2 Introduction Structured premise cabling systems have become state of the art in modern office buildings. These standard based universal systems have emerged from early proprietary systems. Even in the home networking sector a network is well on the way to become the norm. The corresponding peripheral technology is affordable for a large section of society and DSL technology combined with the Internet provide the motivation for investment. Over the years there have been constant changes to the cabling, the connectors and even the applications. For this reason, standards such as EN for structured premises cabling systems have, to a large extent, ensured planning safety. The first issue in 1995 represented a huge milestone in consolidating the diverse network systems that prevailed at the time and in 2002 the second issue came into force, with several sections having been updated to reflect technology changes and bandwidth requirements. Despite these standards, the requirements of the end user are frequently different, making it increasingly difficult to service these extremely divergent characteristics with standard cabling systems. Therefore, open communication systems always were, and still are, the most suitable connectivity option as they allow the client to take into account technological changes and enable them to adapt to each event. This concept led to the development of the universal AMP CO Plus System, which has now been in widespread use for over 10 years. During this time many improvements and changes have been made to incorporate technical changes into the system. The 10 millionth AMP CO Plus insert was presented at Cebit Gigabit Ethernet over Twisted Pair Cabling is currently occupying the standardisation committees, with the Link classes E and F being redefined and the requirements of the cabling systems increasing. AMP CO already meets these link performance requirements, once again demonstrating its impressive capability and flexibility. Thorsten Punke Dipl. Ing. 4 Bay Networks Bay Networks Bay Networks 1. Area of Application Structured premises cabling systems are described in the ISO and EN Standard. Two types of topology are mentioned. 1. Centralized Network Architecture 2. Individual users are connected directly or via passive secondary distribution. There is a central communications room where all the cables converge, which also houses all the active equipment. However, in approximately 75 % of the installations a mixed structure is used for a variety of reasons. Twisted pair copper cable is generally used for horizontal cabling from the floor distributors, with fibre optic cable deployed to create a collapsed backbone to these distributors radiating from a centralised building distributor. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of cabling and it is up to each individual user to weigh up the pros and cons. 4

Cabling Standard and 10 Gigabit Ethernet Category 6 in 2002 was the last milestone before the forthcoming Class E A and 10 Gigabit over Copper (IEEE 802.3an) became the next huge step in the Ethernet history. This is again a challenge for a lot of systems and technologies. For the first time the global market recognises the advantage of shielded systems even in IEEE. The existing Class F is one recognised definition which fully supports 10 Gigabit over the 100m without any limitation. As well most of the shielded Category 6 systems will support 10 Gigabit up to 100m, while all category 6 UTP Systems have limitation up to 37m. Because of the increased bandwidth and sensitive coding mechanisms used in communication systems, EMC compliance is a critical design objective for any IT system. For 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper, EMC compliance is for the first time a challenge and the impact on cabling systems is enormous. 5
6 But why is this? Two key issues influence the 10 Gigabit Ethernet transmission: Alien Crosstalk Background noise Both parameters affect EMC compliance. As the transmission frequency increases, cables and components in a communication channel will disturb each other. It is like NEXT within cable. The worst case is shown in Picture Table 1a: 10G Support of cabling systems IEEE 802.3an 3a. One cable is surrounded by 6 other ones. This configuration is common practice as cables are installed in this way. UTP cabling systems have just one method of protection from electrical disturbance - the twist rate of the pairs. The twist rate is unable to mitigate effectively the interference from adjacent pairs at high frequencies. This is the cause of the major problem for these UTP systems at the required frequencies for the new application. STP systems have an electrical shield, which surrounds each pair and the cable (under the jacket). The shields are able to suppress the electrical interference effectively. 7 The cabling systems are able to mitigate some of this electromagnetic noise. The question now is, how much? The indicator is coupling attenuation. This parameter describes the ability of a cabling system to suppress electromagnetic noise. Coupling attenuation is applicable to both shielded and unshielded cabling systems. AMP CO Plus already meets the requirements for both new link classes. Even the new Class F A with a bandwidth of 1000 MHz has been successfully tested by GHMT, 3 rd party lab. This once more demonstrates the future potential of the system. 7
