will take control of your dreams, will win your heart and leaves the most wonderful memoirs. Coast of the country is washed at once by several seas: Adriatic, Ionic, Tirrensky, Liguriysky and Mediterranean. Italy the mountainous country with sharp tops, gear ridges, abrupt slopes and picturesque gorges, it owns a part of the Southern and Western Alps. There is a set of lakes and the rivers and quite extensive Padansky plain. Climate of the most part of Italy Mediterranean subtropical. The average temperature of winter months fluctuates from С in the north to С in the south, and in summer months from С in the north to С in the south. All coastal areas of Italy differ in the dry and hot summer, and the greatest number of rains drops out in October-November, and also in winter months. It is considered that the best time for visit of Italy is a spring, the beginning of summer and autumn. Shops, as a rule, work all day with 9:00 till 20:00, some are open on Sundays. A lunch break usually from 13:00 till 15:30. In resort places shops often work till late evening and on days off. In Italy there are two periods of seasonal discounts and sales, in Italian sconti and saldi: from January 7 to March 1 and from July 10 to August 31. In Italy begins work the telephone hot line for tourists Easy Italia created at the initiative of the Ministry of tourism of the country. Operators of the telephone line know English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Russian and Italian languages. Tourists can receive council and the operative help in a case of bad service, for inquiry of medical care, intervention of law enforcement agencies, to them will dictate addresses of the tourist centers, will acquaint with information on museums, exhibitions, sights etc. Easy Italia phone: Works every day from 9:00 till 22:00. Surprisingly, but fact: short beeps in a tube of the Italian phone mean that the line (!) is free. Having heard short beeps (habitual for example to the Russian ear), it is not necessary to put down a reciever, and, on the contrary, it is necessary to dial number safely. It concerns not only home telephone numbers, but also machine guns on streets. Tango in Italy San-Remo Festival September
Tango People Photo Christoph Piecha Dario Viri violinist Silencio Tango Orchestra Dario, describe please your way as a musician. When you began to play and what musical instruments? I was 13th years old when I began to play violin. I m from a musician family in Italy: my father was soloist of bassoon in the symphonic orchestra in Rome, my brother plays violin professionally, and one of my sister sings in the opera choir of Rome. I grew up in a musical ambience, but it was my choice to play violin and I graduated from Conservatory in Rome as a violinist. Do any of members in your family love tango too? Dance or play it? My family knows tango only trough me, they like it but they have never danced. When did you hear about tango for the first time? How you began to play tango music? I heard tango before Also I heard solo of bandoneon and some compositions of Piazzolla, but really I didn t know about this music. Once time I played Piazzolla in the symphonic orchestra. In 2001 in Switzerland, where I live now, my good friend and musician Giovanni Barbato (played also in the same orchestra) asked me to play in a new tango orchestra. I was always interested in tango, but really I didn t know tango so deep! So our adventure with Silencio in Basel, Switzerland had begun - a young group of professional musicians from Buenos Aires, Uruguay, Cuba, Italy, USA, Germany and Swiss. Who gave the name to the orchestra and why it was called Silencio? At the beginning we thought about a good «Tanguero» name for the orchestra. At that moment I listened Gardel. He sang this historically tango «Silencio», and I proposed the name to the other musicians. They accepted my idea with enthusiasm. But the orchestra has not a relationship with this very sadly tango. 6
Tango People Release 4 (4) August How has the orchestra changed since it was created? Some of the musicians changed (Alfredo Marcucci died three years ago), other arrived, but the old are playing always : the pianist Roger, the bandoneonist Jose Luis, the bass player Winni, the singer Omar, the viola player Brian and me. How do you choose music for playing at the festivals? Do you discuss it with organizers? The pianist Roger Helou makes almost all the arrangements. My friends and I propose and transcribe some tango music for the orchestra. The organizers are happy with our repertoire, they knew us before. When we play in a Festival with milongas, we choose danceable music like Biagi, Di Sarli, D Agostino etc (we like it!), sometimes when the organizera asked us, we play one set (about 1 hour) music for listening (Piazzolla, Salgan, Troilo etc), and the people as at the concert. Later, when hall free for dancing, we change style. Have you ever argued with other musicians in orchestra about music which you need to play? We have a lot of discussions about music, style, interpretation, but at the end we always find dance music for the people. Sometimes you DJ at milongas. Do you choose for playing the same music as for playing with orchestra or another type of music? The music we play with Silencio is danceable, but for the milonga sets we play only about 3h. So we make a list of good dance music, of course in Silencio style. It is possible, when I m DJ, to put the same music like our repertoire, this is not important, the orchestra of the Epoca de Oro (Golden Ages editor s note) are amazing to dance. When I m DJ and musician at the same evening (it s good possible and very interesting) I never put the same tango. Photo Judith Schifferle 7
Tango People When you DJ at milonga do you have playlists? Or you choose music for playing during milonga? NO PLAYLIST! I look the dancers and try to put the right milonga only with memory. Which country have you already visited with orchestra? Did people met music differently? Can you describe it? We were in all cities of Europe, and in Lebanon, Armenia, Russia. We played at milongas for many people, and I found that there are no differences, music is a universal language and tango is also. What do you think attract people in tango-music? The subtle difference in the interpretation, the light changing of tempo (agogic), the dinamic (between pianissimo and fortissimo), the rhythmic, of course the very special sound. For me the tango music is like a language you should «hablar» (to speak) with instruments when you play tango. The same is not enough to know Spanish grammar to talk in the street in Buenos Aires. Which music, in your opinion, the best one for dancing? Which orchestras you prefer to play? I think the most important orchestra to dance is Carlos Di Sarli. In the beginning of our adventure with Silencio we worked hard with his amazing sound, his specific articulations, his soundly legato and staccato, his long phrases etc. Sure the rhythmic of a good D Arienzo, Troilo and his singers, early interpretation of Pugliese should be always in one tango evening. Di Sarli, D Arienzo, Troilo, Pugliese, D Agostino, Fresedo, Canaro, Donato, Laurenz, Tanturi, Demare and much other. You know history of music. Can you tell that tango music is a unique? Well, the origin of tango has different interpretations. Tango is a mix between classic interpretation, music of immigrations, folk music of the region of Rio de la Plata and black music. The specific of this music more in the instruments like bandoneon and the percussive element. More information about Silencio Tango Orchestra and about Dario Viri 8
