Please visit the XON Digital Design Website at to obtain the latest information on our new products and updates. Local Control Panel The local control panel gives access to all adjustable parameters and provides status information for any of the cards in the Synapse frame, including the Synapse rack controller. The local control panel is also used to back-up and restore card settings. Please refer to the RRC18, RRS18, RRC10, RRC08 RRC04 and RRS04 manuals for a detailed description of the local control panel, the way to set-up remote control over IP and for frame related settings and status information. Remote Control Capabilities The remote control options are explained in the rack controller (RRC/ERC/RRS/ERS) manual. The method of connection to a computer using Ethernet is also described in these manuals.! CHECK-OUT: XON CORTEX SOFTWRE WILL INCRESE SYSTEM FLEXIILITY OF ONE OR MORE SYNPSE FRMES lthough not required to use Cortex with a Synapse frame you are strongly advised to use a remote personal computer or laptop PC with the Cortex installed as this increases the ease of use and understanding of the modules. 3

2 Unpacking and Placement Unpacking The xon Synapse card must be unpacked in an anti-static environment. Care must be taken NOT to touch components on the card always handle the card carefully by the edges. The card must be stored and shipped in anti-static packaging. Ensuring that these precautions are followed will prevent premature failure from components mounted on the board. Placing the card The Synapse card can be placed vertically in an SFR18 frame or horizontally in an SFR04 and SFR08 frame. Locate the two guide slots to be used, slide in the mounted circuit board, and push it firmly to locate the connectors. Correct insertion of card is essential as a card that is not located properly may show valid indicators, but does not function correctly. SDI / HD CRDS HD or SDI cards can be mixed and matched in the SFR18 and SFR04 frames. REMRK: On power up all LEDs will light for a few seconds, this is the time it takes to initialize the card. 4

3 Quick Start When Powering-up On powering up the Synapse frame, the card set will use basic data and default initialisation settings. ll LEDs will light during this process. fter initialisation, several LEDs will remain lit the exact number and configuration is dependant upon the number of inputs connected and the status of the inputs. Default settings In its default condition, the 2HX10 will act as a frame synchroniser and auto phase corrector. ll the integrity monitor functions are not activated. The card is able to lock on to a HD sync 600mV nominal TRI-level. as described in the SMPTE 274M and 296m spec. SD sync 300 mv nominal I-level sync can also be used. 9

5 Settings Menu Introduction The settings menu displays the current state of each 2HX10 setting and allows you to change these. Settings can be changed by using the front panel of the Synapse frame (SFR18, SFR08 or SFR04) or Cortex software. The SCP08 control can also be used. Please refer to chapter 3 for information on Synapse front panel control and xon Cortex. Format The format menu item selects the input video standard. UTO: the unit recognizes format is presented at the input and automatically sets that format. It will take more time for the card to lock. 1080i i p p p i-60, 720p p p p p-24 SD525 SD625 The default setting is set to UTO. Ouput-Config Output-Config 2x2 configures the outputs as input to output 1 and input to output 2. Output-Config 2x1 configures the selected input ( or ) to both output 1 and 2. Output-Conffig Mix_-over- will lay input on top of input, and output this on both outputs. The default setting is 2x1 Mix_-start This sets the starting point of input in % of the total screen width. The default is 12,5%. Refer to appendix 1 for details. Mix_-stop This sets the ending point of input in % of the total screen width. The default is 87,5%. Refer to appendix 1 for details. 10