8 3. Horizontal Cabling Typical horizontal cabling describes the infrastructure from the floor distributor to the wall outlet. Conventional cabling systems are firmly connected to a jack or a wall outlet. All cables are normally terminated in the patch panel. The RJ 45 connector interface is used and the cable and connector impedance is 100 Ω nominal. However, this has not always been the case, with other connector interfaces on the market including 93 and 150 Ω. Furthermore not all services use all pairs. In addition, the link class must be established regardless of further technical changes, which may arise in the future. Standard systems are unable to respond to these changes. Only open communication systems are in a position to respond to these changes. This is the main characteristic of the AMP CO Plus System. 4. What is AMP CO Plus? Pic. 4: Principle of AMP CO Plus The most striking difference between the AMP CO Plus System and standard systems is that the communication interface is variable. The cable is terminated at the edge connector (see page 10), which constitutes an open communication interface on both ends. The application is then determined by the adapter insert which provides many benefits for the user and networking administrator. This design enables the cable to be used in different ways. This type of connection conforms to all relevant standards as all 8 conductors are terminated. The edge connector is used in the patch panel and wall outlet 8

The ISO 11801/EN Standard specifically refers to the possibility of changing the service by changing the inserts. A range of inserts is available which provide a number of different application options. In standard systems the cable is fixed and connected to the jack. This means that it is not possible to make changes, with the component quality e.g. category and link class also being fixed. Pic. 6a: conventional outlet Pic. 6b: conventional jack 9
10 5. Technology and Performance This flexible design offers many advantages compared with standard systems. At the heart of the system lies the edge connector Mark ll, to which the cable is terminated. In addition to full shielding, the edge connector also has PiMF Management, ensuring all foil pairs are individually separated and shielded from each other. Pic. 7: Shielded edge connector The performance of the Mark II far exceeds all category requirements and offers huge potential for future developments. Lab tests show a performance up to 2GHz. Given a future definition of 1000 MHz for link class F and the fact that even developments such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper do not require a higher link class, there is clearly sufficient reserve available. 11 6. Link Performance The design of the AMP CO Plus System, as detailed above, enables all link classes to be installed without the need to specify connectors. Pic. 10a: Link performance of the AMP CO Plus System In general practice today, a 600 MHz PiMF cable is most frequently used, however the use of a 1200 MHz cable is recommended. The cable is connected at each end to the edge connector providing a link up to class F. As well the forthcoming Class F A with 1000 MHz is recognised. The most important point is the cable. As higher the bandwidth is, as longer the system can be used. The best available cable is a PimF 1200 MHz AWG 22. This cable provides best technical performance on the market as well as excellent CATV conditions. Reason is a very low attenuation, the most limiting factor for CATV transmissions up to 100m. See page 30 for more information. Since as yet no data application requires this bandwidth, a category 5E insert can be used, resulting in a class D link with 10/100/1000 MBit Ethernet application support. Then, when a higher link class is needed, the system can be upgraded to either link class E, E A, F and F A. Further configurations and options can be found on the following pages. 