3 Artist Biographies Cornell University Steel Band ~ The first Cornell Steel Band was formed in the fall semester of There are currently two steel bands: "The Cornell Steel Band" and the "Boogie Band," both under the direction of James Armstrong. Each group's repertoire ranges from traditional island folk tunes to panorama style compositions and beyond. Instrumentation includes the standard steel pan orchestra and a complete "engine room." Several performances are given both on and off campus during the academic year. The Cornell Steel Bands sustain a reputation of excellence while being two of the most exciting performance groups on campus and throughout the Finger Lakes region. Binghamton High School Percussion Program ~ Under the direction of BHS Director of Bands, Joel Smales, the Percussion Ensemble is a strong force in the musical life of the Rod Serling School at Binghamton High School and throughout the Southern Tier and beyond. Performing traditional percussion ensemble, marimba band and steel drum music, the ensemble has consistently received rave reviews and top honors at festivals and events. The Steel Drum Band was formed in 1999 with only a few steel pans and several students. Since then, the steel band has quadrupled in size. The Percussion Ensemble and Steel Drum Band have performed for the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, Bands of America National Percussion Festival, Music Educators National Conference, NYS Fair, the NYS School Boards Association Annual Convention, NYSSMA Winter Conference, NYS PAS Days of Percussion, NYS Youth Bureau's Conference, NYC's Washington Square Park, World Physics Conference, First Night International, and on television. They have twice been invited to perform a concert tour of China and have performed for NYS Days of Percussion. The Ensemble has performed with Liam Teague, Billy Ward, Gordon Stout, Ithaca College Steel Band, Cornell University Steel Band, and with the Binghamton Community Orchestra and for Steve Smith. Students in grades 9-12 may participate in the ensemble. A Steel Band CD entitled JUICE BLENDERS featuring all original music written by members of the steel band and Joel Smales was released in 2003 and their second CD, BAGGAGE CLAIM was released in Dec CD's are available for $13 each or 2 for $20. Check them out on the Web at The Marassa Duo brings together a wide variety of percussion styles and musical genres into a concise and unified whole. The group s original programming provides a unique chamber setting that includes elements of traditional concert music, world music, mallet percussion, contemporary classical and jazz. The duo combines the talents of James Armstrong, a performer specializing in Afro-Cuban and West African folkloric music and Nicholas Papador, a performer specializing in marimba as well as contemporary and orchestral concert music. The result is a groundbreaking and exciting chamber music that opens new musical worlds to its audiences. The duo takes its name from the Marassa Twins, divine twins of the Haitian Voudon tradition who speak to us of twin souls that find each other lifetime after lifetime to interact as their karma dictates. Also exemplifying the belief of opposition and duality within the mortal world, the Marassa Twins constitute one of the more perplexing entities of the Haitian religion, beginning with the point that there are sometimes three of them. As anthropologist Maya Deren wrote, "In Voudon, one and one make three." The Marassa are immensely powerful and are often interpreted as the affirmation of cosmic unity." Nicholas Papador is currently a special, sessional instructor of percussion at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. He completed the Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern University as well as a master's degree at Indiana University where his efforts earned him the university's coveted Performer's Certificate. As a soloist, percussionist, and timpanist, he has performed in Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Canada, and throughout the United States. His most recent orchestral appointment was as principal percussionist/ assistant timpanist with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. His regular orchestral appearances with regional orchestras have led to recordings on the Ludwig/Elf and RIAX labels. As a chamber and freelance musician, Papador tours and performs with the Richard Grimes Collective, Marassa Duo, Paso Fino, and he appeared with Ensemble X during the 2005 Light in Winter Festival. He was also a founding member of both the High Street Percussion Ensemble and the Tonus Percussion Group. His scores and arrangements are published by Warner Brothers Music, Alfred/Studio 4 Music, House Panther Press, and Matrix Publishing. James Armstrong is currently the Director of Percussion Ensembles at Cornell University. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central Michigan University and a Master of Music Performance from Bowling Green State University. He is a specialist in Haitian, Cuban, and West African folkloric drumming, and has done extensive field research and performance of this music throughout the United States and abroad. He has recorded and toured with the Robert Hohner Percussion Ensemble, Smallstone artists Five Horse Johnson, I-Town recording artist Paso Fino, Rising Sign (9-piece salsa band), PIONEROS del RITMO (latin jazz sextet), and many others. Mr. Armstrong is a Latin Percussion, Yamaha, Sabian, and Vic Firth artist, is the author of Vodou Drumset: Traditional Afro-Haitian Rhythms Applied to Drumset (Carl Fischer Publications), founder and president of House Panther Press, and is published through Drop6 Media. 4 5

4 Artist Biographies "Bobby Sanabria is equally adept at the swinging big band sounds of drummers Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson along with another boyhood hero, fusion pioneer Billy Cobham." - Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times Bobby Sanabria - drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, recording artist, producer and educator -has performed with a veritable Who's Who in the world of jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed ensemble, Ascensión. His diverse recording and performing experience includes work with such legendary figures as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paquito D'Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo Santamaría, Chico O'Farrill, Henry Threadgill, and Mario Bauzá. Bobby, the son of Puerto Rican parents, was born and raised in the "Fort Apache" section of New York City's South Bronx. Inspired and encouraged by Maestro Tito Puente, another fellow New York-born Puerto Rican, Bobby "got serious" and attended Boston's Berklee College of Music from 1975 to 1979, obtaining a Bachelor of Music degree. He received its prestigious Faculty Association Award for his work as an instrumentalist. Since his graduation, Bobby has become a leader in the Afro-Cuban and jazz fields as both drummer and percussionist, and is recognized as one of the most articulate scholars of la tradición. He has been featured on numerous Grammy-nominated albums, including The Mambo Kings and other movie soundtracks, and numerous television and radio work. His most critically praised work has been with the famed Mario Bauzá and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. With them he recorded three Grammy-nominated CDs, considered to be the definitive works of the Afro-Cuban big-band jazz tradition. Mr. Sanabria was also featured with the Mario Bauzá orchestra in two PBS documentaries about Bauzá and an appearance on the Bill Cosby show. He appeared prominently in a PBS documentary on the life of Mongo Santamaria and on camera in the CBS television movie Rivkin: Bounty Hunter. In 1993 Mr. Sanabria and Ascensión released NYC Aché! on Flying Fish Records (now available on Rounder Records). It received worldwide acclaim and garnered four and half stars in Down Beat magazine, as well as receiving a nomination for Best Record of the Year by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors (NAIRD). In June 2000 Bobby released Afro-Cuban Dream... Live & In Clave!!! on the Arabesque label. Recorded live at Birdland in New York City, it features Bobby powering a big band of twenty all-stars. Critically acclaimed worldwide, it has been hailed by both the jazz and Latin music cognoscenti as a masterpiece, and was nominated for a mainstream Grammy as the Best Latin Jazz Album of Afro-Cuban Dream...Live & In Clave!!! was also nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association 2001 Award for the Best Afro-Cuban Jazz Album of the Year. His latest recording, Quarteto Aché!, on the ZOHO label, documents Bobby's virtuosity in a small group setting and was hailed a "classic" by Modern Drummer magazine and critically acclaimed by the New York Times. It was also nominated for Best Latin Jazz recording of 2003 by the Jazz Journalists Association. Mr. Sanabria has been the recipient of many awards, including an NEA grant as a jazz performer, various Meet the Composer awards, and the INTAR Off-Broadway Composer award. Most recently he has received the Mid-Atlantic Foundation Arts Connect Grant for three successive years. In 2003 he was presented with an "Outstanding Achievement Award" by Ivan Acosta, head