Mix_-start This sets the starting point of input in % of the total screen width. The default is 12,5%. Refer to appendix 1 for details. Mix_-stop This sets the ending point of input in % of the total screen width. The default is 87,5%. Refer to appendix 1 for details. Input-Sel Input-Sel determines which inputs are selected. In UTO mode the card acts as a backup-switcher, and all kind of integrity checks can be set as criteria to switch to the other channel. GPIonly allows you to switch between channel and with GPI contacts. The uto-gpi setting combines the auto and the GPI function. INPUT is the manual selection of input. INPUT is the manual selection of input. The default setting is uto- GPI. Note: Closing GPI 3 overrides this setting. The card will go to auto mode when GPI 3 is closed. Switch-ack Switch-ack can be set On, Off or ackup_fail. When Switch-ack is set to On, and a change over to channel 2 has occurred, the card will immediately switch back to channel 1 when channel 1 is OK again. When Switch-ack is set to Off, and a change over to channel 2 has occurred. In this state the card will always stay on channel 2. Set to ackup-fail, channels only switch when input has an error and input is OK. The default setting is Off. Switchback-dly This setting sets the minimum amount of correct frames before the card switches back when a switchback is active and channel comes back without errors. Can be set between 0 and 255 frames. y default this is set to 0 frames. LockMode The 2HX10can lock to the input or can lock on to a reference. (I-level or Tri-level selectable in setting Ref-Type). LOCKMODE determines whether the card locks on to the INPUT_, INPUT_, REFERENCE or FREE-RUN The default setting is reference. 11

Ref-Input This setting allows the user to determine which reference input is used to lock the 2HX10. Input 1 is the uppermost input of the RRC/RRS18 rack controller connector panel at the back of the SFR18. The SFR04 has one reference input. The available settings for Ref-Input are 1, 2 and uto. The default setting of Ref-Input is 1. uto: automatically selects the ref of the selected standard. Ref_1 is the 50Hz standard, Ref_2 is the 60 Hz standard. Ref-Type REF-TYPE sets the type of reference TRI-level or Ilevel. The default setting is I-level H-Delay The H-Delay setting allows adjustment of the horizontal phase of the output signal with respect to the selected reference input. The H-Delay setting gives a delay in addition to the reference timing. For example in 625/50: if the H-Delay is set to 10 samples, the output signal will be delayed by the reference timing + 10 samples of 37ns. Therefore the delay = Ref timing+ 37ns x10. The signal is delayed (advanced) with respect to the phase of the reference signal. In 625/50 the adjustment range of H-Delay is samples, μs (one PL TV line). In 525/60 the adjustment range of H- Delay is samples, μs (one NTSC TV line).the default setting is 0 samples. The delay of the card is indicated by the tracking pulse on the NC output. This can be used, for example, to track an audio delay. Note: Please refer to the following description of Ref input for synchronization and timing information. HD resolutions 1 pix = 13.5nsec 1080i-60 Range pix 1080i-50 Range pix 1080p-30 Range pix 1080p-25 Range pix 1080p-24 Range pix 1035i-60 Range pix 720p-60 Range pix 720p-50 Range pix 720p-30 Range pix 720p-25 Range pix 720p-24 Range pix 12

SD resolution 525i-60 Range i-60 Range V-Delay The V-Delay setting allows adjustment of the vertical phase of the output signal with respect to the selected reference input. The V-Delay setting gives a delay in addition to the reference timing. For example, if the V-Delay is set to 10 TV lines, the output signal will be delayed by the reference timing + 10 TV lines. The signal is delayed (advanced) with respect to the phase of the reference signal. In 625/50 the adjustment range of V-Delay is lines (one TV frame). In 525/60 the adjustment range is lines (one TV frame). The default setting is 0 lines. The delay of the card is indicated by the tracking pulse on the NC output. This can be used, for example, to track an audio delay. Note: Please refer to the description of Ref input for synchronization and timing information. 525i60 Range lines 625i60 Range p Range i Range p Range Carrier-Det Carrier-Det allows the card to detect a SDI carrier. 30 7 Events Menu Introduction n event is a special message that is generated on the card asynchronously. This means that it is not the response to a request to the card, but a spontaneous message. What is the Goal of an event? The goal of events is to inform the environment about a changing condition on the card. message may be broadcast to mark the change in status. The message is volatile and cannot be retrieved from the system after it has been broadcast. There are several means by which the message can be filtered. Events The events reported by the 2HX10 are as follows; Ref-Status Ref-Status can be selected between = no event, are the priority setting. If set to 0 no events will be generated. If the reference is lost an Event will be generated at the priority. Input_ Input_ can be selected between = no event, are the priority setting. If set to 0 no events will be generated. If input is lost, an Event will be generated at the priority. Input_ Input_ can be selected between = no event, are the priority setting. If set to 0 no events will be generated. GENERIC_4 GENERIC_4 can be selected between = no event, are the priority setting. If set to 0 no events will be generated. If probe detects TC presence errors (when TC- Pres-Det is switched on) or a TC freeze is detected (when TCfreeze-Det is switched on), an Event will be generated at the priority. This information is only needed when the GPI16 card is used or when software is implemented. What information is available in an event? The message consists of the following items; 1) message string to show what has happened in text, for example: INP_LOSS, REF_LOSS, INP_RETURN. 2) tag that also shows what happens, but with a predefined number: e.g. 1 (= loss of input), 2 (= loss of reference), 129(= = return of input). For a list of these predefined tags see the table on the next page. 3) priority that marks the importance of an event. This value is defined by the user and can have any value between 1 and 255, or 0 when disabled. 4) slot number of the source of this event. 30

