DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES PROGRAMS FOR 2016 NANCY A. NASHER AND DAVID J. HAEMISEGGER FAMILY SOLUNA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL May 16 June 5, 2016 Music, Dance, Visual Arts Combine in Dallas Arts District for Second Year of Genre-Bending Festival; Theme Explores The Power of Myth & Legend in Music and Art the latest collaborative crescendo for a city that has long been on the up. *Wallpaper Dallas, TX (November 17, 2015) The Dallas Symphony Orchestra today announces selected programming for the second annual Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival. The 2016 festival will be held in locations in the Dallas Arts District and beyond from May 16 through June 5, Anchored by performances by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, SOLUNA will again feature cross-disciplinary presentations, world premiere performances and eclectic artistic combinations. The theme for the 2016 festival is Myth & Legend. The stories we share fact and fantasy, ancient tale and urban legend are the threads that sew together our sense of time and place, relevance and shared humanity. Cutting-edge collaborations across classical music, dance, visual and performance art during SOLUNA explore, and are inspired by, these compelling stories. Composers and artists through the ages have dipped into this well of history and inspiration to create new works, which keep these stories relevant and alive, said Jaap van Zweden, Dallas

Symphony Orchestra Music Director. SOLUNA will likewise tap into this well, with concerts and exhibitions to celebrate traditions and open new pathways. Tickets for most SOLUNA events will be available to the general public on November 25, Ticket purchase and information is available at Soluna Bridges The Gap Between Classical Music And Contemporary Culture Forbes.com The SOLUNA Opening Event on Tuesday, May 17 is the world premiere of Rules Of The Game. A one-night-only event, Rules Of The Game is a multidisciplinary work for eight dancers and represents the largest collaboration between Jonah Bokaer (choreography) and Daniel Arsham (scenography) and their first partnership with Pharrell Williams (score), collectively. The music composed by pop star and multi-grammy Award-winner Williams represents his first composition for live dance and theater. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra will perform live at the premiere, following a three-part creation residency in Dallas for the artists which has included the casting of one local dancer. This event is a co-presentation of the Dallas Symphony and AT&T Performing Arts Center. This cross-disciplinary project gets to the heart of SOLUNA s mission providing artists and musicians with new platforms for expression and cooperation, while bringing to Dallas memorable performances and an unforgettable experience, said Dallas Symphony President and CEO Jonathan Martin. The Dallas Symphony is happy to again partner with the AT&T Performing Arts Center to present a unique, never-before-seen collaboration as a showpiece of SOLUNA. Creating a new piece incorporating the Dallas Symphony is an exciting opportunity for the three of us, said artist Daniel Arsham. Rules Of The Game will allow us to explore using a new canvas of expression, giving us the freedom to navigate new avenues to challenge, entertain and inspire. As a choreographer, I constantly surround myself with collaborators from many different fields. Each production is in a way an artistic and deeply human adventure, said choreographer Jonah Bokaer. This creation involving Daniel Arsham and Pharrell Williams is inspiring for me in the sense that it makes all of us push our boundaries further. Tickets for Rules Of The Game will be available beginning on November 25. Tickets range from $19-$129 and are available at Smart programming thoughtfully curated and beautifully performed

D Magazine Dallas Symphony Orchestra performances anchor each SOLUNA weekend. On May 20 & 21, Assistant Conductor Karina Canellakis leads ReMix: Orchestral Myth & Legend. Pianist Anne- Marie McDermott joins the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in a program of evocative and colorful orchestral works to ignite the imagination and transport listeners to faraway lands. On May 27 & 28, Music Director Jaap van Zweden conducts the orchestra in performances of Mahler s youthful work, Das klagende Lied. Called a fairy-tale for chorus, soloists and orchestra by the composer, the work tells the tale of two sibling knights who fight for the hand of the imperious Queen. The 175-member Dallas Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Joshua Habermann, joins the orchestra. Soloists include Susanna Phillips, soprano; Michelle DeYoung, mezzo-soprano; and Clifton Forbis, tenor. This rarely-performed work was last presented by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in This early masterwork, first composed when Mahler was just 20 years old, confirms his genius as a composer and as a generator of new ideas, said Music Director van Zweden. It will be a special pleasure for me to present this unique piece to our SOLUNA audiences. Rounding out the program is Copland s Clarinet Concerto, performed by DSO Principal Clarinet Gregory Raden. Copland wrote the piece for legendary clarinet player Benny Goodman, and jazz-influenced themes abound in this cornerstone of the clarinet repertoire. On June 3, 4 & 5, the mighty Lay Family Concert Organ takes center stage in performances of Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3, Organ Symphony (Stefan Engels, organ). A beautifully wrought dialogue between the organ and strings, Saint-Saëns said of Symphony No. 3, I gave everything to it I was able to give. Jaap van Zweden conducts the concert which also features DSO Artistin-Residence Conrad Tao s world premiere orchestral work Alice inspired by the fantasy world of Lewis Carroll. Pianist Louis Lortie joins the performance as soloist in Saint- Saëns s Piano Concerto No. 5, Egyptian. A cerebral celebration of music and art, with a bit of Coachella mixed in Paper City Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians will curate a series of chamber music performances that explore the theme of Myth & Legend. SOLUNA begins on May 16 at the Meyerson Symphony Center with the return of A Musician s View, chamber music performed with the audience on the stage and near the musicians. This intimate concert during SOLUNA 2015 was described as a concert by friends, for friends by The Dallas Morning News.

