For instance, OSRAM was swift to embrace such innovative technologies as LEDs and OLEDs, and these now generate more than 20% of the company's sales. For OSRAM, the acquisition of Traunreut-based Siteco Lighting GmbH is one more chapter in an ongoing success story. Siteco concentrates on luminaires and lighting systems, operating in such sectors as urban infrastructure, i.e. public and commercial buildings, roads, tunnels, airports and sports stadiums. By acquiring the company, OSRAM is addressing this important market. Being a leading component manufacturer, this move will also enable it to further expand its competence as a solutions provider. After all, luminaires and light systems already account for the majority of the global light market today. This applies to conventional energy-saving lighting technology and most especially to LED-based luminaires and systems, the domain in which the greatest growth can be expected. What's more, the product range and applications covered by Siteco's portfolio ideally complement the offerings of the joint venture established by OSRAM and Traxon Technologies in More information plus examples of interesting Siteco projects will be presented in the coming issues of light sphere. High-quality products with long-term benefits and an excellent price-to-performance ratio are thought to be the foundations of success. A product portfolio should cover all the demands placed on technical lighting and be based on an understanding of the market, the applications and of customer needs. Advanced (light) technologies are another key factor and must be provided together with a knowledge of engineering and system integration. These are all core competencies of both OSRAM and Siteco. Ultimately, however, partnerships built on mutual respect are the mainstay of success, as expressed in the slogan people make the difference. 3 Optimised for greater user benefits HCI-T with PTi or PT-FIT a system with optimum properties The finest light quality Metal halide lamps have established themselves in professional lighting applications, particularly in shop lighting. This is thanks in part to the advancements of recent decades which saw OSRAM improving the efficiency, colour rendering properties, colour stability and service life of the technology. The transition from HQI metal halide lamps with quartz burner to HCI lamps with ceramic burner in the mid-1990s was a quantum leap in this respect. OSRAM brought about a jump in luminous efficacy when it introduced its POWERBALL technology, replacing the cylindrical burner with a round version. Fig. 1. Indeed, the high light quality of HCI lamps promote success in the fashion sector, emitting brilliant light which enhances products and colours with an emotive impact (Fig. 1). Meanwhile, the long average service life of 12,000 h makes for good costefficiency. Improving on proven successes Thanks to optimised production processes, the POWERBALL HCI-T lamp now comes with an extended service life of 15,000 h when operated on POWERTRONIC PTi and PT-FIT electronic control gear. Due to the reliability of this system OSRAM offer a new System+ Guarantee 5+2 when lamp and control gear are used together, five years guarantee on POWERTRONIC PTi and PT-FIT electronic control gear plus a two-year guarantee on HCI-T lamps twice as long as the standard guarantee period for these lamps (Fig. 2). The System+ Guarantee 5+2 is also given on the new POWERTRONIC PTi SNAP control gear, which is designed for operating 35 W and 70 W HID lamps. Thanks to their coded ST18 plugs and GST18 bases, the integrated connectors make for rapid, errorfree mains and luminaire connection. The lock on the housing permits standard-compliant clamping of the cables. With its outstanding thermal properties and an average service life of 40,000 h at tc max, PTi SNAP is suitable for high-end highlighting and general lighting in applications such as shops, galleries, museums and airports. Light is an important theatrical tool for triggering the shopping urge. Which is why the Kuwait Avenues Mall with a sales area of 206,000 m 2 and the 360 Mall with 82,000 m 2 are both brilliantly illuminated (Figs. 1 and 2). Among other things, the lighting is based on 7,000 POWERTRONIC PTi 70 W and 150 W electronic control gear units the S version for installation in lumi naires and the I version with cable clamp which are used to operate 3,000 warm-white and neutral-white POWERSTAR HQI-TS Excellence 70 W and 150 W metal halide lamps, along with 70 W and 150 W HCI-T lamps with colour appearance 830. Al Sabah General Electrical Establishment, a long-standing OSRAM customer in Kuwait, installed the lighting and highly commends the superior quality of the OSRAM products. The POWERSTAR HQI-TS Excellence lamps provide the general lighting and highlighting in various shops as well as in the central Food Court. The HCI-T