1 Communicator Vol. 16 No. 9 Monthly Newsletter for patrons of RC Technologies September 2018 USDA Invests in Rural Broadband in South Dakota RC Technologies is 1 of 12 nationwide projects Announced by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue on August 1st, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $97 million in 12 projects to provide or improve rural broadband service in 11 states: Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. USDA is making the investments through the Telecommunications Infrastructure Loan Program and the Community Connect Grant Program. RC Technologies is 1 of those 12 projects. RC is receiving a Telecommunications Infrastructure Loan Program loan of $17 million to provide internet, video and voice to more than 1,300 households, businesses and key community organizations. These services will create potential for business growth, increase employment, better public safety, and a higher quality of life for subscribers in Robert and Marshall Counties in South Dakota and Richland County in North Dakota. The projects the USDA is investing in today will help improve the quality of life in rural communities. The investments are said to underscore USDA s priority to promote rural economic development by centering around three principles: infrastructure, partnerships and innovation. Investing in telecommunications infrastructure connects people to each other: businesses to customers, farmers to markets and students to a world of knowledge. We are excited to be at this point. Scott Bostrom, General Manager of RC Technologies said. It will help in providing 779 miles of fiber to 1,315 households in rural communities, starting in the New Effington and Claire City exchanges. 2 Efficient Routers... Why That's So Important Especially Now Mobility has never been MORE important to us! We want the ability to travel the countryside using our devices. We want that same mobility in our home. Home wireless networks not only allow us to be more mobile throughout our homes. It allows us to be flexible and efficient with the freedom and convenience to use our laptops, tablets and smartphones in basements, garages, patios, porches and, yes I'll say it, even bathrooms! One of the things we want from our home wireless network or Wi-Fi is for it to be far reaching. So, when you want to access a YouTube video to build something in your garage, you can from your smartphone or tablet. We want our Wi-Fi to work efficiently. This means with a strong signal without latency or slow internet. Ways to help make your Home Wi-Fi more efficient: Age of Your Router - The age of your router matters. Just like a washer, dryer and coffeemaker, your router gets old and wears out too as do other electronics. With advances in imagery and video technology, requires our routers and electronic devices to keep up with that technology to send us that information and images. Placement is Everything - For the best performace having your router centrally located in your house will get you the best coverage through a good part of your home. Shorten the Distance - The farther away, the harder it is for your devices to connect. There is equipment that could possibly extend the distance of how far your devices can reach the Wi-Fi. Contact RC to learn more! Upgrade Electronics and Other Devices - Just as PCs (personal computers) and cellphones need updates, routers do too! Computers, laptops and tablets (ipads, Kindles, etc) older than 3 years are most likely running on old operating systems and software hindering their ablity to connect to the internet and Wi-Fi efficiently. Number of Devices - Disconnect devices not in use. Often times you may have an old device still connected to Wi-Fi not being used anymore. Upgrade Package - Your once young kids are now older or a college kid home adding to more users and more of a draw on your current level of internet package. With that being said, your slow internet may result in needing more bandwidth go to the next level package. Interference - Appliances, concrete walls and steel structures can inhibit signal. Knowing the cause of the interference is helpful to strengthen weak signals.
