1 A. UPCC PROFILE The UP Concert Chorus, UPCC, or simply Korus, is the official choir of the University of the Philippines. As an internationallycompetitive performing group, Korus has perfected versatility in singing classical, folk, pop and Broadway musical genres with signature vibrant choreography. An icon of stage performance that pioneered ChoreoCapella or choreographed a capella, in the Philippines, Korus is one the Ani ng Dangal 2013 Awardees recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Ranked No. 1 in the world for Folk choral performance at the 2012 Festival Internacional de Cantonigros in Spain and the recipient of the 2012 Aliw Awards Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, Korus soars beyond its 50th year to share its unique, fun and passionate performance to the world.

2 B. S ALIW HIMIG, Isang Lakbay KORUS ( MELODIOUS MELANGE, A KORUS Tour) By J. S. Aracama S ALIW HIMIG is a conjunction of two Tagalog words: Saliw (harmony, musical accompaniment, medley, potpourri, melange) and Aliw (delight; good cheer, joyousness, liveliness) combined with Himig (tune; melody; rhythm of music; note; tone). Lakbay simply means a tour, journey or travel. The University of the Philippines Concert Chorus (U.P.C.C.) was born in 1962, during the incumbency of General Carlos P. Romulo as President of the University of the Philippines. Through its existence, the group has metamorphosed from being a simple university chorale into a musical force of national and world stature. KORUS, as it is affectionately known, is a mélange of different backgrounds, composed of select students and alumni from the different colleges of the university performing various potpourri of music ranging from Classic to the Contemporary. The U.P.C.C. has been known as the pioneer of choreographed choral performances in the Philippines since the early 70s. With current artistic director and conductor Prof. Janet Sabas Aracama, the UP Concert Chorus goes beyond the typical stand-up choir performance style through choral art form CHOR-EO- CAPELLA, "CHORus CHOREOgraphed A CAPELLA" (choral works inspired by musical theater concert style, accompanied and unaccompanied). Professor Aracama creatively blended a repertoire of Classics, Spirituals, Popular and Philippine Music with movement for this Tour On its 52nd year as cultural envoys of Filipino artistry in choral music and after 21 international tours, Korus pursues with the continuing passion uniting audiences of various cultural backgrounds through the gift of music. For the first part of the S ALIW HIMIG tour, KORUS will participate and compete for the first time in the International Krakow Choir Festival "Cracovia Cantans" (11 14 June, 2015) and the 12 th International Festival of University Choirs, "Universitas Cantat 2015", (24 27 June, 2015) in Poland. This tour shall embark at the end of May 2015 until the 1 st week of August 2015 and will also cover major cities in Europe and the USA (East Coast, Midwest and Hawaii). The second part of the tour will embark on December 2015 and cover the major cities of the West Coast of the United States of America. The U.P.C.C. continues to plant cultural seeds and friendships across the globe. Through their performances, the Korus has gone beyond Aliw, beyond just entertaining. It has been proven to be a tool for education for the choral arts performance practices through workshops and for peace and understanding, calming unstable hearts of many under unsettling situations between countries. The full U.P.C.C. program will consist of 3 parts: Kontemporarius, Katutubo, Koreokapela. Through choral music, Korus continues to develop generations of Filipino artists with the mission to serenade the world for the love of the choral arts, for the university s honor, for love of country and to God s glory. 3 C. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR/CONDUCTOR PROFILE PROFESSOR JANET JAI SABAS-ARACAMA. As a soloist with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), MPO and Las Pinas Bamboo Festival, Prof. Janet "Jai" Sabas Aracama has sung with such international conductors as Piero Gamba, Ruggero Barbieri, Julian Quirit and Oscar Yatco. On the concert platform, she has performed in Handel s Messiah, Stravinsky s Les Noces, Beethoven s Symphony No. 9, Verdi s Stabat Mater and Requiem, Rutter s Gloria, Rossini s Petite Messe Solennelle, Mahler s Symphony No. 8, Bach s St John s Passion, Bach s Magnificat, Bruckner s Te Deum and Dvorák s Stabat Mater amongst others. Opera and Broadway credits include the roles of Katisha in Gilbert and Sullivan s The Mikado, Bloody Mary in Rodgers and Hammerstein s South Pacific, Suzuki in Puccini s Madama Butterfly, Mother in Jeffrey Ching s Rendezvous in Venice as well as major roles in Gershwin s Candide and Tchaikovsky s Eugene Onegin amongst others. She is a versatile singer, not only singing opera, art songs and Broadway but crossing over to contemporary gospel, soul, jazz and Original Pilipino Music. Prof. Aracama earned her Bachelor s and Master s degree in Music at the University of the Philippines College of Music in choral conducting, voice and ethnomusicology. Her mentors were Dean Rey T. Paguio in conducting, Josie Bailen, Fides Asensio and Elmo Makil in Voice. She is now a permanent faculty member of the University of the Philippines and Chair of the Conducting Department. In November 26, 1999, she was elected and appointed by the University to be Artistic Director and Conductor of the renowned UP Concert Chorus, filling the shoes of the late Dean Rey T. Paguio. With great determination and musicianship, she has led Korus to win numerous festival awards. Under her leadership, Korus has also been on a number of international tours. She is also the vocal and choral trainer and facilitator of music workshops in the Philippines and regularly serves as an adjudicator in choral competitions. She has acted as vocal instructor/coach in numerous musical productions, including Repertory Philippines productions of Into The Woods and Fiddler On The Roof, New Voice Company s Chess and more.
