From our Artistic Director It s a thrill to be presenting NUMUS season to Kitchener-Waterloo, one of the most dynamic communities in the country! This year we really have something for everyone. We continue to build on our strengths, solidifying our place as an integral part of the local and national contemporary music scene. We offer a good balance between emerging and established artists, this year putting more resources into our Emerging Curator and Emerging Improviser initiatives; making us the only arts organization in Canada offering these types of opportunities Consider supporting NUMUS this year by purchasing a ticket or subscription and by recommending us to a friend. Thank you for taking an interest in contemporary music in your community. I hope to see you at our many great events this season! Kathryn Ladano From our General Manager I became the GM of NUMUS back in January of Since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting many great people performers, composers, artists, NUMUS supporters, volunteers and have made several friends along the way. At each concert, I enjoy seeing familiar faces, meeting new people and, of course, discovering new music. I also like what goes into making each concert a success, from approaching local businesses for sponsorship and putting up posters around town, to setting up on the day of the concert and helping out at the box office. It's been fantastic working with Kathryn, and her amazing work as Artistic Director is one of the reasons I became interested in NUMUS. Each season under her direction has been a carefully planned experience, with a focus on new and emerging artists. This season is going to be incredible, and I look forward to being a part of it. FEATUring justin WALTEr, electronics Celebrating the release of his new album, All This I Do For Glory, Colin Stetson comes to NUMUS for the first time. His astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Electronic artist Justin Walter opens the show. 4 Photo: Peter Gannushkin
Sarah Thawer Emerging Soloists MIX October 6, 2017 at 8pm Walper Hotel Oak Room Lobby 20 Queen St. S., Kitchener Tickets $15, $10 senior or arts worker, $5 student An unstoppable force on the national music scene, emerging artist and drummer, Sarah Thawer, will present a program featuring her own compositions and improvisations incorporating North and South Indian solkattu/bols (speaking rhythm) into modern music. Thawer also experiments with electronics, and improvisation in different contexts, such as jazz, hiphop, and music from around the world. Photo: Lisa MacIntosh 5
Sonoluminescence Trio MAIN October 20, 2017 at 8pm First United Church 16 William St. W., Waterloo Tickets $30, $20 senior or arts worker, $10 student Featuring Jesse STEWArt, David Mott, and William Parker Sonoluminescence Trio consists of baritone saxophonist David Mott, NYC bassist and multi-instrumentalist William Parker, and percussionist Jesse Stewart. The term sonoluminescence refers to a process through which light is produced by sound waves passing through liquid. Converting sound into light is an apt metaphor for the shared aims of the band s members. 6 Artwork: Jeff Schlanger

Lina Allemano's Titanium Riot MIX December 1, 2017 at 8pm KW Art Gallery 101 Queen St. N., Kitchener Tickets $15, $10 senior or arts worker, $5 student "Imaginative... surreal... oddly compelling" [Wholenote Magazine]. Titanium Riot is an accidentally-psychedelic improvising powerhouse with a unique electric-acoustic aesthetic, combining an unusual instrumentation of Allemano on acoustic trumpet (with acoustic sound manipulation), Ryan Driver on analog synth, Rob Clutton on electric bass, and Nick Fraser on drums. 8 Photo: Fedge
Andrew Downing's Otterville: Live Soundtrack to The Great Gabbo MAIN February 16, 2018 at 8pm KW Little Theatre 9 Princess St. E., Waterloo Tickets $30, $20 senior or arts worker, $10 student Andrew Downing's Otterville plays a live score for the not-so-silent musical film, The Great Gabbo. Last year s curator concert, titled, NUMUS plugged in, featured new music for synthesizers. What will this year bring? Photo: Mike Borkovic 11
For Bass Clarinet and Industrial Orchestra MAIN April 14, 2018 at 8pm The Button Factory 25 Regina St. S., Waterloo Tickets $30, $20 senior or arts worker, $10 student A NUMUS milestone! Composer (and former NUMUS artistic director) Glenn Buhr has created a monumental new concerto for bass clarinetist (and current NUMUS artistic director) Kathryn Ladano, featuring an array of sound-inspired visual art projections by Cevie Dubesky. The new composition is intense and various: an uninterrupted full-evening work consisting of seven composed movements, connected by controlled improvisations that are themed around the theory of evolution. The 7-piece industrial orchestra features Glenn Buhr, Jeremy Bell, Peter Lutek, Victor Bateman, Brandon Valdivia, Scott Good, and Mike Anderson. 12 Photos (clockwise from top left): Mike Borkovic; James Clemens-Seely; Bill Braden; Peter Lutek; Gee Wong; Jeremy Benning, Martin LePage; Gee Wong
Lori Freedman & Nicolas Caloia MIX April 27, 2018 at 8pm Walper Hotel Oak Room Lobby 20 Queen St. S., Kitchener Tickets $15, $10 senior or arts worker, $5 student Staples of the Montreal new music and free improv scenes, bass clarinetist Lori Freedman and bassist Nicolas Caloia join forces to create a night of unforgettable music. The goal is a performance that erases the lines between improvised and composed, pop and avant-garde, good and bad. This concert will also feature the winner of our 5th annual NUMUS Emerging Improviser Contest. Photo: Jacques Gravel 13
