Note 1: [10 mins] = where listed for Timing guidance only IRG 2014 Inmarsat Workshop Topics and Presentations (21 st 22 nd October 2014 Inmarsat HQ, 99 City Road, London, EC1 1AX) Day 1 (Tuesday 21 st October, Registration 08:30) Coffee/Tea & General Refreshments Introduction & IRG Update: (09:00-09:15) (Martin Coleman, IRG) Welcome, thank Sponsors, Agenda and Logistics Update of IRG activities, events, media relations, since Singapore Update issues we faced in 2013 and 2014, Plans/Events for 2015 Our Mission The Satellite Interference Reduction Group (IRG) is the global industry organisation, whose mission is to combat and mitigate radio frequency interference (RFI) for an interference-free Satellite Frequency Spectrum. Its prime focus is the future of satellite communication technology and the effects or issues of that technology relating to RFI. Key Note: (09:15-09:30) (Mark Steel, ) is our Mission true? what is IRG? IRG and our Future? Working Group updates (Martin Coleman - IRG + Discussion) (09:30-10:30) 1. The Interference Stats & where we, IRG, are going with this? VSAT interference statistics, Root Cause Analysis evaluation, progress and potential VSAT action plan and progress with GVF Potential VSAT improvements and action plan 2. and finally Carrier ID Status a. Progress and schedule; CID Implementation Plan continues b. CID & Government: DoD - US (MoD - UK) relationships utility CID protection using commercial satellites and update from DoD/Airbus Meetings. How do interface to the Military? c. CID roll out, targeting the uplinkers/broadcasters to implement it - Turn CID ON! The role of WBU- ISOG and Broadcast Unions in general. IRG to target major UK broadcasters? d. IRG to run specific workshops on this throughout 2015 and starting with Broadcasters in the UK such as BBC, BskyB, GlobeCast, SISLive, etc Start a similar process in the USA with EUI lead? e. Discussion about using Carrier ID for those Customers managing their own Spectrum/Transponders and other uses f. SDA Database implementation g. What about Redundancy Systems - how do we record? plus [5 mins] CID Detection - (Thierry Balanche - ) 3. Those Difficult Cases Progress and schedule; Action Plan status; Future ITU workshops; Geolocation - standardized reporting and procedures moving forward; Education, telling the Story - What practical steps can be done? General discussion Break (10:30-10:45) Sponsored by
4. A quick look at Education and where IRG fits: (Jan Peters - Katalytik/STEM) (10:30-11:00) IRG went back to school in September ; so why Education? - Meet the STEMNET Program 5. Product Innovation Spotlight (11:00-11:30) Our "Product Innovation Spotlight" time limited session is a new idea and we want to expand this to give our members a chance of informing our Workshops on something new and relevant to IRG business, something that we have not seen before. Free for all IRG Members, offering 10 minute slots to full members, 5 minute slots to associate members. If any non-member wishes to present in this new session, then please contact IRG for more details [10 mins] Carrier ID Detection - the Comtech way - (Tom Blake - Crystal Solutions ) 2. [15 mins] Ephemeris Data: a Solution? Taking a look at the Zodiac product line-up - (Thierry Balanche - ) 3. [ 5 mins] VSAT Commissioning & Interference Minimization - (Alvaro Sanchez - Integrasys) 6. Identifying WiMAX (or other wireless systems') interference from Space operating at C-band ( GHz)?: (Dr. Ramón Nartallo, FMP Chief Engineer, QinetiQ ) (11:30-12:30) Can a system be able to identify WiMAX (or other wireless systems') interference to VSATs and/or TVROs operating at C-band ( GHz) from Space? On-board Detection? We know from ESA that we can detect people emitting in a frequency band. So if we built something in C-band we could detect WiMAX transmitters, VSAT transmitters, TV broadcasters in that band. Can we find interferers from space (a LEO satellite that might allow geo-location on subsequent passes or by using two satellites in tandem)? Note: the accuracy of any geolocation system still needs to be defined If this is possible, when might it be possible to put into service? This could be of great value to the WRC preparations If not available in time for WRC-15, how about WRC-19, either for C-band, Kaband or both? Just recently ESA came across a project developing a prototype payload called Frequency Monitoring Package. The company is QinetiQ, based in the UK and who are presenting today... Lunch (12:30-13:30) Inmarsat facilities or Out & About 7. Case Studies (13:30-14:30) 1. [30 mins] TBD - (Andreas Voigt, ) 2. [30 mins] One Satellite Geolocation - (Erwin Greilinger, ) 8. Visit to the Inmarsat NOC: (Mark Steel - ) (14:30-15:15) Break (15:15-15:30) Sponsored by
