4 Eligibility RULES OF THE FESTIVAL Registration (a) The Festival is open to all amateurs. For purposes of these competitions, an amateur shall be defined as a person whose principal means of livelihood is obtained from non-musical work. This rule will not apply to non-competitive classes. (b) To qualify where an age limit is set, the age should be as of the end of December previous to the date of the Festival. (c) To qualify for a class in which a grade level is set, the competitor must not perform below the grade he or she was studying as of the end of December previous to the date of the Festival. (a) Fees Solos $3.00 Up to and including ages 10 $ years inclusive $ years and up $5.00 Adults Grade Levels $3.00 Intro to Grade 2 $4.00 Grades 3-6 $5.00 Grades 7-up Duets, (fees per student) $3.00 Up to and including age 10 $ years inclusive $ years and up $5.00 Adults When a teacher, parent or older student plays as part of the duet, only the student pays the entry fee. Trios, Quartets and Double Trios, Choruses, Bands and Church Choirs $10.00 per group (b) Entries for Duets, Trios and small ensembles (8 participants or less), must include the names of all participants on one entry form. (c) Make cheques payable to the Temiskaming Festival of Music, (d) Contestants may only compete in one age limit solo and any one open or special event class per discipline (e.g. violin, piano) within that age category. In addition, contestants may only compete once in each class. Clarification of this rule is as follows: For example, a student may compete in: One class only between 2101 and 2106 inclusively. One class only between 2201 and 2204 inclusively. One class only between 2211 and 2216 inclusively. One class only between 2301 and 2304 inclusively. (e) All entries must be received (i) by mail at the address provided, (ii) at the drop-off locations indicated or (iii) in person at registration night, by February 19th. Absolutely no late entries will be accepted. (f) Contestants are requested to notify the Secretary at least one day before their scheduled performance, if they are unable to perform. Page 4

5 Solos (a) Two marks will be deducted for piano or vocal solos not memorized. (b) In open Piano Solos, Sonatinas, Bach, etc., contestants may not play the piece they played the previous year. (c) In Vocal Categories, a chosen piece may be transposed to suit the caliber of a contestant s voice. (d) Costumes, actions and staging are to be reserved for Broadway/Live Musical and/or Popular/ Decade categories ONLY. (e) Contestants up to Grade 6 should perform ALL repeats in the composition. Duets Accompanist Instrumental duets need not be memorized. (a) All Contestants shall provide their own accompanist. If unable to do so, please contact any committee member no later than March 1, 2013, for possible suggestions for competitive classes only. NO recorded accompaniments will be allowed. (b) The accompanist must play the accompaniment for vocal or instrumental numbers as written, when available. Instrumental Combos Choirs (a) An Instrumental combination means no less than three (3) and no more than eight (8) participants. (b) In Instrumental Classes, repeats are to be omitted, unless otherwise specified. (a) Classroom Choirs: All students normally on the classroom roll are expected to be included. It is not necessary that the classroom teacher conduct the choir. (b) All elementary school classes will be non-competitive. (c) Adult choirs are to be vocal ensembles consisting of at least fifteen (15) voices singing no less than three parts - SAB/SATB. (d) In the Rose Bowl competition, entrants must also have competed in at least one of the following classes: 4911, 4912, 4921 or Each entrant will perform 3 pieces, other than ones chosen for other classes. At least one of the three pieces shall be unaccompanied. Policy on Photocopies (a) For an piece, an original copy of the music must be available for the Adjudicator. (b) For music chosen by the Music Festival committee, an original copy of the music will be supplied by the Festival. Absolutely no photocopies will be accepted unless music is out of print. Downloading from the Internet Students downloading music from the Internet must furnish proof that the appropriate license fees have been paid, have legal authorization from the publisher or provide proof of public domain. Most sites provide a copy of the license and/or a payment receipt. Loose sheets of music should be provided in a thin binder with pages numbered for the adjudicators use. Students should work with their teacher to ensure the appropriate license has been acquired. Page 5

6 Class Sizes Conductors Trophies Awards (a) The committee reserves the right to subdivide any classes or make any changes necessary or desirable. (a) Conductors of choruses or orchestras may be either professional or amateur. (a) All shields and trophies for annual competition are the property of the Temiskaming Festival of Music and may be held by the winners until ONE MONTH before the next Festival, at which time they must be returned to Source for Sports, in New Liskeard. (b) The Festival Committee will pay for engraving the date and name of winners on cups and trophies, but not for additional wording. (c) If a contestant does not receive a mark of 80 or higher for first place, neither a trophy nor a cash award will be given. (a) Any cheques presented as awards that are not cashed after six months will be considered NULL and VOID and will not be replaced. Videos Camcorders and Flash Cameras (a) Absolutely no flash photography is allowed during a performance. (b) Video recording of a performance must focus only on the performing artist, with permission. (c) There will be absolutely no recording (either video or voice) of the adjudicator or any adjudication. Practicing and Preparing (a) To ensure fairness for everyone, no performer or teacher shall be allowed to use the hall or the piano to practice prior to the Festival. [To help students become accustomed to performing in larger venues, teachers may wish to approach local schools or churches to arrange for practice time.] (b) To ensure fairness, no accompanist shall be allowed to use the hall or the piano(s) to practice prior to the Festival. (c) Choirs that regularly use the hall for weekly practices may continue to do so without prejudice. Page 6
