5 5. Exemplary response: I have never left this country but I do have a pen pal who lives in France, and his friendship, while untouchable, is a real treasure to me. Like the author in this passage, I find thinking about my pen pal, even though he is far away, just as the country of Nepal is far away, makes me feel as if I am visiting him in France. All the author has to do is think about or say the word "Namaste" and she feels good. The author is able to describe the people and scenery of Nepal because she has been there (maybe even many times). I can describe France and its people too because of my friendship with Paul. If you never heard of Mammoth Cave, you might think that a place like that couldn t exist. At the end of the story there are more facts about Stephen Bishop and the cave and that is when it becomes clear that this is about a real person and a real place. 12 16. Exemplary response: The author used the words "road to freedom" to symbolize Stephen Bishop s struggle to free himself and his family from slavery. Stephen did not actually travel a "road," but he explored the rooms of Mammoth Cave. The article says that he was probably the first person to set foot in many of its rooms. Stephen s discoveries in Mammoth Cave attracted many visitors who paid Stephen to guide them through the huge cave. By guiding tours, Stephen earned enough money to free himself and his family from slavery.
