1 The business environment is constantly evolving, as depicted by the world s move from an industrial to an information society. Most of the present day work force is focused with the creation, processing, and distribution of information. Another change is the expansion of the business marketplace. Even twenty years ago, the reach of a business extended no further than the local city, state, or opportunities that are needed in order to remain competitive have expanded into the international arena. Businesses from the United States hoping to set up international operations overnight in host countries could be in for a rude awakening. In some countries it can take months for what may be considered simple transactions, such as getting data equipment on site or telephone lines installed. This stresses the importance of a vendor who knows the country and its culture thoroughly, a vendor like AT&T. Through its direct sales force and a network of speciallytrained distributors in more than 70 countries, AT&T can help ABC Company avoid the pitfalls that often plague businesses when entering unfamiliar territory. Most recently, AT&T has entered the market place in France and China with. If ABC Company has international communications requirements, whether small or large, or involving domestic and/or international locations, AT&T can offer the same quality and support that our customers have come to expect within the United States. AT&T recognizes that communications are a vital part of operating any business, and as such, AT&T products, including Definity Generic 3, have been designed to also satisfy international requirements. This section examines some of the capabilities AT&T can provide through its broad range of products and services, whether they are used to call the international marketplace or to serve locations outside the United States. s world class features offer capabilities to meet the needs of communicating with ABC Company locations or other businesses outside the United States. One of these features is World Class Routing (WCR), which allows flexible call routing for any type of dialing plan, using ARS/AAR for both international and domestic (United States) dialing plans. 2 World Automatic Alternate Routing (AAR) M-to-N digit conversion (ARS and AAR) Support for Worldwide Standards When used for ABC Company locations outside the United States, Definity Generic 3 supports a maximum of 25,000 lines, providing features that allow for differences in telecommunications standards around the world. This permits ABC Company to use in countries other than the United States. The following features allow the system to be configured to conform with local standards: Added Restriction Checks allows ABC Company to block the connection of public network trunks to other public network trunks. Administrable Call Progress Tones allows ABC Company to select the appropriate dial tone, busy tone, ring back, reorder, and other tones. Administrable Ring Cadence allows ABC Company to select the appropriate ring cadence for analog voice terminals. Administrable Display Language allows ABC Company to select the language in which station users stored messages will be displayed. Current choices include English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and a custom language using the Latin character set. Administrable Transmission allows ABC Company to select the appropriate transmission requirements that conform to local standards. Administrable Timers support varied international trunk interface requirements, allowing ABC Company to change to the appropriate timing. Attendant Serial Calling enables the attendant to transfer trunk calls returned to the attendant position once the called party has hung up, allowing the attendant to transfer the call to another party. Disconnect Supervision avoids having switch resources used indefinitely when far-end central office disconnect supervision is not provided. s Disconnect Supervision removes resources used on a call and makes them available for servicing new calls at call completion. International Toll/Code Restriction allows ABC Company to restrict certain types of calls when the local numbering plan does not match the North American Numbering Plan. Call Detail Recording (CDR) enhancements for periodic pulse metering provides Periodic Pulse Metering (PPM) counts in the CDR output record, using the pulses transmitted over trunk lines from the serving CO to determine call charges. 