5 Lesson one TOPIC: Note and Rest Value Review CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: Students will: read correctly, familiar and unfamiliar music that contains whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes, and their corresponding rests in 4/4 time MATERIALS: Instructional Card 1, Note and Rest Value Review Sheet (p.4) Note Tree (p.5) Rest Tree (p.6) Note Chart (p.7) Rest Chart (p.9) Musical Worksheet (p.11) SUGGESTED LESSON SEQUENCE: 1. Distribute a copy of the Note/Rest Value Review Sheet (p.4), to each student. 2. Orally review the values of the whole-note, half-note, quarter-note, eighth-note, and sixteenth-note, as well as the values of their rests. 3. Question the students about the relationship that exists between notes. (e.g. How many half-notes equal the value of one whole-note? etc.) 4. Distribute a copy of the Note Tree (p.5), to each student. 5. Explain to the students that this chart shows the relationship that exists between each of the aforementioned notes. (i.e. The value of one whole-note is equal to the value of two half-notes, etc.) 6. Distribute a copy of the Rest Tree (p.6), to each student. 2

6 Lesson one 7. Question the students about the relationship that exists between rests. (e.g. How many quarter-rests equal the value of one whole-rest? etc.) 8. Explain to the students that this chart shows the relationship that exists between each of the aforementioned rests. (i.e. The value of one whole-rest is equal to the value of two half-rests, etc.) 9. Give the students an opportunity to review these sheets on their own. 10. Distribute a copy of the Note Chart (p.7), to each student. 11. Have the students complete the worksheet by filling in the correct names and values for each note. 12. Distribute a copy of the Rest Chart (p.9), to each student. 13. Have the students complete the worksheet by filling in the correct names and values for each rest. 14. Distribute a copy of the Musical Worksheet (p.11), to each student. Have the students complete the sheet by naming the notes, and applying their knowledge of note and rest values to determine the number of beats per measure. (The first part of the worksheet is a review of the note names on the treble staff. If students are experiencing difficulty with this section, review Grade 4B, Lesson 2. For quick reference, see "treble staff" in the Glossary.) N.B. Remind the students that when eighth-notes and sixteenth-notes appear in groups, they are written as follows: ee = q q and xx = q q EVALUATION STRATEGIES: Assess the Note Chart.
