1 Rogers Communication Center Cable Documentation and Identification Policy Written by: David Tom Revision Date: August 5, 2005 Version Number: 0.2 I. Introduction About This Document: This document provides guidance for the labeling and documentation of Audio/Video/Data cabling used within the Rogers Communication Center. Scope: This policy encompasses all copper and optical cable and wiring that are installed by the Computer System Technology Group, Research Technology Support Group and the Media Systems Technology Group. Cabling owned by Computer and Communication Services is excluded. Definition: Abbreviation: RCC Rogers Communication Centre References: ANSI/UL 969 Marking and Labeling Systems
2 II. Products i. Labels A. Shall meet the legibility, defacement, exposure and adhesion requirements of UL 969. B. Shall be preprinted or computer printed type. Hand written labels are not acceptable. The label font must be legible such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier, and a minimum 12-point font size. C. Printing must be protected from the environment. D. Provide vinyl substrate with a white printing area and black print. If cable jacket is white, provide cable label with printing area that is any other color than white, preferably orange or yellow so that the labels are easily distinguishable. E. Shall be flexible vinyl or other substrates to apply easy and flex as cables are bent. F. Shall use aggressive adhesives that stay attached even to the most difficult to adhere to jacketing. III. Execution i. General Guideline All cables must be marked at each end of a conduit, at each end of a passage through a wall or floor, in each hand or manhole, at each corner, and at least every 100 feet of run The label must be attached within 1 ft of where the cable is to be mark. In cases of multi-conductor cables (i.e. bundled cables such as Belden 7710A), both the outer jacket and the individual conductor jackets must be labeled.
3 ii. Label Numbering Cable labels will have the following identification numbering format mark on the label: AAAA BBBB CDDDD AAAA and BBBB are the room designation number where each end of the cable is terminated. If the cable does not terminate in a room, the closest architecture code intersect from the RCC building plan will be used. C is the identification of the type of signal that the cable carries. DDDD is a numerical cable number that is unique for a given AAAA-BBBB-C. Assignment of the room number to AAAA and BBBB will be in sequential ascending order, that is, AAAA will be assigned the lower alphanumeric room number and BBBB will be assigned the higher alphanumeric room number. For example: two co-axial cable designated to transport HD-SDI from Studio A Control Room (RCC232A) to Central Rack/Dub area (RCC230A) would be mark as: 230A-232A-D0001 and 230A-232A-D0002 For cables where each end terminates in the same room (i.e. where AAAA and BBBB are identical), it is permissible for the labels to be shorten to CDDDD C is the identification of the type of signal that the cable carries. DDDD is a numerical cable number that is unique for a given AAAA-BBBB-C. For example: two co-axial cable designated to transport HD-SDI terminate at both end in Studio A Control Room (RCC232A), the label would be mark as: 230A-230A--D0001 and 230A-230A--D0002 or shorten to D0001 and D0002. Multi-conductor cables will have a cable number assigned to each conductor and to the multi-conductor jacket. iii. Additional Guidelines for Video Cables Co-axial cable designated to be able to carry video transmission should not have an end-to-end length of greater than 85 m (278 feet). If a cable length must exceed 85 m, an additional cable label listing the end-to-end length must be place along side each cable numbering label.
4 IV. Documentation i. Wiring List A listing of all cables in Project organized in a systematic fashion matching actual cables. Each cable listing shall contain: a) Cable Number matching that found on the cable labels. b) Drawing Name where cable is reference. c) Cable manufacturer, type, and color. d) Connector Type e) Pin-out detail number. f) Cable Function g) Termination point (including rack location, rack, slot and point) h) Cable length (and a note if it is timed or a critical length) ii. Record Keeping V. Reference i. Signal Type Identification Code D Digital Video E Ethernet (Giga, Fast, 10Gig) V Analog Video R CATV / RF Broadband A Audio F Fibre-channel C Control (i.e. RS232, RS422, GPI) X Reference / House Black G Graphics (VGA/DVI/HDMI) M Triax / Multi conductor camera
