1 RIPPLE TANK - projection, with strobe & kit DESCRIPTION: Cat: SW projection type with stroboscope, rippler & kit. The images created by IEC Ripple Tank Projection type are viewed from the side instead of on the table top and is more convenient in the classroom. This Ripple Tank is complete with an inbuilt Stroboscope that provides stationary or slow moving images on the bright screen. The strobe can be switched to synchronise with the ripples or can be switched to be controlled independently. The IEC Projection Ripple Tank collapses into a flat pack for easy storage and is very easy and very quick to set up for operation. A Ripple Tank is used to investigate wave motion in a shallow trough of water to understand how various types of waves behave. The basic principles which apply to the water waves in the ripple tank also apply to light, sound and radio waves. SW ripple tank & screen To assemble the IEC system from the Flat Pack takes a few seconds. Simply lift two panels at the same time and engage one to the other. Tools are not required. When finished, disengage the panels and allow the system to collapse back to the flat pack for easy storage. This image shows the Water Tray resting on the top frame. It is lifted off for emptying and cleaning. Locates into centre of top frame. The unit consists of: 1x. Assembly of top frame, legs, angled mirror tray and front screen all collapsing into a slim flat pack. Screen is held vertical by magnetic strip. 1x Removable water tray with glass bottom and sloping beaches. For experiments, a water depth of about 3 to 4mm is sufficient. When inverted, this tray fits into the flat pack mentioned above. The image above shows it resting on top frame. It normally locates in the centre of the frame. 1x Ripple Maker unit to control ripple frequency and to run the Stroboscope. 1x Stroboscope lamp that mounts over the centre point of the Water Tray. 1x Stainless steel support rod for the Stroboscope lamp. Cable to run the Stroboscope is fixed to the rod. 1x set of single, double and straight line ripplers to fix to the Ripple Maker. 1x. Set of barriers. 2x angles with slits, 1x part circle shape and 1x parabolic shape to place in the water to interrupt ripples and to demonstrate principles of wave motion, reflection and refraction. Important features: The IEC unit has a full size projection screen approx 330mm square for large clear images. The whole glass area of the Water Tray is projected on to the screen. Most other brands of tanks do not project the whole glass area. The IEC unit, after lifting out the Water Tray, drying it and slipping it under the top frame, everything collapses into the compact Flat Pack for easy transporting and for most efficient shelf storage. The projection screen is not glass, therefore it cannot be shattered. This design is safer with children in classroom. The bright mirror is recessed against damage and is normally plastic.. but glass mirror is optional. The Water Tray is simply lifted out of the top frame for filling, emptying or cleaning. It is made from black ABS but the clear bottom face is glass for longest life without scratches. From the Flat Pack, when the mirror tray is lifted together with the top frame, the unit automatically begins to stand up from the bench. 2

The IEC unit saves time in the classroom: It takes about 5 seconds to raise and lock the trays and maybe another 20 seconds to fit the support rod, the Stroboscope, the Water Tray and click the Ripple Maker into place. You are in action in very short time. The IEC Ripple Tank runs on the safe voltage of 12V, either AC or DC. The Ripple Maker can accept a plug from a standard 12V.AC. plug pak or it can be powered through 4mm sockets from a school AC or DC power supply. Current requirement is approx 0.5 to 0.7 amps. Without using tools or clamps, the IEC Ripple Maker is firmly magnetically attached to the rear edge of the top frame. It can be adjusted for height and side to side straightness by the 2 adjustment screws provided. The tips of the dippers should be JUST touching the water. For best results, do not insert dippers more than 1 to 2mm into the water. Ripple Maker: shows the power connections and controls. Fixes to the top frame magnetically. Ripplers attach by the red knob at the front. Stroboscope Light: Is supported over the Water Tray and very bright light flashes with the ripple movement to give either stationary or moving image on the vertical screen. The Ripple Maker controls are: _ Power ON/OFF switch at the rear face of the housing. _ Rippler frequency: A knob on the upper face adjusts the rippler frequency. _ Strobe frequency: A knob on the upper face adjusts the Strobe flash freq. _ Strobe Synch switch: When synch is selected, the strobe flashes exactly at the same frequency as the rippler. Image is stationary and the rippler knob controls both ripples and strobe. When synch not selected, the rippler and the strobe frequencies are controlled separately. The connections are simple. 12V.AC or DC power into the rear of the Ripple Maker and one plug and cable to the Strobe light. The Strobe Light runs almost cold and there are no moving parts and nothing to wear out or be damaged by students. The Strobe light can easily be moved to obtain the best position so the light completely covers the glass bottom of the Water Tray. 3

4 features.. cont d: The tank is very easy to carry from place to place by holding at the side pivot points of the frame members. The Water Tray has a deep recess design to avoid sloshing water when carrying it to and from a sink. Without using tools or clamps, the IEC Ripple Maker is clicked to the rear edge of the top frame by 2x strong magnets. It can be adjusted for height and side to side straightness by the 2 adjustment screws provided. The tips of the dippers should be JUST touching the water. For best results, do not insert dippers more than 1 to 2mm into the water. Picture shows a typical assembly with Ripple Maker and Strobe in their normal correct positions. The slim Strobe support from the rear corner provides excellent access to the Water Tray without nuisance supports. Note the large size of the projection screen. 4