The Message String The message string is defined in the card and is therefore fixed. It may be used in software like Cortex to show the event. The Tag The tag is also defined in the card. The tag has a fixed meaning. When controlling or monitoring software should make decisions based on events, it is easier to use the tag instead of interpreting a string. The first implementation is the tag controlled switch in the GPI16. In cases where the event marks a change to fault status (e.g. 1 for Loss of Input) the complement is marked by the tag increased by 128 (80 hex ) (e.g. 129 (81 hex ) for Return of Input). Defining Tags The tags defined for the 2HX10 are: Event Menu Item Tag Description nnouncements 01 hex =N 81 hex = 1 nnouncing of report and control values Ref-Status 02 hex =REF_LOSS 82 hex =REF_RETURN Reference lost or returned Input_ 31 hex =INP_LOSS b1 hex =INP_RETURN Input lost or returned Input_ 41 hex =INP_LOSS c1 hex =INP_RETURN Input lost or returned TRS-Status_ 17 hex = TRS_ERROR_ 97 hex = TRS_OK_ TRS in error or OK TRS-Status_ 48 hex = TRS_ERROR_ c8 hex = TRS_OK_ TRS in error or OK ctive_out_ 19 hex = IN ->_OUT_ 99 hex = IN ->_OUT_ Output is input or ctive_out_ 1a hex = IN ->_OUT_ 9a hex = IN ->_OUT_ Output is input or Freeze-Status_ 0e hex =FREEZE_ERROR_ 8e hex =FREEZE_OK_ Probe freeze error/ok Freeze-Status_ 4e hex =FREEZE_ERROR_ ce hex =FREEZE_OK_ Probe freeze error/ok lack-status_ 0f hex =TRS_ERROR_ 8f hex =TRS_OK_ Probe black error/ok lack-status_ 4f hex =TRS_ERROR_ cf hex =TRS_OK_ Probe black error/ok FScale-Status_ 10 hex =FULL_SCLE_ERROR_ 90 hex =FULL_SCLE_OK_ Clip/OK audio on probe FScale-Status_ 50 hex =FULL_SCLE_ERROR_ d0 hex =FULL_SCLE_OK_ Clip/OK audio on probe udio-data- 05 hex =UDIO_ERROR_ 85 hex =UDIO_OK_ Error when audio in monitored channel (set with ud_err_event) is silent/lost/n. udio-data- 45 hex =UDIO_ERROR_ c5 hex =UDIO_OK_ Error when audio in monitored channel (set with ud_err_event) is silent/lost/n. The higher the priority of the alarm, the higher this value. Setting the priority to Zero disables the announcement of this alarm. larms with priorities equal or higher than the Error Threshold setting of the RRC will cause the error LED on the Synapse rack front panel to light. The ddress Together with the message string or the tag, the slot number or address of the card is relevant to be able to assign the event to a certain card. 31