of Latin Jazz USA, in recognition of Bobby's extraordinary creative contribution to Latin jazz. He also received a second Grammy nomination in 2003 for, 50 Years of Mambo - A Tribute to Damaso Perez Prado. Mr. Sanabria coproduced the nationally broadcast documentary, The Palladium - Where Mambo Was King, for the BRAVO network which received the Best Documentary award for cable networks in Mr. Sanabria was recently voted "Best Percussionist of the Year" for 2005 by the readers of DRUM! Magazine, a worldwide publication devoted to drums and percussion. He is currently working on another documentary as Associate Producer in conjunction with City Lore in NYC entitled, From Mambo to Hip Hop Music and Survival in the South Bronx, scheduled to be broadcast on PBS in In addition to being Chair of the International Association of Jazz Education's (IAJE) Afro-Cuban Jazz Resource Team, Mr. Sanabria is rounding out his 12th year as an Associate Professor at the New School University's Jazz & Contemporary Music Program and has also been Professor at Manhattan School of Music since He is a member of NARAS, LARAS, AF of M, BMI, SAG and the Universal Jazz Coalition. The 2006 Winter Drumline proudly presents a show titled The Rock and Roll of Billy Joel. For over 30 years Billy Joel has explored a variety of musical styles, including jazz, blues, R&B, and classical to name just a few. Considering Billy Joel s ties to Central New York, including his recent monetary donation to Syracuse University s school of music, numerous local performances over the years, and his upcoming dates as rocker and commencement speaker in the Dome, we thought it appropriate to honor Mr. Joel s rock and roll. Our show is chronological in scope, including music from the following albums: 6 7 Turnstiles -from 1976 Glass Houses -from 1980 The Nylon Curtain -from 1982 Storm Front -from 1989 The B-Unit is directed by Casey Vanderstouw, with Erica Smithson (pit), Karen Seamans (guard) and Nick Farrell (drill design/marching). Music writers include Nick Barata, Erica Smithson, Nick Farrell, Seth Nicoletti, and Casey Vanderstouw. We would like to thank the Marching Band Director, Melissa Bushee for all of her support throughout the season. Thanks also to Image Graphics Company located on Erie Blvd. In addition, many thank to all the parents who have dedicated their time and effort to support their kids in this amazing activity.

5 Artist Biographies The OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble is the defending New York State Percussion Circuit: College Division Champion! The Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble is a group of area all-stars. It includes members from OCC and area High Schools. We would like to thank the following people for making today s performance happen: the JE pit and the JE Band Boosters; the Central Square pit; the OCC administration; and our parents. Throughout this season, we have been exploring a variety of show concepts. We started with We are the children of the Earth and explored the circle of life. Our second show: Three Songs We Like, was homage to the number 3. After all, it is a magic number. This was followed by Garr! A Pirate s Life for Me! where, of course, there were parrots, planks, and eye patches aplenty a real treasure chest of pirate fun. Finally, we went geological with - Metallurgy The Rock Show! Where, we explored the tonal possibilities of rocks and metals and their communicative properties Rockin! Today, we offer you, the audience, a little taste of the Pirate show and the entire Three show. PIRATE SHOW: GAR!! A Pirate s Life for Me Ahoy there, shipmates! There are parrots, planks, and eye patches aplenty in this treasure chest of pirate fun. Today, you sail the seven seas in search of riches and adventure, but watch out for Captain Hook and Long John Silver, who are up to their usual skullduggery... It s a Pirate s Life for Me! And now, sit back, relax, hoist the Jolly Roger, and enjoy the OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble! THREE SHOW: Three Songs We Like This year s staff is Jason Schirripa, Peter Kielar, Ashley Trudell, Ben Fox, Erik Lutters, Jennifer Vacanti and Rob Bridge. Design consultants include Gabrielle Virag, Brian Piaschyk, and Josh Rosato. Choreography provided by Seth Nicoletti and Josh A Hearn. The Department of transportation includes Briana Steber, Sheree Galek, and Mike Elliott. The collector of colored-coifs is Ashley Trudell. The Minister of crescendos is Kari Kohanski. The ministry of disinformation and denial is headed up by Jason Schirppa (that s alleged of course.) The committee for tone-density includes: Ashley Trudell, Peter Kielar (who