12 7. Choice of connector interface The fact that two connector interfaces are standardized for link class F in the EN Standard shows how important this choice is. A TERA insert is already available for the AMP CO Plus System. Pic. 11: TERA TM Insert AMP CO Plus users have a completely independent choice of which connector interface to use, when to use them and for what application. As well as standard RJ 45 inserts in both single and double variants, it is also possible to operate CATV and D-sub9 inserts as well. Pic. 12: Triple Insert CATV/Ethernet/Telephone The AMP CO System exploits the fact that many services only use 2 of the 4 available pairs, so either a fully loaded single insert or an application specific dual insert can be used. This makes the system very flexible and economic because of the different utilization. A look back in time, to when modern data system were conceived, will show just how important this flexibility is. In addition to various RJ 45 connector interfaces, IBM and BNC connectors, there were also different impedance environments from 93 Ω to 150 Ω that required impedance matching. The need for awkward and susceptible external converters can be avoided by changing the insert with integrated impedance matching. The AMP CO system has always enabled all environments to be supported over a single network infrastructure. Pic. 14: RJ 45 Insert 12
13 8. Application Options Many different applications can be supported. Pic. 15: Different Inserts Application Scenarios: On the following pages you will find examples of possible configurations. The colour blue denotes an alternative configuration. The cable length is dependent on the respective link length. The number of wall outlets determines the number of patch panels. In chapter 19 you will find concrete examples of designs with some case studies. Note: The following examples based on DIN Outlets and RAL 7035 patch panels. In case of another installation environment, please check the EMEA catalogue or page in this book. 13
14 Scenario 1: 2 cables per work area This scenario is frequently found, as it is possible to use the triple insert for one link. In addition to telephone and fax connections, an Ethernet or fast Ethernet connection can be made. The remaining outlet is provided with a blind insert and can be activated for future applications. 15 Scenario 2: 2 cables per work area Another option is to use one dual and one blind insert. This configuration is adequate in many cases and ensures cost effective use of cables. 16 Scenario 3: Extending the reserve port One possible future scenario is that one user will require Gigabit Ethernet. According to the current transmission definition, this protocol uses all 4 pairs. This option is very economical, since the migration towards Gigabit Ethernet occurs slowly. The use of Gigabit Ethernet in the work area demands powerful backbone and/or campus cabling, which must be upgraded first in many cases. 16

By extending the second port, other services can be used in addition to CATV. 19 Scenario 6: 3 cables per work area As well with three cables some efficient configurations are possible. Three cables are commonly used in a double work area or a work zone. Then this efficient configuration can be used, giving a clear demonstration of the benefits of the system. 20 Comparison: AMP CO Plus and a conventional cabling system Only 3 cables are used instead of 8. As a result, there is more room in the pathways and considerably less fire protection is required making it more economical. Additionally there is also less cable to lay and terminate; a clear demonstration of one of the many financial advantages of the AMP CO Plus System. 21 9. Technical performance overview The following summary shows what options the system has to offer. It also clearly demonstrates that the installed link is the constant, whilst the adapter insert represents the variable, thereby making all link classes from D to F possible. Class G refers to 1200 MHz non standard solution. Trends and technologies come and go and the only certainty is that they will keep on changing. Best example is the current Class E A and F A definition driven by 10 Gigabit Ethernet. While AMP CO fully supports all present definitions of both classes (page 7), all existing UTP systems do not support 10 Gigabit up to 100m. 21
22 10. Power over Ethernet Power over Ethernet (PoE) is one of the latest technologies that will quickly penetrate the market and will be of major consideration for network designers and planners in the future. PoE means that power (energy) as well as data is supplied by the twisted pair data line. The exact specification allows for 48 V (57 V max.) at maximum 15,4 Watts. The IEEE has produced the 802.3af standard for PoE, in which three different options for deploying PoE are defined: Endpoint PSE Mode A Endpoint PSE Mode B Midspan PSE Mode B 10.1 Endpoint PSE Mode A In this mode the operating voltage is supplied over data pairs 1,2 and 3,6. This mode is also known as phantom powering and is the required mode for services that do not provide any spare pairs (i.e. Gigabit Ethernet). The same applies with the double inserts for the ACO System. For example if Ethernet and ISDN are transmitted over the same cable, there are no spare pairs available. This is then the only mode that permits the data and power supply to be operated simultaneously. Pic. 23: Power over Ethernet, Mode A 802.3af 22