lamps are used for supplementary spotlighting. The result is a winning combination with HCI-T lamps ensuring good colour rendering properties and a uniform colour appearance and HQI-TS Excellence quartz lamps providing wide-area light. Still a front-runner Innovation, high quality and a complete product portfolio have helped OSRAM to maintain its leading market position in the field of quartz technology over the years. The double-ended POWERSTAR HQI-TS Excellence (Fig. 3) metal halide lamp is a particularly remarkable product which excels in a diverse range of applications thanks to its outstanding tech nical features. Its uses range from general indoor lighting, such as sales rooms, offices or industrial buildings including airports, warehouses and exhibition halls to object and building illumination in the outdoor sector. This wide variety of applications demonstrates that the 4

5 trend towards ceramic metal halide lamps is not a one-way street. The new, unique and compact design of the HQI-TS Excellence boosts the luminous flux to 15% more than that of a conventional double-ended metal halide lamp with quartz burner and increases the average service life to 12,000 h. Eliminating the exhaust tube has optimised the light distribution, improving the luminaire efficiency even further. This extends the service life of HQI and HCI lamps by up to 30% while also reducing the luminous flux decline. In combination with POWERTRONIC ECG, HQI-TS Excellence lamps are also capable of achieving an average service life in excess of 15,000 h. As an added bonus, OSRAM offers the System+ Guarantee on this package; five years on the ECG and one year on the lamp. The guarantee can be claimed upon the first ECG failure as a result of a material or manufacturing defect. 6 Inspiration through light solutions OSRAM's sensational new showroom in Milan Fig. 1. With its variable colours, this picture is an attractive eye-catcher in the living area. It is made up of MESH-RGB, an extremely flexible LED system module from Traxon, and controlled via the multifunctional DALI Professional Touch Panel Worlds of light Two light events attracted visitors from the lighting industry to Milan in April 2011: first there was the Euroluce traditionally held during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and then there was the opening of the new OSRAM showroom. Covering a total area of 330 m² and spread 6 across two floors, the showroom has created a platform for creative light design and communication a place in which light can be experienced in all its fascinating facets. Presenting innovative solutions, technologies and applications, the OSRAM showroom will be a source of inspiration for light designers, architects and end users. The focus will mainly be on LEDs, OLEDs and light solutions from Traxon & e:ecue, a leading supplier of LED lighting systems, as well as light management systems (LMS). Coloured highlights are provided by 20 RGB spots from Traxon. Fantastical lighting effects entice visitors to linger in the exclusively designed living areas (Fig. 1 and 2). The shimmering colours of the suspended LED cylinders are a stunning sight on the staircase, guiding visitors to the next level (Fig. 3). Traxon Boards in various designs can be used to present both light scenes and media content, such as high-definition videos or advertising messages. Fig. 3. 8 Thoroughly inviting The upper storey contains a complete model apartment with living area, terrace, bedroom and bathroom. GlassiLed, a net of white LED light points that create exciting effects, predominates on the entire floor. The Airabesc designer luminaire, designed by Dietmar Fissl from 2DoDesign, is an eye-catching feature in the entrance (Fig. 4). Like the OLEDs themselves, the pendant luminaire has an extremely delicate look with its organic-flowing form. The design impressed the jury of the red dot award 2011, which awarded it one of the coveted prizes in the Product Design category. In the living area, the scene is set by the MESH-RGB system from Traxon, a highly flexible, semi-transparent LED module for striking decorative effects (Fig. 1). The multifunctional DALI Professional Touch Panel can be used to control different light sources and save various light scenarios. The light on the terrace comes from the LINEARlight Flex Protect LED strip module, which is suitable for outdoor use thanks to its protection rating of IP67. The Traxon MIRROR PANEL is the most intriguing feature in the bedroom. When switched off, it looks just like an ordinary mirror, but switched on, the panel is a fascinating sight with its merging interplay of coloured light. Fig. 4. In combination with the Touch Panel, it optimises both energy efficiency and flexibility. The winning features of the DALI Professional Touch Panel include its simple operation the possibility of directly connecting up to 