1 Diary Of A Great Book Four weeks and some 500+ Country stations later, ratings for Fall 2011 diary markets are complete and the news is positive: Among stations with a 1.0 share or better in either of the past two surveys, Country s overall shares increased 3.7% from the last ratings period and several stations had breakout books. The overall format ratings champ is, once again, Emmis WTHI/Terre Haute, IN, in spite of dipping , if you want to call a 26.3 dipping. Bristol s WXBQ/Johnson City, TN increased , which, according to PD Bill Hagy, was the station s 69th consecutive No. 1 ranking during a 20-year period dating back to Here s a look at three other success stories from Fall 11: Aloha Trust s WFRE/Frederick, MD enjoyed its highest share since Spring 04, improving According to station PD Jess Wright, the news was equally good among persons 25-54, with FRE jumping , which was also its best share in that demo since Spring 04. Jess Wright Wright credits a focus on music and community for FRE s huge book. What we constantly hear from our listeners is how much February 6, 2012, Issue 280 The Dolphins Make Him Cry: WFMS/Indianapolis s Tammy Lively and Darius Rucker visit Thursday in Indy s Super Bowl Village. Rucker was in town to perform as part of the week s festivities. Road To CRS: Turbo Talent The Reynolds Group s Steve Reynolds leads Turbo Charging Your High-Octane Air Talent on CRS Thursday at 10am. Sponsored by United Stations, the session will focus on what Reynolds calls the three macro things every morning show should address to be successful. A talent coach who s worked with morning shows in virtually every format, Reynolds says he ll offer examples for each macro: Develop a content strategy or plot line, earn or affirm four critical images and have a tactical design of the we do in the market, she says. They know if something s going on, we ll be a part of it. WFRE s annual St. Jude radiothon generated $354,000 in Another regular benchmark event, its Bras For A Cause, raised $17,000 last October. A strong crop of music and artists also helped drive the brand. All are focused on maximizing ratings in station s Fall ratings story, says Wright, who cites Luke Bryan, Zac Steve Reynolds the PPM environment. Brown Band and Miranda Lambert as acts who popped, giving One of the questions that s never asked is, Why do people WFRE musical muscle. turn us on? It s a simple question, but can be difficult to answer, The station s Random Acts Of Country free acoustic shows have he says. We have to ask what s in it for the listener. We can get featured up-and-coming artists including The Eli Young Band and really deep and philosophical with that question, but the objective Thompson Square. 3 Page 3 Regarding the first macro content strategy or plot line Reynolds points to television. TV shows are brilliant at developing plots, but we never have that conversation in radio. We have to determine a show s content position in the marketplace, and it needs to be as unique as the music position. As for the four critical images, he teases one: relevancy. You have to have these four to have a fighting chance for people to wake up each morning and want to tune in. I m a lucky guy, he continues. I work with some pretty big shows. And I ve been put in rooms with very tenured talent with an aversion to change. But the world has changed, especially with PPM, and the tactical design of brands needs to be redesigned to maximize that. Much of the information will be aimed at managers and programmers, and helping them frame the conversations that lead to change. If it ain t broke doesn t apply, he says. If it ain t broke, break it. Someone out there wants to take those bodies who are listening to your show. Up to one-third of people turn on the TV when they wake up. Why? They re filling a need on those TV morning shows in a brilliant way that s based on a radio model. It s interesting people attacking the day s topics in a very inventive way. Turbo Charging Your High-Octane Air Talent will illustrate these points with a case study of a major market morning show. Growing up in New York, there wasn t an outlet for country music, so I d listen to WBAB/Babylon, NY. Run into any weird weather on the radio tour? A tornado blew Lisa Matassa through Greenville, SC when we visited WESC. So as soon as I finished my performance, a guy runs in and says, I m so sorry to interrupt, but you have all my on-air staff in here. A tornado s heading this way, and we need to warn the public. We didn t know if we needed to go into a shelter somewhere. Thank God it passed and didn t come near the station. Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio? We were driving to KDBR/Kalispell, MT s morning show when we heard it. We were listening to the station on the way and they started playing Wouldn t You Like To Know. We got a speeding ticket because we were so excited. We tried to explain to Officer Proctor what was going on. He said, I m really happy for you, but you need to slow down. How do you adjust to all the travel on the radio tour? I have a Mophie iphone self-charging case that saves my battery. I ve lost count of how many times I ve forgotten my iphone wall charger, and the case helps a lot. How do you stay fit on the road? I pack workout bands in case the hotel doesn t have a gym. And I avoid the truckstop candy aisle because I crave every kind of M&M. The chocolate mint ones are insane. Which regional is the most interesting driver? Jim Dorman. He does an amazing impression of Christopher Walken, and he knows the words to every single song on the radio. 