1 SATELLITE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION President's Report February 2014 The Voice of the Satellite Industry Since 1995 DON T MISS THE SIA-ORGANIZED MILITARY TRACK PANELS AT: SIA HAS ORGANIZED SEVEN MILITARY TRACK PANELS AT THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE INCLUDING THE "FEATURED PANEL" WHAT'S NEXT FOR DoD SPACE? Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 4:45 p.m. 5:45 p.m. in Room: 207A The Department of Defense s space programs and policies are at a crossroads!! What lessons is the Department learning from the current generation of satellite programs and budgetary pressures? Moderated by Richard McKinney, Former, Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for Space, this panel is scheduled to feature Doug Loverro, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, and Former DoD Satellite Executive Bruce T. Bennett along with four senior commercial satellite industry executives. More information on this panel and the rest of the conference panels is available here.
2 SSPI HONORS THE SATELLITE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION WITH 2014 INDUSTRY INNOVATOR AWARD The Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) will honor SIA, for its work towards export reform, with its 2014 Industry Innovator Award for non-profit organizations. The awards will be presented during the SSPI s Annual Gala, held on March 11 th, the opening night of the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition in Washington, DC. For more than 20 years, the SSPI Industry Innovator Awards have recognized outstanding new contributions to the satellite industry by private-sector, public-sector, or non-profit organizations. Honorees are chosen by a committee of industry experts for accomplishments ranging across a broad spectrum of advanced satellite technology and business applications. In January 2013, SIA accomplished a goal that it had pursued for nearly fifteen years: substantial reform of the export control provisions instituted in the Fiscal Year 1999 Strom Thurmond National Defense Authorization Act, which required that all U.S. satellite exports be regulated as munitions under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). The Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, signed in January 2013 by President Barack Obama, repealed the 1999 provisions and enabled the Executive Branch to implement necessary reforms to export control rules for satellites. SIA CELEBRATES GOLD MEDAL SATELLITE COVERAGE AND THE INDUSTRY'S ROLE AT THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES IN SOCHI SIA celebrated the satellite industry s role at the XXII Olympic Winter Games which officially closed this past Sunday in Sochi, Russia. More than 11,000 media representatives and 90 broadcasters from 123 countries covered the 18 different sports and 98 events and commercial communications satellites carried television and media coverage from the Games to an estimated global audience of 3 billion people - live and as it happened. Commercial satellite operators SES, Intelsat, Eutelsat, and Telesat, provided satellite connectivity to broadcasters and news organizations so they could transmit live video content of the events to locations around the world. NBC Olympics, the U.S. rights holder for Olympic programming, relied on SES satellite capacity during its 1,500 hours of live coverage. Olympic viewers watched either via direct-tohome satellite TV companies, such as DIRECTV, or via cable TV services that received Olympic coverage from satellite feeds. TV channels and service providers also booked almost 5000 hours of satellite transmissions from Eutelsat Communications to bring around-the-clock coverage to viewers throughout Europe. Past Games organizers, broadcasters, security personnel and emergency first responders, have also relied on satellite telephones and satellite data terminals provided by companies such as Iridium and Inmarsat for telephone and broadband connectivity throughout the Olympic site. In addition, U.S. Olympic team members and officials, such as coaches of the U.S. Biathlon team, purchased satellite telephones for enhanced safety while in Sochi. Satellite imagery of the Winter Games venue also provided Olympic organizers with high-resolution photography in and around Sochi to enhance security, forecast weather conditions and track the environmental impact before, during and after the Olympics. U.S. satellite remote sensing company, DigitalGlobe, captured high resolution imagery of the Olympic venues from space daily throughout the
3 Games, and provisioned its collected imagery to customers for security planning, logistics, risk assessment, and monitoring of staging areas, as well as emergency response and disaster recovery. SIA ANNOUNCES RAYTHEON SPACE AND AIRBORNE SYSTEMS AS ITS LATEST MEMBER On February 18 th, SIA officially announced its latest member, Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, a division of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), a technology leader specializing in defense, security and civil markets throughout the world. SIA is pleased to welcome Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems to our Association, said Patricia Cooper, SIA s President. Their 45 years of experience in space technology for environmental sensing, space situational awareness and both enterprise and government solutions will augment SIA's growing membership of satellite sensing manufacturers and enhance SIA's representation of the broader U.S. satellite industry. We are excited to be a part of the Satellite Industry Association and participate in the Association s efforts to advance the interests of the commercial satellite industry, said Ron Stopher, director, Strategy and Business Development, Space Systems. We have a unique history as a sensor solution provider with a 45-year record of innovation and successful on-orbit performance, and we look forward to sharing that perspective with the SIA.