256 ECG units makes it possible to control different lamps and LEDs, and to create custom lighting scenarios. Individual scenes, the light solution for a room, or the lighting of an entire building can easily be configured and retrieved by simply pressing the Touch Panel. For maximum flexibility, all light groups and scenes can be modified or completely redesigned via the software at any time without rewiring. What's more, when used in combination with the DALI PROFESSIONAL light management system, daylight and occupancy sensors can be used to increase the energy efficiency of the entire system. Showcasing a wide array of innovative solutions based on LEDs, OLEDs and light management systems, the OSRAM showroom in Milan is an ideal place to give visitors an impression of the exciting and inspiring light of the future. 9 The Building KnowLEDge Tour combined a product exhibition covering the fields of Shop, Office and Hospitality with interesting presentations a perfect formula for success, as the exceptionally positive response showed A Europe-wide success story The Building KnowLEDge Tour celebrates its debut OSRAM and Siemens went on the road together for the first time with the Building KnowLEDge Tour. Held between February and May 2011 at nine venues in Germany, this series of events provided electrical contractors, wholesalers, lighting designers, specifiers and architects with comprehensive information on the subject of LEDs and intelligent building management. Attracting a total of more than 3,500 participants, the tour clearly showed that there was a great demand for information on the topics covered. Indeed, the response to the BuildingKnowLEDge Tour was overwhelming across Europe. Well-attended presentations in Utrecht, Brussels, Prague, Vienna, Milan, Zurich, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona not only attest to the global orientation of Siemens and OSRAM but also vouch for the appeal of the topics on offer. In a product exhibition covering the Shop, Office and Hospitality segments, OSRAM displayed nine application islands, and Siemens three. More than 50 members of staff were on hand for questions and in-depth discussions. The exhibition was accompanied by a series of presentations: the four expert forums on the basics of LEDs, light control with LEDs, light planning with LEDs, and intelligent building automation were followed by a lively question-and-answer session which saw a great deal of visitor participation. The walk-in LED Cube with more than 1,500 LED products proved to be the highlight at every event, giving the participants the opportunity to experience LEDs and light control in practical use. A 10-minute show took every visitor on a fascinating journey through the sensory world of OSRAM, enabling them to smell, taste, see, hear and touch light. The in-depth dialogue between participants and the employees of Siemens and OSRAM at all the events was an added bonus for all parties concerned, not only benefitting visitors, but supplying the organisers with first-hand information on application-related needs. All in all, the Building KnowLEDge Tour was very well received indeed, the overall response to the event was excellent, with more than 95% of all guests giving a rating of very good or good. And the success story continues: for this high-calibre informative event will be moving on to Copenhagen, Stockholm and Warsaw in August and September It will also be making an appearance at LUXLIVE 2011 exhibition in Londons famous Earls Court exhibition centre on 9th and 10th November. 9

Meanwhile, there is a rising demand for even greater energy efficiency and lighting solutions with longer maintenance intervals. Energy is easily and unnecessarily wasted, especially in places like office corridors or factory buildings that are not permanently occupied (Fig. 1). For reasons of safety or comfort, however, it is often desirable to have a certain minimum brightness level in such areas, even when no-one is present. Up to now, the only solution for requirements of this kind was dimmable lighting in combination with occupancy detectors. Fig. 2. This QUICKTRONIC device makes it possible to combine the best properties of fluorescent lamps and LED systems. The new ECG is capable of operating both a 28 W or 35 W T5 lamp and LEDs optionally with 350 ma constant current or 24 V constant voltage making it possible to switch back and forth between the two lamp types as and when necessary (Fig. 2). In this way, the burning hours are spread over the two light sources, thereby extending the service life of both the T5 lamp and the LEDs, each of which is operated at the most efficient working point of the respective lamp. When no-one is present, switching to the LED solution permits very simple

