1 Date August Library Rules NLS Students will recognize and identify the rules of the library. Activities & Students will explain library rules and book care. Book Care NLS Students will learn the proper way to take care of their library books. Book Location Shelving order Sections NLS Students will recognize that the books are placed on the shelves in alphabetical order according to the author s last name. Students will identify various sections of the library. September Literature Genres Book Parts Cover Spine Author Illustrator Table of Contents Glossary Title page Copyright page RL 5.9 NLS Students will recognize the various genres, and be able to identify the genre of a book. Students will identify the parts of a book and describe the importance of those parts. in small group activities. Biographies NLS Students will recognize biographies and recall facts from a biography. Students will recall important facts from a biography. AR Tests for comprehension Theme of a Story RL.5.2 Students will determine a theme of a story, including how characters in a story respond to challenges. Large Group Discussion Reference Tools Encyclopedias Newspapers RL.5.4 (c) Students will use reference materials to locate information.

If students read two or more of the nominees, they can vote for the winner in the spring. Worksheet on beginning, middle, and end of a story. November Usborne Book Fair Humanity in the Arts Cultures: Similarities and Differences Students will describe or explain how drama has been a part of cultures and periods throughout history. (Focus: Native American culture) Native American symbols AR Tests Native American Appalachian Students will describe how drama fulfills a variety of purposes. [Focus: Purposes: Ceremonial, Recreational, Expressive] Reference Tools KYVL Library Card Catalog Dewey Decimal System RL 5.4 (c) Students will use reference materials to locate information.

[Focus: Purposes: Ceremonial, Recreational, Expressive] AR Tests Native American symbols January Award Winning books Caldecott Medal Newbery Award Medal NLS Students will describe how folktales can give us a lot of information about a culture. Students will discuss the books that have won the Caldecott and Newbery awards, and identify books on the library shelf that have previously won the award. Student observation and participation. Humanity in the Arts Cultures Students will describe or explain how drama/storytelling has been a part of cultures and periods throughout history. Student participation. Purposes for Creating in the Arts Ceremonial Recreational Emotional PS 1.12 Students will describe or explain how music fulfills a variety of purposes. [Focus: Purposes: Ceremonial stories created or performed for rituals or celebrations, Recreational stories for entertainment; and Emotional stories created to share emotions]. Dewey Decimal System NLS Students will use call numbers to locate a section of the library. Large and small group activities. using Dewey Decimal Ducks.
5 Month February Humanity in the Arts Cultures: Similarities and Differences Appalachian West African Colonial American Students will describe how storytelling has been a part of cultures and periods throughout history. [Focus: Cultures: Appalachian, West African cultures]. Similarities and differences in the use of drama and the use of elements of drama among cultures. Activities and AR Tests Elements of Drama Beginning, Middle and End Script Character Setting Dialogue Story line (plot) Students will discuss the elements of drama and participate in Reader s Theatre to demonstrate the elements. Groups of students will perform a short play for the class. Participation in Reader s Theatre in small groups and as a whole class. March Scholastic Book Fair Elements of Drama Beginning, Middle and End Script Character Setting Dialogue Story line (plot) Students will discuss the elements of drama and participate in Reader s Theatre to demonstrate the elements. Groups of students will perform a short play for the class. Participation in Reader s Theatre in small groups and as a whole class. Monologue/Dialogue PS 1.12 Students will discuss difference between monologue/dialogue.

Worksheet booklet on the Dewey Decimal System. Large group activity. May Kentucky Derby History Traditions Importance to KY NLS Students will discuss the Kentucky Derby, and discuss the importance of the Derby to Kentucky.. Worksheet on Derby Designs. Dewey Decimal System cont. NLS Students will describe the history of the Dewey Decimal System, what section of the library it is used in, and how that section is divided. Worksheet booklet on the Dewey Decimal System. Large group activity challenge. Author Study Patricia Polacco Chris Van Allsburg NLS Students will name books that the featured author has written, and discuss aspects of the author s life. AR tests to check comprehension. Visits to the author s website. Plagiarism/Copyright (4 th gr.) NLS Students will explain the definition of plagiarism and copyright. Plagiarism/Copyright skit as a large group.