IS cooler than you,) and Paula (who apparently has no last name.) All aspects of metallurgy and related sciences have been vetted by Sheree Galek. The undersecretaryfor-understatement is Stephanie Starratt. And, of course, Stephanie would be lost without the help of understatement specialists Mike Kearney and Gabrielle Virag. Special thanks to Dean and Tyszko for their groundbreaking work debunking and disproving Meatloaf s 2/3 s theory. All sudden impacts are handled by Buschbascher, Downie, and friends. We invite you to join us in reading the soon to be published educational self-help manual: Playing Higher Than Your Neighbor It s Not That Hard by Mike Elliott and Mickey Downie. You may remember them as the team that penned: Silent But Deadly My Visit To Taco Bell. But seriously folks: we re here for you. So: Push button Receive Bacon. Nice talk see ya out there. Don t forget to wash your Granpa! And, as always: we beg you to remember that Latin Percussion and driving don t mix! And now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the OCC Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble! Robert Sanderl is native of upstate New York, where at a young age he found a love for percussion and music. Receiving his first drum set at age 4, Rob quickly found a passion for playing that was aided by the support of his parents. As a member of all the available school ensembles, Rob excelled, always striving for excellence in all his endeavors. It was during his early high school years that he realized music was to be his life long passion. In the fall of 1996, Rob entered the Crane School of Music under the instruction of Jim Petercsak as a music education major. While beginning his undergraduate studies, he also became caption head and arranger of his high school drumline, helping to lead them to their 4th state championship. Rob would continue to write and instruct the program over the next few years while completing his studies at Crane. While at school Rob worked diligently, becoming principle percussionist in the schools leading ensembles, and holding these positions for five consecutive semesters. During his time in Crane, he gave many recitals, performed with numerous faculty and professional groups, conducted one of the schools percussion ensembles, and performed under the guidance of famed composers such as George Crumb. In May of 2000, Rob graduated with high honors from Crane, receiving his Bachelors Degree in Music Education with a Performers Certificate. During this time, Rob continued his passion for marching percussion, performing three years with the Syracuse Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corps, winning one championship, and two top four appearances in the individual snare drum competition. During the summer of 1999, Rob would live out a long time dream by touring with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps as a snare drummer. In the fall of 2000, Rob entered the Thornton School of Music at USC as a graduate student in percussion performance. While attending USC, Rob was the assistant percussion instructor for the famed Trojan Band. Following the fall semester, Rob returned to New York to continue his graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. While at Eastman, Rob had the opportunity to perform with many of the schools groups, conducted one of the percussion ensembles, and served as a departmental assistant to professor John Beck. Rob was also a member of the Musica Nova Ensemble, which gave the North American premier of John Zorn s Rituals in New York City. During the summer of 2001, Rob had the opportunity to return to the Madison Scouts, this time as a staff member teaching the snare section. In the spring of 2002, Rob graduated from Eastman with his Masters Degree in Percussion Performance. In his six years of school, he had the opportunity to perform for the likes of George Crumb, John Zorn, William Cahn, and the Nexus Percussion Group. Following his studies, Rob began teaching music in New York s Hudson Valley region. Rob became the percussion director and arranger for the Arlington Admiral Marching Band, writing two original shows, and bringing two Musical Arts Conference championships, a semi-final placement at BOA Grand Nationals, and the bands first New York State Field Band Conference championship. Rob is also a busy performer, playing with numerous orchestras as a member and a soloist, a freelance drum set player, and performing solo recitals at various schools and universities. Rob has had the privilege to study with James Petercsak, John Beck, John Riley, Erik Forrester, Robert Bridge, Ernie Musquiz, John Pratt, and Nick Attanasio. 8 9