6 Page 6 MY TUNES: SONGS THAT INSPIRED MY LIFE Arista s Mgr./Regional Promotion Andy Elliott discusses his most influential songs, albums and concerts: 1. Kiss, Des Moines, 1978: The Pope was in town on the same day. Guess where I went? 2. Dan Fogelberg in concert: I didn t want to go. I thought I would be bored to tears. But it was the most unbelievable Andy Elliott night of music I ve ever seen. 3. Boston s Boston: It was the first album cover I remember seeing. My brother bought it, and I couldn t stop looking at the amazing fire guitar artwork. I remember sitting and watching my brother learn to play More Than A Feeling and listening to it over and over. 4. Garth Brooks/The Dance: In September 1993, I lost my daughter Allison. The radio station I worked for, KJJY/ Des Moines, played this song at the top of each hour as a memorial tribute to her. The song will always hold that memory for me. 5. This spot is left blank in anticipation of whatever ends up being the first No. 1 song that I work. A highly regarded song or album you ve never heard: I don t know if I ve ever heard a Jay-Z song. An important piece of music you just don t get: The Wiggles. An album you played or listened to incessantly: Judge Jerrod And The Hung Jury by Jerrod Niemann. I had this album about a year before he signed with Arista, and now I get to work with him. Pinch me. One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Birdhouse In Your Soul by They Might Be Giants. 8 already off to a great start. The station improved WILQ PD Ted Minier calls Spring s 17.9 share, a slight dip, and he s right, as the station had registered above a 20 share in both Fall and Spring Minier describes ILQ as a full-service station, noting, We still run one minute of national news Ted Minier from ABC every hour on the hour from 5am through 6pm. We focus on the community. It s trite to say, Be local and be loved, but here in Williamsport, it really works. Look on WILQ s website and you ll notice the Q-Rooster mascot, which has been a fixture since the station s launch. The Q-Rooster is invited to every community event possible, and the station has three different suits to accommodate the demand. Minier also handles mornings on WILQ while serving as OM and day-to-day PD at four other stations in the cluster. Asked if he s ever donned the Q-Rooster gear, Minier tells Country Aircheck, Of course, I have! I don t ask anybody to do something I haven t. Listen here. Not only did JMJ Broadcasting s KTPK/Topeka, KS register the highest share of any Classic Country station during the Fall, it was the lone Classic Country outlet to achieve a No. 1 market rank. KTPK jumped (3-1), leapfrogging MCC Radio s WIBW, which slid (1t-3). That s a notable feat in a time when current music is considered exceptional, and even more impressive in a market with four Country signals combining for 25.4 format shares. Of course, KTPK s monster 100- kw stick also helped. KTPK PD Robb Rose tells Country Aircheck the station s core sound is 80s music, with no songs newer than 1993 and a musical vintage dating back to the mid- 50s ñ think Kitty Wells. Rose points out two specific areas that make Robb Rose TPK formidable. First, he says, We have an owner who believes in the product. We re live and local from 5:30am-9pm. For a station in a market this size (No. 200) to be February 6, 2012 CHECK OUT Dierks Bentley Home (Capitol) Bentley s sixth studio album opens with the No. 1 single Am I The Only One and features his current single as its theme. I feel like my real Home is in the center of country music, he says. Little Big Town s Karen Fairchild appears on When You Gonna Come Around and Bentley s daughter Evie guests on the closer Thinking Of You. Various Artists The Music Inside: A Collaboration Dedicated To Waylon Jennings, Volume II (Scatter/Average Joes) Dierks Bentley, Hank Williams, Jr., Montgomery Gentry, Justin Moore, Jack Ingram, Colt Ford, Pat Green, Josh Thompson, Jessi Colter, Jewel and Wyatt McCubbin cover 11 Waylon classics on this tribute collection. Another key is that the station optimizes its partnership with WIBW-TV, the top-ranked CBS affiliate. During the fall, the two entities combined for 60 appearances, many of which included TV coverage, for their Country Legends Cares campaign, which netted more than $90,000 worth of toys for charity leading up to Christmas. KTPK ran a Legends And Loot cash contest during the fall, with a Legends Song of the Day announced each morning and $100 awarded each time it played. Rose, who does afternoons, just arrived in October, adding to the appeal of KTPK s longtime airstaff. They all work their butts off to prep and make a difference when they open the mic, he says.
