ESF 5050 User Guide The Ektapro 5050 projector is fitted with a specially designed card, including its own dedicated processor, to optimise the performance of the projector. Installations can cover a wide area using just a single cable to carry TimeCode and programming instructions between projectors. For audio-visual attractions, theatres, museums, or the most inspired architectural presentations... wherever there is a need to link projectors by the most simple and effective means, this model is the natural choice. TimeCode and program data are transmitted simultaneously to all projectors, making them truly independent. The chain can be broken only by disconnecting the cable. The 3 standards ELECTROSONIC, Dataton and PCOM are supported and automatically detected. On top of this, the dynamic addressing feature is available in PCOM mode (this feature is normally available only in the Ektapro 7000 and 9000 series). Its high sampling rate allows real smooth fades of steps. A special tray-position feature guarantees that the correct slide is always in place. Even if the tray position is altered manually, it will automatically reposition to the correct slide at the next instruction. Even a power-cut will not affect its programming. Fitted with an Eprom circuit, a single card can store TimeCode and show programming of up to 1600 instructions. Each projector will store only its own instructions, e.g. 10 ESF`s 5050 let you record a show of instructions. The card is capable of generating an RS232 TimeCode signal, by which to synchronise the other projectors in the chain. It is ideally suited to interactive applications: a computer controls the show by generating the TimeCode signal, and automatically triggers the appropriate sequence by sending a Tape Play instruction. Using the Timer function, a number of projectors can run either simultaneously or alternately, without the need for any external controlling device. This includes control of the slide number, fade-up and fade-down times and the fade speed. The show will either start playing in loop when the projector\power is switched on or it will run once everytime the line up button pressed. A show stored in one projector may be transferred into another, just like copying a floppy disk. The card can return status information regarding the bulbs, the tray and general hardware failure, for use with the ELECTRONIC ES 1561 or software such as EASY. It includes a diagnostic feature which will test the different parts of the projector, including the RS232 communication cable, no additional test equipment is required. It also includes an adjustable line-up feature, which is automatically disengaged as soon as an RS232 instruction is received. (This eliminates the risk of starting a show with the line-up slide displayed).
This model includes : 1000 different fade rates. 100 light - levels animation routines. Control of the snap shutter. An adjustable maximum light - level. Standby operation. An optimised Mechanical - Zero function. Random Access. 8 adjustable lamp cooling delay curves. No slide - no light feature (may be overridden). Rear of the unit : 1 Two 6-pin DIN sockets, for RS232 communication, wired in parallel to ensure continuity in the chain of projectors. 2 A green LED, used exclusively to indicate the reception of RS232 communication. This indicates that the programming instructions are being correctly received. 3 A red LED, used to indicate test results. 4 The adress switch 5 The line-up button. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 3
Using the ESF5050 projector The Line-up function This feature allows graduated control of the light-level. A single press of the button will light or extinguish the bulb from 0-100%. Holding the button in varies the light-level gradually. Note : The line-up function is automatically disengaged as soon as the projector receives an RS232 instruction. A Built-in diagnostic function for the projector The test sequence is performed by holding the line-up button in, whilst switching the projector off and then on again. The line-up button should be released as soon as the red test LED lights up. OFF I ON The tray will be positioned at a slide number corresponding to the Eprom circuit s memory capacity: 4 = 400 instructions 16 = 1600 instructions... The bulb will be tested by a short fade-up k. fade-down sequence. The snap shutter will be tested similarly. If the address switch is changed, the tray will be positioned to the corresponding slide number, this tests the function of the switch as well as the tray transport mechanism. The RS232 communications may be tested by inserting a loop -type 6-pin DIN plug (pin 1 wired to pin 5), The green signal LED will indicate that the communications circuits are responding correctly. Your communication cables may be tested in a similar way, by using an inverter cable. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 4
Testing the Eprom version number By first setting the address switch to 0 and then switching the projector on, the tray will be positioned to the slide number which corresponds to the Eprom version number. The red test LED will indicate the release level of the Eprom. OFF I ON PCOM & ELECTROSONIC modes The 5050 projector remains 100% compatible with the Ektapro protocol. It receives and processes all PCOM instructions, and may be connected to other non-electrosonic synchronisation systems. The Ektapro 5050, when configured in PCOM mode, includes two features that are normally available only in the Ektapro 7000 and 9000 series: dynamic addressing and 'High Light'. OFF I ON Configuring the Ektapro 5050 operating mode (ELECTROSONIC, DATATON and PCOM) Once connected to power the projector sets itself automatically in the detected RS 232 mode: ELECTROSONIC= Orange DATATON = RED PCOM = Green Note : In DATATON mode - High Light function valid - The installation could require a booster in case of using a smartpax. Owing to the fact that the RS 232 commands pass through the ESF 5050 it is more advisable to make them the first links of the chain. Power has to switched off before changing the mode! Checking the operating mode Checking whether the projector is in Kodak or Electrosonic mode is simple: when operating in Electrosonic mode, if you change the address switch of the projector, the red test LED will flash briefly. This serves to distinguish the line-up button from the address switch when working in darkness; this feature is disabled in Kodak Pcom mode. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 5