23 10.2 Endpoint PSE Mode B In this mode the operating voltage is supplied over the spare pairs (i.e. pairs 4,5 and 7,8). The power supply is energised directly by the switch. Pic. 24: Power over Ethernet Mode B 802.3af 10.3 Midspan PSE Mode B This mode also uses the spare pairs, but the power is fed via an additional Midspan Unit. This is a good alternative for existing cable plants during the transitional period. It is however anticipated that future switches will be fitted with a PoE function. As a result, Endpoint PSE Mode A will play an increasingly important role. Pic. 25: Power over Ethernet Modus B Midspan 802.3af 23
24 AMP Netconnect has developed external Midspan power units in accordance to IEEE 802.3af. The units has some additional beneficial features: o o o o o Fully compliant to IEEE 802.3af Full power (15,4 Watt on each port) 8 port modular construction Supports 1000 Base-T Controlled and low heating radiation Because of the modular construction, the user is able to upgrade step by step as network demands grow. See page 36 for more information s. For bigger installations AMP Netconnect offers a 24 port Midspan with SNMP support. As well as the 8 port unit, all ports are fully powered with 15,4 Watt. 24
25 11. AMP CO Plus Power Multiplexing What is AMP CO Plus Power Multiplexing? A closer look at the various modes shows that: If the user uses a dual insert, there are no unused pairs as all 4 pairs are used. Consequently it is not possible to operate PSE B. The Midspan Mode also uses the unused pairs, so that is not suitable either. Therefore: only Mode A will work. Important: This statement only applies to the use of dual AMP CO Plus inserts. When single inserts are used, the system is fully wired. Pic. 26: AMP CO Power Mulitplexing Why the PoE insert? This insert ensures that the power is modulated to pairs 1,2 and 3,6 enabling the other pair to be used for data and power. The insert ensures that an operating mode compliant with IEEE af is achieved, if the source powers on Mode B. Advice for Cisco users: Cisco uses pairs 1,2 and 3,6 in non-compliant terminals. Therefore the dual Ethernet inserts can be used. Recommendation: AMP Netconnect supplies inserts with the PoE labelling so that it is always clear whether there is a PoE function or not, especially in the user work area. Most sources power with Mode A, hence there is no need for this insert. 25
26 12. Power over Ethernet and ACO Plus PoE Inserts With ACO and PoE inserts all terminals can be operated in compliance with IEEE af. 27 The configuration is for Mode B Midspan as follows: Switch (without PoE) PoE Midspan Unit ACO Patch Panel (PoE Patch Panel Insert) Link Wall outlet (PoE Outlet Insert) This type of network equipment is still not widely available and if the switches are still very new, the Midspan Mode offers the best solution in financial terms. This enables the use of the existing hardware and it is easy to provide users with Power over Ethernet. Pic. 28: Configuration with an external Midspan Unit (Mode B Midpsan) 27
28 13. TV Application An insert for video and TV applications is available for the structured premises cabling for the AMP CO Plus System. These inserts allow video signals from surveillance cameras and video recorders as well as analogue and digital television and radio channels up to the frequency band of 862 MHz to be transmitted over the structured premises cabling (Twisted Pair). Pic. 29: Triple Insert with CATV Interface The F connector used in the insert is well known in the field of satellite technology and has very good transmission properties up to approx. 2 GHz. Impedance matching of 75 Ohm (coax) to 100 Ohm (Twisted Pair) is produced in the AMP CO insert. Frequencies below 41 MHz can not be transmitted! 13.1 Technical Facts In TV engineering transmitters normally work with output signals of 75dBµV whilst receivers need a signal of 55dBµV for perfect reconstruction. This means that the attenuation of the link shall not exceed 20 db. Consequently for a purely passive link supporting a bandwidth of 862 MHz the maximum link length should not exceed approx. 25 meter, for a bandwidth of 28
29 600 MHz approx. 40 meter and for a bandwidth of 450 MHz 50 Meter for 600 MHz (Cat. 7) cables Use of Preamplifiers In order to increase the maximum range in a specific frequency band, preamplifiers with equalisation adjustment can be installed in a TV system to balance the attenuation (Pic 30). In view of the maximum permitted signal amplitude of 105 dbµv, standard signal amplifiers with a gain of up to 30 db can be used in the patch panel. This increases the link length in the frequency band up to 862 MHz to approx. 80 meters. It is clear that the attenuation increases as the frequency and length increases (90 meter link purple, 15 meter link blue). 