Anne-Marie McDermott, Artistic Director of the Bravo! Vail Music Festival and renowned soloist and chamber musician, joins DSO Concertmaster Alexander Kerr and further Dallas Symphony musicians for an evening dedicated to a legend of the violin world, Eugène Ysaÿe. Ysaÿe ( ) was regarded as the King of the Violin, a player, composer and teacher who influenced generations of classical musicians. Ernest Chausson s Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet (originally performed by Ysaÿe) is the cornerstone of this chamber concert at Dallas City Performance Hall on May 22. Dallas Symphony Orchestra Artist-in-Residence Conrad Tao makes an appearance as piano soloist on May 31. He will bring his dazzling virtuosity and adventurous musical programming to music of Frederic Rzewski and Franz Schubert in a Dallas Contemporary in a recital, which, in Conrad Tao s words, will deconstruct mythologies of the concert format and performance. Also in solo performance is organist Todd Wilson. Wilson is head of the Organ Department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and Curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall in Cleveland, OH. His program on the Lay Family Concert Organ on May 22 will reflect on the enduring influence of the greatest of all organists, Johann Sebastian Bach. This will include pieces by Bach, Widor, Reger and tributes to iconic organists Duruflé, Alain and Texas organist Gerre Hancock...a creative gathering to bring the rest of the world calling. Departures Magazine In addition to musical programming, presenting visual art is a key to SOLUNA. Guided by its mission to showcase the Dallas Symphony Orchestra alongside performances and installations by a commissioned group of international visual artists, the 2016 program will again blur boundaries between traditional genres and disciplines. Select artists from the 2015 inaugural SOLUNA Festival included St. Vincent, Alex Prager, Yael Bartana, Pipilotti Rist, Kevin Beasley and Monte Laster, among others. Collaborating visual arts organizations include the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center and Dallas Contemporary. A complete list of 2016 visual artists will be announced in January. Throughout history artists have given visual form to the myths and legends that bind all humankind, said Director of SOLUNA Festival Development Anna-Sophia van Zweden. Exciting collaborations with some of Dallas s leading art institutions bring a contemporary perspective to this ancient practice, and will result in exciting new platforms to combine art, music, video, performance and experimental ideas into exciting showcases of unexpected expression.

Is This A Great Festival Or What? SOLUNA will partner with local arts organizations to bring international artistic talent to Dallas and will also engage the local community in art and music. KERA Key to the community mission is a two-evening performance of a community-led presentation of Britten s Noye s Fludde (Noah s Flood) on May 31 and June 1. The oneact opera was written by Britten to be performed by professional and amateur musicians, especially children, and it tells the tale of Noah and the great flood. Karina Canellakis will lead these performances which will include soloists and singers of the Children s Chorus of Greater Dallas, musicians of the Young Strings program and further soloists, dancers and singers from across the DFW Metroplex. Performances will take place at the historic Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Music Director Jaap van Zweden returns to the podium on May 29 at Klyde Warren Park for Our Heroes. The concert will honor Dallas s veterans and first responders with a program of patriotic favorites and beloved classics. It is an honor to have the opportunity to say thank you to all those who serve this great nation and to thank all of those in the City of Dallas, said Music Director van Zweden. Music and the Brain, a partnership between the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and UT Southwestern Medical Center, returns in 2016 on May 21 with world-renowned doctors who will present the newest science on the brain s role in creativity and how music can heal the brain. In 2015, this sold-out, day-long seminar explored how the brain makes music and how music is processed was presented. Dallas Black Dance Theatre returns as a SOLUNA partner with its Spring Celebration concerts on May The performances feature Bruce Wood s RED, set to the music of Philip Glass, and a stunningly beautiful new work by DBDT II Director, Nycole Ray. Dancers from Sungkyunkwan University in Korea will perform choreography by Bridget L. Moore. Dallas s Orchestra of New Spain joins SOLUNA as a new partner in The ensemble under the artistic direction of Grover Wilkins 3d, is steeped in the performance of early music, with a specialty in Spanish and American Hispanic music. The performance during SOLUNA on May 26 is entitled Cervantes and Shakespeare The Break from Myth and

Legend. The 400th anniversary of the deaths of the great writers Cervantes and Shakespeare provides an opportunity to celebrate their lasting influences in semi-staged performances of dance and theatrical music by Purcell, Boismortier and Telemann, highlighting the humor and genius of these giants. The SOLUNA festival is a great catalyst for Dallas musically, artistically and commercially, said Jonathan Martin, Dallas Symphony Orchestra President & CEO. People familiar with the Dallas Arts District and its anchor museums and arts organizations will discover new experiences and interactions, while exciting new cross-genre productions such as Rules of the Game will entice entirely new audiences to discover everything the arts in Dallas has to offer. SOLUNA connects the arts in Dallas to our community and to the world. We look forward to welcoming everyone to SOLUNA in May and June About The Nancy A. Nasher and David J.