Conversely, when the room is occupied, the T5 lamps can be used again to provide the full brightness level in an extremely efficient and economical manner. Table 1 illustrates the benefit of this changeover on the basis of a comparison of QUICKTRONIC QTi-DP control gear and conventional, dimmable T5 lighting systems with HE 28 W or 35 W T5 lamps at a brightness level of roughly 10%. The QTi-DP is based on the QTi GII platform and therefore offers similar properties, such as a service life of up to 100,000 h at Tc = 65 C and an unlimited number of switching cycles. QTi DUAL POWER QTi-DP 1x28/35/LED control gear operates fluorescent lamps and LEDs together in a single luminaire evident in round-the-clock lighting. Combinations of this kind offer advantages in a wide range of applications, for instance when creating additional highlights with coloured LEDs to make luminaires, stairwells or even glass lifts glow in the corporate design colours. Similarly, the T5 lamps can provide the general lighting in hotels or hospitals, while the LEDs assume the function of a reading lamp for example, if a patient in the next bed wants to sleep. Very simple QTi DUAL POWER QTi-DP 1x28/35/ LED control gear uses a simple, mains-voltage signal for control. It permits load-free switching between LEDs and fluorescent lamp, and also linking to conventional motion detec- tors with switching output, LMS components, wall-mounted switches, time-controlled relays, etc. (Fig. 3). The impressive simplicity of the QTi-DP makes it ideal for retrofitting in lighting installations. As no additional lines are needed, for instance for a DALI signal, the existing wiring can even be used. The simple installation of a motion/occupancy detector in a luminaire permits the QTi-DP to control additional luminaires. 12 Dedicated to the god of light OSRAM takes an efficient approach to office lighting with APOLLON II Obvious elegance Good office lighting not only creates a pleasant atmosphere at the workplace, but also boosts staff performance. To achieve the desired effect, standards must be met in terms of ergonomics and light quality, while also ensuring energy efficiency. Named in honour of the god of light in Greek and Roman mythology, the APOLLON II luminaire from OSRAM is ideally equipped to meet these wide-ranging demands. Owing to its timeless, minimalistic design, this luminaire not only enhances modern interiors, but also makes a striking design feature in well-preserved old buildings. When installed, the APOLLON II looks like a slim, elegant disc floating in space (Fig. 1). Available in numerous designs as individual luminaires or continuous lighting strips, for ceiling mounting or pendant installation, and with a variety of reflectors this product can cover a diverse range of applications (Figs. 2 and 3). The APOLLON II hence makes a superb adornment in single and open-plan offices, conference rooms or reception areas. This luminaire family complies with all the common standards, such as DIN EN or Germany's ENEV 2009 and is equally suitable for providing pleasant and efficient illumination in classrooms and seminar rooms, as well as canteens. Flexibility from within A product that caters to all needs, the APOLLON II luminaire is available in a BASIC and a PRO version (Table). In the BASIC version, the slim luminaire body made of brushed aluminium accommodates two efficient High Efficiency 28 W T5 fluorescent tubes with a luminous efficacy of 105 lm/w. The PRO version is equipped with QTi DALI DIM control gear so that the user can also select the High Output 54 W tube types with high luminous intensity and a luminous flux of 5,000 lm. In an open-plan office, for example, this choice of different lamps means that a single luminaire can be used in two different ways: to provide an illuminance of 500 lx in the work area in compliance with DIN EN , Fig. 2. As an individual luminaire or a continuous lighting strip, ceiling-mounted or pendant, the APOLLON II enhances not only any office, but also conference rooms, classrooms and seminar rooms or canteens and to emit 300 lx in the moving zones or the surrounding area. This choice of lamps is a great boon in the event of a change of occupancy, too, since the illuminance in the room can easily be adapted to the visual requirements involved. With its indirect light component, the pendant version of the APOLLON II additionally illuminates the ceiling, creating a pleasant room atmosphere. Exemplary lighting engineering The APOLLON II BASIC is equipped with a louvre designed for computer workplaces and high-quality QUICKTRONIC QTP5 control gear from OSRAM. The high-end APOLLON II PRO, on the other hand, boasts a high-gloss aluminium louvre made of MIRO- SILVER. This not only makes for pleasant, ergonomic working light, but also gives the luminaire an excellent light output ratio of up to 95% resulting in a high energy efficiency. And in operational terms, the APOLLON II has much to commend it: for