2 HDTV High Definition TV HDTV the high-definition TV Nowadays, everyone s talking about High Definition Television. But what does this new expression in entertainment electronics stand for; what advantages does high-scanning TV bring the user and which devices are necessary for its reception? u Improved picture quality In respect of definition and sharpness, HDTV offers an enormous improvement in picture quality compared to the previous PAL-TV pictures. With sharper contours, more solid colours, a detailed picture and details that until now could not be seen, HDTV is marked above all by its thoroughly live character. Pictures in astonishingly brilliant quality, never before seen in the living room. u Pictures in cinematic format HDTV is a pure 16:9 format which, in contrast to conventional 4:3 transmission, is better adapted to the human field of vision. Black bars during feature films are thus passé. TVs and displays for HDTV To enable you to see at a glance whether a TV, display or projector (with the "HD ready" logo) or a receiver (with the HD TV logo) is suitable for HDTV, the satellite operator Astra, together with leading manufacturers, has developed two seals that confirm the complete HDTV capability of a device. For display, a high-resolution monitor is required, since HDTV cannot be displayed on a conventional TV. TV sets can call themselves HDTV-capable only if they fulfil the minimum requirements of the EICTA (combination of all important equipment manufacturers for entertainment and communication electronics in Europe). The difference between PAL and HDTV The high-scanning TV distinguishes itself by a significantly higher number of picture lines on the TV set. The usual European standard PAL achieves a resolution of 576 lines vertically and 720 lines horizontally. High-definition TV offers resolutions up to five times higher and thus also displays more detail sharpness and plasticity than TV to the usual PAL standard. A HDTV picture can contain up to five times as many pixels, that is, approximately 2 million pixels, compared to a conventional PAL picture with only approximately 400,000 pixels. PAL 576 x p 720 x i 1,080 x 1,920 u Home cinema for the ears too With HDTV, the sound is transmitted in Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Digital Plus a guarantee of unimpeded hearing enjoyment in your home cinema. The home cinema: Using high-performance components such as a DVB receiver, DVD player, Dolby Digital/ DTS sound systems and a large-format TV set or video projector, an acoustic and visual recreation of the cinema atmosphere can be created in your own home. The demands on the quality of such systems are increasing, on the one hand due to developments in the cinema, and on the other hand due to developments in the technical capabilities of entertainment electronics. The HDTV label may be carried by auxiliary devices such as receivers or set-top boxes. To qualify for this, they must be able to receive HDTV signals - irrespective of whether these are transmitted by satellite, cable or antenna. Furthermore the device must be able to transmit a true signal HD via a compatible interface to a "HD ready" display. For this purpose the following criteria must be satisfied: 1. HD receivers must be able as required to receive and process DVB-T, DVB-C and DVB-S signals. 2. HD set-top boxes must support the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 compression standards. 3. The video decoder of the certified device must be able to process image data up to a resolution of 1,280 x 720p and 1,920 x 1,080i, and display it in 16:9 format. 4. Set-top boxes must offer the capability of reproducing data in the 50 Hz frequency range. 5. Devices without a screen (set-top boxes, HD recorders with integrated tuners) must possess a component, DVI or HDMI output. To carry the HD ready logo, a TV set must satisfy the following criteria: 1. The minimum resolution of the display must be 720 physical characters, which is a minimum resolution of 1,021 x 768 image pixels. 2. The set must be able to receive a HD signal via an analogue component input and a digital DVI or HDMI interface. 3. The HD inputs must support the video formats 1,280 x 720 at 50 and 60 Hertz progressive (full-screen images) and 1,920 x 1,080 at 50 and 60 Hertz interfaced (half-screen images). 4. The DVI and HDMI interfaces must support HDCP copy protection. Full HD To carry the "Full-HD" logo, TV sets must display TV and video images with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, which is currently the highest number of pixels used in HDTV transmissions and High-Definition playback. This excellent picture quality represents a resolution five times better than conventional TV displays. 3

3 The complete reception chain from a single source What do I need in order to receive HDTV? Appropriate components are required for reception of the high-quality HDTV transmission standard. A basic prerequisite for reception via satellite is a reception and distribution system capable of processing digital signals as well an HD-ready DVB-S receiver, such as a UFS 910. At Kathrein all current feed systems in the UAS series feature digital support and are designed for the new DVB-S2 transmission standard - it is therefore not necessary to modify the reception system. In addition, the Sat IF distribution must be suitable for the transmission of digital satellite signals. This requirement is met at Kathrein by the current series of EXR xxx switching matrices and multiswitches, as well as by the related VWS xxx SAT IF amplifiers. It is not necessary to replace the distribution components. The new single-cable system and the Kathrein components developed for it is also HD-compatible. Reflector First of all, one must be sure that a satellite transmits signals that the parabolic reflector picks up. The key factor is the footprint of the satellite, which can be imagined as the cone of light emitted by a torch. The further from the centre of the footprint, the larger the reflector must be. If you wish to receive programmes from two satellites using a single parabolic reflector called multifeed reception - you will need two feed systems. Feed system All feed systems (LNBs) from Kathrein are universal feed systems. Irrespective of which programme you wish to view, you will always enjoy good reception. All LNBs from Kathrein are capable of receiving HDTV. Sat IF distribution system Thanks to intelligent matrix distribution technology, a single parabolic antenna can supply a system for an entire apartment building with satellite programmes. The Kathrein system components for Sat IF distribution systems make it possible to create multisubscriber systems, even with a large number of connections with different requirements. All subscribers can hear and view the complete range of radio and TV programmes from the target satellite in perfect quality. Such a satellite reception system prevents the disfiguration of your house and eliminates the uncontrolled sprouting of satellite dishes at windows and on balconies. Multifeed systems can also be implemented these are reception systems where the parabolic dish receives signals from two or three satellites. Receivers You can also rely on Kathrein quality when selecting receivers. Guided first installation When you first switch on your receiver, you will be taken through the menu by a guided first installation, so that you can enjoy high-resolution TV as quickly as possible. User interface The structure of the menu concept is based on logical operating sequences. Naturally the menu can be displayed in many different languages. Kathrein Convenience EPG The integrated Kathrein Convenience EPG is not only a clearly laid out electronic TV guide, but also enables programmes to be copied directly from the related EPG view to the timer. The Kathrein Convenience EPG is a latest-generation Electronic Programme Guide. It provides all the EPG information for around 60 TV channels at no charge, without you having to change channel, and also offers schedule information up to a week ahead (depending on programme provider). Pre-programmed channel list The receiver is supplied with a factory preprogrammed channel list. The channels available on the satellites and transponders are subject to continual change by the broadcasters. Software download New software is generally made available using two media. One medium is the satellite; the other is the homepage (service software and download receiver). Furthermore, the receivers have a switch at the back which can isolate the receiver completely from the mains. LINUX-based All the receivers listed here are based on the LINUX operating system. Extensive connections The HDMI interface allows the receiver to be connected to a flat-screen TV set. In addition, the receiver offers the following connections for transmission of the TV picture: YPbPr connection, composite video and Scart connections. Via the optical audio output, the receiver can feed the Dolby Digital data stream AC 3 to a Dolby Digital system. The USB interface allows software updates to be loaded to the receiver and external hard disks to be connected for recording (UFS 910). All HDTV receivers are also suitable for reception of both high-definition and conventional TV. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) The HDMI connection transmits the complete bandwidth (up to 5 Gbit/s) of the known digital video and audio data.