3 T1/E1 Access and Conversion allows simultaneous connection to both T1 (1.544 Mbps) and E1 (2.048 Mbps) facilities. The Universal DS1 (UDS1) is used for ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI) and can optionally be used to implement a Digital Multiplexed Interface (DMI) Bit-Oriented Signaling (BOS) interface, which supports a Mbps facility. ISDN Primary Rate Interface Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Primary Rate Interface (PRI) delivers ISDN service to for high-speed connectivity to the public switched telephone network and to other switches in a private or public network. This interface can also be used to connect to host computers. ISDN PRI provides kbps channels arranged in the standard of 30 B plus D. That is, the 32 channels are divided into 30 bearer (B) channels at 64 kbps for information transmission, one signaling (D) channel at 64 kbps for control and signaling, and the last channel is used for framing. also supports ISDN PRI using the T1 format, which provides 23 B plus D according to the North American ISDN standard. ISDN Basic Rate Interface Version 4 introduces the World Class Basic Rate Interface (BRI) U Interface which allows the system to support non-voice applications, such as data and video. This circuit pack works with the 8500-series ISDN terminals with an NT1 and is available in the United States and international markets based on type approval. Country Specific Needs AT&T is continually implementing communications features and functions on a country-by-country basis as the specific requirements are satisfied for the individual country, thereby allowing entrance to the country s marketplace. Enhancements provided on Version 4 has allowed AT&T to enter France and China. Global Enhancements has the following enhancements for global use: Connectivity to Lines and Trunks Postal Telephone and Telegraph (PTT) Central Office (CO) trunks, which are used between countries and within a country outside the United States. 4 24 channel ISDN PRI, 24 channel International Core (IC) ISDN PRI, 32 channel ISDN PRI. Polarity reversed signaling on loop-start CO trunks. Internal Switch Operations English and Italian language, visually impaired attendant service CentreVu Call Management System (CMS) compatibility Enhanced Distributed Communications System (EDCS), which provides: Remote calling and called-party restriction checking Administrable local and remote Direct Inward Dialing (DID) application of intercept treatment Display called line status for an attendant Intrusion from an attendant Multi-frequency compelled (MFC) for use with digital facilities Administrable Selection of Features Terminal display languages. Five different tone plans, and six custom administrable tones in a tone plan. Country specific tone plans for the United States, Australia, Japan, Italy, Belgium, Russia, Spain, and the United Kingdom (UK); and customization for other countries. Transmission, conference loss, and tone loss plans. Ringing cadences. Pulse Position Metering (PPM) of 50 Hz, 12 Hz, or 16 khz. A-law or µ-law (mu-law) companding. ISDN and non-isdn digital protocols. Bit-oriented protocols. Some circuit pack impedances and gain and loss characteristics. DS1 (at Mbps) and European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Rate 1 (CEPT-1) (at Mbps) protocol interface DS1 ports can be administered to convert DS1 framing, signaling, line coding, and companding to that required on CEPT-1 trunks, and vice versa. 5 Global Circuit Packs The following global circuit packs are used for trunks, lines, and tones outside the United States: DID and Direct Inward and Outward Dialing (DIOD) analog trunks CO analog trunks Loop-start and ground-start analog CO trunks Tie trunks Auxiliary trunks Digital trunks Analog and digital station lines (2- and 4-wire) Tone Clock and Tone Detector Speech Synthesizer Other Global Features In addition, the following features may also be available for ABC Company s use: DID Busy Back A DID trunk interface will provide a busy back signal toward the CO to prevent seizure by the CO. The signal comprises removal of DC potential from the negative lead or disconnection of both sides of the trunk. A supervisory alarm will be activated during application of this signal. Autoguard Autoguard (with the CO trunk circuit pack) prevents repeated seizure (by the switch) of a defective trunk. This feature may be enabled or disabled by ABC Company s System Administrator. The default is ON. Transit Tie Trunk Tie trunk interfaces will be assigned as terminal if the tie trunk terminates on the switch or transit if it goes through the switch to another destination. The transmission plan will distinguish between terminal and transit connections and apply appropriate loss levels. Power can be powered with either 110/208/220V AC (50/60 Hz) or -48V DC power. When commercial AC power is not available, the system will operate off DC power supplied by battery reserve. Lucent Technologies An AT&T Company Page 5

6 Definity AUDIX Voice Messaging System AT&T offers Definity AUDIX system in the same countries as Definity Generic 3, and continues to develop a wide variety of bilingual capabilities on it. Definity AUDIX is ideal for international use since it is embedded within the system hardware, therefore separate review and approval by overseas government agencies for compliance with electrical requirements and other technical specifications are often not required.