8 LED Indication Error LED The error LED indicates an error if the internal logic of the SFS10 card is not configured correctly or has a hardware failure. Input LED This LED indicated the presence of a valid SDI video signal on the input. Reference LED Indicated the presence of a valid reference signal on the selected reference input connector (ref-1 or ref-2). Data Error LED This LED indicate two different types of error: - NC (embedded audio) checksum error. - EDH error Connection LED This LED illuminates after the card has initialised. The LED lights for 0.5 seconds every time a connection is made to the card. 32

ppendix 1 Creating Wings and split screens What are wings It s becoming very popular nowadays to have graphics or video as pillar boxes on the left and right side of a video signal, instead of black bars. Shown as a picture, it will look as follows: Wings Wings Using the 2HX10 to create wings The 2HX10 can do just this. To do this, first select Mix_over- at the setting OutputConfig. This will lay the video signal incoming on input over the incoming video signal on input (theoretically resulting in only seeing input ). This is visualised in the next picture, using the same example images as shown in the picture above. Input Input 35

The settings Mix_-start, Mix_-stop, Mix_-start and Mix_-stop will allow you to cut of pieces of each input left and right sides so the underlying pictures becomes visible. This is shown in the next visualisation, to create wings: Mix_-start = 0% Mix_-start = 12,5% Notice that parts of the left and right side of input (the black pillarbox bars) are cut off, the picture is not squeezed in an anamorphic manner. Mix_-stop = 87.5% Mix_-stop = 100% Using the 2HX10 to create split screens Using the same working method as described above to create wings, you can also create split screens. gain you set OutputConfig to Mix_-over- to have both inputs on top of eachother, theoretically resulting in seeing input only as shown below. Input Input 36

Now setting Mix_-start, Mix_-stop, Mix_-start and Mix_-stop to different values will result in a splitscreen as displayed below: Mix_-stop = 100% Mix_-stop = 100% Mix_-start = 50% Mix_-start = 0% Notice again that the left half of picture is cut off, the picture is not squeezed in an anamorphic manner. 37

ppendix 2 Clarification of the 2IX10 and 2HX10 GPI and switch settings The 2IX10/2HX10 hastwo input channels i and i and two output channels o and o. The 2IX10/2HX10 has a lot of settings, which makes the card a powerful monitoring card, but with it also increasing the operating complexity. This document clarifies some of these settings, and the dependencies between them. Setting Output-Config [2x2, 2x1] determines output configuration. - 2x2: Outputs o and o are always different, independent on the possible error status of the input channels. Normal and Switched -mode are explained further on. input output input output 2IX10 2x2 2IX10 2x2 Normal -mode Switched -mode - 2x1: Outputs o and o are always the same. input output input output 2IX10 2x1 2IX10 2x1 Normal -mode Switched -mode Multiple monitoring functions, e.g. Carrier-Det, can be set to monitor the input channel(s), these can be set to the following options: - Off: The functionality for this function is switched off; also the corresponding status of this setting is turned off. - Probe: n error, for this function, is detected (for both input channels) but only given as a status-item. The card will not switch to another channel. - : This error checking function is turned on only for channel. The corresponding status-item will depict the status for both channels, but switching only occurs when channel has an error. - : This error checking function is turned on only for channel. The corresponding status-item will depict the status for both channels, but switching only occurs when channel has an error. - +: This error checking function is turned on for both channels, and the corresponding status-item also depicts the status for both channels. Switching is dependent on the other settings. 38