30 13.3 CATV receiver units The permitted input levels of the receiver units shall be not exceeded. On the receiver side signals should lie within the window from 55dbµV to 72dBµV. Values above or below can have a negative impact on transmission quality. Below 55dBµV the signal is unfavourable in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ratio) whilst above 72 dbµv saturation effects can occur. On the wall outlet side there are then 2 ports available for each S 0 Bus. Since the basic version of ISDN offers 2 active channels, 4 terminals can be operated independently. This means that the cable is fully occupied, making it considerably more economical than standard cabling, which uses one cable per telephone. 35 15. Active port expansion Another key feature of the AMP CO Plus system is the outlet switch. This is plugged into the wall outlet in the place of an insert, thereby extending the connection by three switched ports. The ports offer either 10/100 or 1000 MBit/s. The switch controls the speed by auto sensing. The power is supplied via the Midspan Unit, which can of course also be used for other terminals. An example of an AMP Netconnect solution will be shown on the next page. The switch is an IEEE af compatible device and ready for immediate use. 36 Midspan Power Unit As mentioned on page 24, IEEE has defined in af as one of the modes an external Midspan Power Mode. An external solution is a great opportunity to extend the value of the existing hardware as it saves on investing in additional switches. Another good reason is the fact that the power supply and the data ports are separated. With a defined maximum of 15,4 Watt on each port, the heat dissipation is separated which may prevent some heating problems in the rack. Problems can occur within some installations if the power supply is included in the switch. If the space is limited and the rack is full, a hot spot can occur. AMP Netconnect has developed a modular solution, so the customer is able to migrate step by step as and when needed. Additionally, the modules are standardized to provide 10/100 Mbit as well 1000 Mbit/s in the auto sense mode. Even though most of the applications will use 10 or 100 Mbit/s, the option for 1000 Mbit/s is a great future proofing feature. Pic. 39: Tyco Midspan Power Unit As already mentioned above, the maximum power output is defined at 15,4 Watts per port. AMP Netconnect provides full power on all ports. All modules can be mounted in a 19-inch 1U panel. Maintenance updates, additions or changes can be done easily. A good example is the scenario shown on page 35. The outlet switch is receiving power over the data line from the Midpsan Unit. The market for remote powered devices will increase within the next years. IP cameras, IP telephones and W-LAN access points are only the start. The modular solution can grow with individual customer's specific demands and will help to keep costs down. 37 16. Multiple Service Provision Twisted pair cabling systems transmit information to support different services. Each cable consists of 4 pairs. The services utilize the cables in different ways. For example, an analogue telephone needs only one pair, whilst Gigabit Ethernet requires all four. Many services use two pairs. In theory then, virtually any combination is possible to deliver a wide range of services to a single work area. The example above is very common because it is so easy to provide two networks services with one cable. As Fast Ethernet is defined on pairs 1,2 and 3,6 the correct assignment is provided by the Fast Ethernet Dual Insert. 38

40 Standard systems only make use of one part of the cable. Since a very inhomogeneous terminal culture prevails in many environments, only a small percentage of the cable is fully used throughout the world. In other words, approx. 90% of the cable is used to only 50% of their capacity! Even if the numbers of terminals increase, using the cable to 100% capacity, there still remains a huge unused potential. With AMP CO Plus the infrastructures can always be used to full capacity. 17. Cost-effectiveness The cost-effectiveness of every investment must be scrutinized and the following points taken into consideration. Lifetime of the equipment Amount of investment Additional cost of modifications/secondary cost Utilization of the potential It is worth that frequently only the one-off investment costs are taken into consideration. In fact in many cases only the material cost of the initial investment is considered. Consequently, what at first appears to be a good investment can in the end turn out to be more costly. A good example is 10 Gigabit Ethernet. A lot of existing Cat. 6 cabling systems are unable to support this. A re-cabling is necessary. AMP CO Plus is ready now without any modification. The serviceable life of the equipment varies, but can be up to a maximum of 10 year. And this is where AMP CO Plus has the advantage. There are two financial advantages compared with standard systems: In the initial investment: Less cables Less space required in the cable trays, so the cable ducts can be smaller Less fire-proofing and fire load No ANEXT testing necessary therefore fully 10G certification Long-term: Adaptation to new technologies and new standard compliant connector interfaces Adaptation to higher bandwidth requirements No costly re-cabling required The key aspect here is the freedom of choice! 40