9. Case Studies (Continued): (15:30-16:00) 3. [30 mins] Improvements in Geolocation/Monitoring & new Services - (Guido Baraglia - ) 10. Developing the Commercial Initiatives for the Military Arena: (16:00-17:00) With reference to the recent DoD Commercial SATCOM Study meeting in DC with Aerospace, MITRE and the DoD with updates from Airbus UK. With Training and Carrier ID the two leading topics that the study meeting locked on to, BIG Data was that other BIG issue. Initially and to help start things off the Military could be fed commercial data and there are connections that make this possible! So Statistics, RFI Types, Carrier IDs not recognised within our commercial environment, etc. (Continued overleaf ) Martin Jarrold - GVF: The successful GVF led 'SatCom Endeavour' training and plans for follow-on delivery of the auto-deploy training to military - this helps with our military focus, could we suggest a military roundtable, where we discuss all things military across the tables and this can be mentioned? And/or, ask if GVF have a case study on this? Day 1 Finish (17:00) Drinks (TBD?) (18:00-20:30) Sponsored by (TBD?)
Day 2 (Wednesday 22 nd October, Registration 08:30) Coffee/Tea & general Refreshments 11. Addressing the VSAT Interference Statistics: (Moderator - Martin Jarrold - GVF) (09:00-10:15) So focusing on Type Approvals and QA and with GVF's new contract with ESA to conduct SOTM testing and approvals for European manufacturers and preparations to begin delivery of type-approval testing and training in support of GX/Inmarsat this panel will take a closer look the whole QA process with respect to those VSAT Interference Statistics. The Panel: Larry Zarola - Telesat: Introduction to this session A related experience involving a customer running 125W BUCs on very small marine antennas with a fiber link from inside unit to antenna. The fiber link failed which raised the noise floor of the entire spacecraft. So, should we enforce a maximum transmit EIRP capability!? It is not often any customer will buy an HPA with 20dB more gain than needed but this is what happens when they do! Mark Steel - : Equipment Quality/Testing - recap on those interesting results! Andreas Voigt - : Taking a look at Eutelsat s processes and views Rolv Midthassel - ESA: SOTM testing & approvals for European manufacturers Roger Boddy - Global Teleports: A practical view from an SME Questions being asked are: What is going on? Are these processes just too expensive!? Will these process cut out the SME/Entrepreneur? Why is it so complex at the moment? How does IRG support this initiative? Break (10:15-10:30) Sponsored by 12. Dysfunctional Networks and Network Validation & SES SatGuard: (10:30-11:30) 13. Case Studies (11:30-12:30) (Petter Amundsen, VeriSat AS & Chris Grogan, ) 1) [20 mins] GSM Demodulation Tool - (Andreas Voigt - Eutelsat) 2) [10 mins] Maritime VSAT Antenna Pointing - Update - (Larry Zarola - Telesat) 3) [20 mins] RFI Retransmissions - (Gerardo Corona, Eutelsat Americas/ ) 4) [10 mins] TBD - (Harmonic) Lunch (12:30-13:30) Inmarsat facilities or Out & About
14. Spectrum Demand for Mobile Broadband: (Richard Womersley, LS Telcom for ESOA) (13:30-14:00) With WRC15 on everyone s mind, IRG has been on the road distributing this message for ESOA throughout Today, we revisit this and look in to getting those numbers right and how IRG can help with WRC preparations and ESOA in its mission 15. Training - What is the real Objective? (Moderator: Roger Boddy - Global Teleports) (14:00-15:15) Is the training landscape Ok? Again focusing on Training & Certification, and Best Practices the following session tries to look at where we are and the way forward Martin Jarrold, GVF on latest SNG Training Initiatives, Plans to have "Accredited Training Organisations" in Europe (as GVF already has in N. America) to drive adoption of the EUI-SNG Certification and working with the EUI Alternatives and the EUI? (Martin Coleman - IRG) Open for General Discussion on What should the EUI focus on now? Do we have the right Products in place? Have we got SNG Training right? What does the military need? How do we get these courses to market? Break (15:15-15:30) Sponsored by End of Workshop Day 2 Finish (15:30) Members Meeting follows