The corresponding status-items can have the following options: - Ok: when detection is turned off, or the monitoring channels are both all right. - -Error: Indicates that an error is occurring on input channel i. - -Error: Indicates that an error is occurring on input channel i. - -Error: Indicates that an error is occurring on both input channels. ll these active functions (,, +) combined determine the error status of a channel. Subsequently, dependent on the settings: Input-Sel, Switch-ack, and possibly the GPI status, switching of the output channels can occur. Setting Input-Sel [uto, uto-gpi, GPI-Only, Input, Input ] determines which input is selected. Here only the selection for output o is described, output o is then only dependent on the setting Output-Config (described above). - uto: utomatically selects the correct output for output o. Only a switch occurs when only input i has an error (i.e. the functions which are turned on to monitor the channels). Whether a channel switches back is determined by the Switch-ack function (described below). input output input output -Error 2IX10 2x2 2IX10 2x2 Normal -mode Switched -mode input output input output -Error 2IX10 2x2 2IX10 2x2 -Error -Error Normal -mode Normal -mode - uto-gpi: Combines the uto and the GPI-Only mode (see figure below). Channels switch automatically when there is an error on input i and the status for i is Ok. GPI action can cause a switch to channel, even if the channel is in error. When GPI is set to non-latching (level sensitive GPI input), the switchback action ignores the GPI chosen channel, because otherwise it would revert back to channel immediately after an automatic switch to channel upon error. When the GPI is set to latching mode1 or mode 2, the GPI can cause a revert to channel when it is not in error. The figure below tries to capture this behaviour in a chart. 39

GPI change Switchack=On Switchack=ackUp_Fail GPI change and _Error and _Ok and _Ok and _Ok and _Error No (_Error and _Ok) and No GPI switch and No GPI switch - input -Error 2IX10 2x2 output - GPI-Only: GPI change triggers a switch to the other channel. Working GPI contacts dependents on the GPI-mode [Mode- 1_Non-Latch,Mode-1_Latching,Mode-2] setting (described below). - Input : Manual select input channel i, for output o ( Normal -mode). - Input : Manual select input channel i, for output o ( Switched -mode). Setting Switch-ack [Off, On, ackup_fail], only applies when Input-Sel is set to uto or uto-gpi, and determines whether the channels can switch back to their original state after an error had occurred, but the status has returned back input output input output to Ok. Returned to OK Switch-ack Off 2IX10 2x2 Error on -Error 2IX10 2x2 Switched -mode Switched -mode Switched -mode 2IX10 with Input-Sel: uto mode fter an error on input, so channels are switched Switch-ack On Switch-ack ackup_fail input Returned to OK 2IX10 2x2 output Error on input 2IX10 2x2 output -Error Normal -mode Normal -mode input Returned to OK 2IX10 2x2 output Error on input 2IX10 2x2 output -Error Switched -mode Normal -mode - Off: Not allowed to switch back. switch back can still occur when both channels have an error, because channel i has given priority. If this is not desired the monitoring functions should be selected differently, namely to monitor only - On: channels are allowed to switch back when the status returned to Ok. - ackup_fail: channels only switch back when input i has an error and i is Ok. Setting GPI-Mode [Mode-1_Non-Latch,Mode- 1_Latching,Mode-2] determines the functions of the general 40

purpose input (gpi) contacts of the RJ-45 connector of the PL11 back panel. Gpi contact 1 controls the selection, when Input-Sel is set to uto-gpi or GPI-only. The status of the gpi is determined by its connection to the ground (see pin out figure below). This can be done by using a switch or a button. switch has 2 possibilities its contact can be open or closed; when it is closed (connected to the ground) it is active. nd when the contact is open, it is inactive. button only briefly connects the gpi with the ground, and when pressed toggles the state between active and inactive. GPI change, so changing the status of the gpi-contact, triggers a switch, and switches to the other channel. Pin 1 Pin 2 Pin 3 Pin 4 Pin 5 GPI 1 (function dependant on GPI-Mode) GPI 2 ( function dependant on GPI- Mode) GPI 3 (Not used) GPI 4 (Not used) GND Pin 6 GPI out 0 (status of output 1) Pin 7 GPI out 1 (status of output 2) Pin 8 GND - Mode-1_Non- Latch: is level-triggered, should be chosen when a switch is used. When set to the other position triggers a switch. - Mode-1_Latching: is edge-triggered, should be chosen when a button is used. When pressed results in selecting the other channel. - Mode-2: is a version with 2 latching GPI contacts. When GPI_1 is active input channel i is selected, for output o, and when GPI_2 is active input channel i is selected for output o. GPO1 (pin 5) depicts the status of the active channel on output o ( i =0; i =1) Technical schematics of the GPI contacts: 41