The Timer Function of the Ektapro ESF 5050 The Timer Function lets the ESF 5050 run shows on its own. There is no need to control it by a computer, neither in parallel or nor in alternating mode. One single ESF 5050 or several ones (connected to another or not) can simply be defined via the adress switch: slide number, on screen time, off screen time, fade rate and start mode. The Timer Function features 1. Number of slides in the magazin (every projector must have the same number of slides in the tray) 2. On-screen-time This is an essential feature if you want to run several projectors in parallel or alternating mode. The master projector will be defined by entering 95 via the adress switch and the slave projectors are to be daisy-chained with an inverter cabel. The projectors with an odd adress number will read the signal as on screen time while the projectors with an even adress number will read the signal as off sreen time. 3. Off-screen-time This feature allows in case of an alternating projection to define the off screen time of the projectors with an odd adress number and the on screen time of projectors with an even adress number. If '0' (zero) is entered as off screen time the projector will chose the minimum speed relative to its slide changing time. 4. Fade rates Both fade up and fade down rates can be set. How to programm the Timer Function Set the adress switch to number 95 OFF I ON Switch off shortly the projector while holding pushed the line up button until the red blinked twice. 11 HOLDING SHOWS IN MEMORY The Ektapro 5050 is able to record a show and retain it for a period in excess of one decade. The recorded show will include its TimeCode synchronisation; it can therefore make use of all the subtleties and refinements which are available when using a modern programming system. Note The projector is equipped with a special tray-positioning feature which guarantees that the correct slide is in place, under all circumstances and in all configurations. (Even if the tray position is altered using the manual slide-changing buttons, it will automatically follow the program and reposition to the correct slide as soon as the buttons are released). 12 You will need to reload EASY using the -td0 option Type: easy -tdo In EASY s configuration page, set the TimeCode to EBU in 100ths of a second, and disable the Auto-Position function. Add the TAPE icon to the Status Area. The commands used to make the projector record the show must, without fail, be placed at the first and last lines of the show. The Tape Record command must be the first line of the show. All of the following lines will be recorded by the projector(s), until the Tape Stop command is reached. This last command must end the program and will indicate to the projector(s) that the recording process is complete. During the recording process, the red test LED will flicker as long as the program is being recorded. If the recording is completed successfully then the LED will go out. BEWARE : In a recorded show, no AT or WAIT time may exceed an interval of 11 minutes. Note : The projector s address (ie. the address switch setting) is recorded in memory as part of the show, and will be made known by positioning the tray to the corresponding slide number when the show is loaded and ready to run. Before running a show, you may verify the contents of the Ektapro 5050 memory via the computer: in IMMEDIATE mode, send a Tape Play Mode command to put the projectors into run mode, and disable the message types A, B, C and E in EASY s configuration page. Running the show will generate a TimeCode signal to synchronise the projectors. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 12

Click on the command RECORD : The 'Tape Record' command must be the first line of the show. If a Pause command is insert in the show, the master projector wait until he received the command 'play' like that : ^ARP01^B0=^W^C or in hexa D All of the following lines will be recorded by the projectors, until the 'Tape Stop' command is reached. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 15
This last command indicate to the projectors that the recording process is complete. The projecteur write the show in his EEPROM (like a HARD DISK), this process take a few times ( 1 or 2 minutes ). When the projector have finished to write the tray go to position 40 and return to position 0, indicating, the show had been writting correctly. To run your show, set the address of one of the projector to '99' ( Master ) and other to '98' ( Slaves ). ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 16
RUNNING A SHOW Shows which are recorded in the memory of one or more 5050 a projectors may be run by using one of the following methods : a) If a a rojector is set to address N 99 when it is switched on, it becomes autonomous and will generate an RS232 TimeCode signal. b) If a a rojector is set to address N 98 when it is switched on, it becomes subservient to the RS232 TimeCode signal received via its communications cable. The RS232 TimeCode signal may be generated by : An autonomous projector (equipped with an inverter cable). A computer or similar device. A consumer CD a layer, of the ESF1520 type, equipped with a Serial- CD card, the stereo soundtrack remains intact in this operation. An external switch wired between a ins 1 A 5 of the 6 pin DIN socket communications cable may also be used to trigger a Tape pause command which is held within the projector s memory; this allows the running of the show to be controlled externally. Copying the Eprom memory from one a projector into another You will need : a source projector. an inverter cable. a destination projector. To perform the transfer : Male Female Set the address switch of both a projectors to N 97. OFF I ON Switch both a projectors off and then on again. OFF I ON press the line-up button on the source projector for 2 seconds: this will initiate the transfer. If the process is completed successfully then the tray positions of the a projectors will not change; if the tray positions change then you should look- up their meaning in the Troubleshooting chapter. The address switch settings of the two a projectors must now be reset, and both units switched off and on again to complete the operation. ESF 5050 Ektapro User Guide V 7 17
Troubleshooting The projector does not respond to the instructions being sent. Check that the address switch has not been left on 0. A projector which is set to address 0 cannot receive RS232 instructions; this is indicated by the red test LED which will flash continuously. This is because multiprojector shows do not use numbers below 1 to identify a projector. Checks are made throughout all loading and copying operations which may affect the running of a show. Possible reports at the end of an operation are : The tray is positioned to slide N 70 This indicates that a transmission error has been detected. 1 Check that the cable used for the transfer is an inverter cable. 2 Check that the cards in the source and destination projectors have the same version number. The tray is positioned to slide N 71 This indicates that an error has occurred whilst writing to projector s Eprom memory. 1 In the case of a copying operation, check that both projectors have the same memory capacity. 2 Check that the size of a show transmitted from EASY does not exceed the memory capacity of the projector. The chapter entitled Built-in diagnostic function will show you how to determine the Eprom memory capacity of the projector. The tray is positioned to slide N 72 This indicates that no valid show was found in the projector s memory. The tray is positioned to slide N 73 The show contains an AT or a WAIT cue with an interval greater than 11 minutes. This cue must be split into two lines.