instance, a sophisticated stack effect makes for outstanding heat management. At an ambient temperature of 25 C, the T5 lamps can hence operate exactly at their working point of 35 C and attain their maximum luminous flux. The lighting engineering properties of the APOLLON II PRO are also outstanding. With a UGR value of 16, it has the best glare rating according to DIN EN What's more, with its uniform light distribution, it is ideal for providing twin workplaces with glare-free illumination from a single luminaire. Focus on easy installation The APOLLON II has been thoughtfully designed down to the very last detail and, with its quick and simple installation, it is a blessing for the fitter, too. The end caps and connecting pieces can be fitted without tools. The screw/plug combination supplied is simply inserted into the corresponding mounts and pressed tight and hey presto! The releasable plug-in terminal is swung out of the profile to connect the cables, making it particularly accessible. Luminaire solution in a class of its own Thanks to a modular system design and cost-optimised production processes, the versatile APOLLON II operate for an average of 50,000 h. All in all, the APOLLON II minimises operating costs, makes an attractive architectural design element and provides ergonomic working light. MULTIeco is suitable for installation in and on luminaires, for ceiling mounting, for use as original equipment and for retrofitting, too. The controller comes in DALI, 1 10 V and switching versions. 15 colour, and as regards their suitability for use as original equipment or for retrofitting. All controllers and sensors can be flexibly interconnected thanks to the modular 4P4C connectors. Sights set on resource conservation The exceptionally variable MULTIeco system also sets standards in terms of energy efficiency. New building guidelines for the improvement of energy efficiency, such as Germany's ENEV 2009, are continually posing new challenges for operators. Meanwhile, constantly spiralling energy prices are creating a growing need for energy-saving devices and systems in lighting installations. The MULTIeco light control system can deliver on demands like these, boasting an energy-saving potential of up to 70% in dimmable light solutions (Fig. 2) compared to conventional, switched lighting systems. This performance is based on intelligent constant-light control in combination with occupancy detection. In this way, optimum use is made of the available daylight, and the occupancy function automatically switches the lighting off when there is no-one in the room. So, a MULTIeco system solution improves not only energy efficiency, but comfort and convenience, too. Functionality has the edge The DIP switch of the compact controllers can be used to set 14 different operating modes, providing the user with a lighting solution tailored to his individual needs. The possibilities range from fully automatic constantlight control with occupancy function for the office sector to time-controlled luminous flux reduction with advance shut-off warning for stairwells and corridors. Depending on requirements, daylight and occupancy sensors (Fig. 3) can be coupled and jointly connected to a controller two sensors per controller are permissible. In this case, the controller automatically calculates the mean of the two brightness values measured by the daylight sensors, thereby achieving homogeneous light distribution of the lighting controlled via the MULTIeco system. Should two sensors be insufficient to cover the complete detection area, it is also possible to interconnect up to four controllers, and thus up to eight sensors. Geared to the future All controllers of the MULTIeco system i.e. the DALI, 1 10 V and switching versions have an integrated relay that completely disconnects the connected luminaire from the mains when it is switched off either fully automa- Fig. 4. This reduces the stand-by power consumption of the system to less than 0.5 W. 16 Light plays a key role in sales psychology. After all, be it clothes, food or any other products: a good presentation boosts sales. With a comprehensive portfolio of luminaires, lamps and light management systems, OSRAM presented a diverse range of shop lighting products at Euroshop 2011, the leading exhibition in Düsseldorf. In the shop lighting sector, LED solutions are considered to be an excellent alternative and complement to conventional technologies. After all, the amount of light can be distributed over compact units which can be flexibly adapted to cater to the respective design specifications, the application and the functionality involved. And, not to be outdone, the new members of the LEDVANCE luminaire family also showcased their potential at the trade fair: with a colour rendering index of over 90, LEDVANCE Powerspot and LEDVANCE Spotlight are ideal for shop lighting.