41 There is no need to decide immediately whether a complete Class F installation is necessary, or indeed to choose the interface, as the user can make these decisions at a later date. In this particular example, two connector interfaces are standardised for class F link performance. (See page 12). Pic. 42: Comparison UTP and STP Cables Here too selective insert choice also has the advantage that it is only necessary to activate those ports that are going to be used. This is the case if an upgrade from Cat.6 to Cat. 7 is necessary or when some users have a specific demand. Users of the AMP CO Plus System can take their time and make the investment selectively if necessary. With conventional systems on the other hand, complete panels and wall outlets have to be changed. History shows that this was the case in 2000, when Gigabit Ethernet was ratified. The same will happen for 10 Gigabit Ethernet, since most of existing Cat. 6 systems will not support this. Finally conventional systems have to be re-certified. This is not necessary with the AMP CO System. Cable trays and fireproofing When designing cable networks the designer must calculate the correct size of the cable trays and ducts or the corresponding space in the raised floor. Many cables can rapidly accumulate here and in recent years the cables have been getting thicker and thicker. A PiMF 600 MHz cable is with 7,3 mm even now lower in diameter then the newest generation of UTP cables with approx. 7.8 mm and a 1200 MHz cable now has a diameter of 8,1 mm, so it is critical to provide adequate dimensioning of cable pathway systems. AMP CO Plus helps to keep the fill ratio at a minimum. The fire sealing is applied in the openings between two parts of a building. The more cable there is, the larger the opening and therefore the more fire-proofing required. Positive side effect: The overall potential fire load is reduced at the same time. Pic. 43: Comparison 30 to 15 cables in a cable duct If you start with 3 cables for 1-2 work areas, as outlined in the example on pages 20-21, the same number of ports would be achieved with 8 cables in standard systems. 41
42 With reference to picture 43, 5 complete areas could be equipped with the 15 cables. In standard systems 40 cables would be needed, that is 10 more than in the lower cable channel in illustration 41. In installations with several hundred connection points, it is easy to see how full the channels become. With 10 Gigabit Ethernet a new important point has to be considered: Complete certification on the side for the forthcoming Class E A and F A. This means particular ANEXT and AFEXT testing. This is in the filed not possible, as each potential victim cable has to be known and secondly 6 additional testes are necessary. All shielded systems as well AMP CO fulfil those requirements by design. There is no additional testing necessary. Certification can be done as today. Pic. 44a: The real world, where is the victim? There are economic benefits of up to 30%. Right from the beginning the investment is smaller with AMP CO Plus than with a standard system, due to the reduced quantities of cable and secondary costs such as cable path ways, fireproofing and certification costs. This also emerged in the comparison of systems described on page 41. At the same time, the serviceable life of the system is of course longer, without the need for expensive re-cabling projects. 43 18. Integration in designer faceplate series Today s users often choose a designer faceplate series, which can be selected to match the interior of the room or building. It is important to ensure that the respective range is fully compatible with the communication outlets. As a result of years of working in cooperation with the faceplate industry, a solution for the AMP CO System is available in most cases. A matching insert is generally available for the chosen range for inclusion in the installation kit. On the website at you will find an AMP CO Plus configurator for DIN style environment which are standard on the German and Austrian markets, but is often used in many other markets. In addition there are solutions for EDIZIOdue, which is applicable for the Swiss market. The French market is served with the Mosaic solution. For the Australian and New Zealand markets, appropriate faceplates (Clipsal 2 nd series etc.) are also available. Note: In any case of uncertainty, please contact your local sales office in the respective country. See page 60 for details. Solutions are also available for the under floor area, where kits are compatible with most of current solutions and providers in the market. This guarantees that the product is compatible with most of the current designer faceplate series. 43
44 19. Designing with AMP CO Plus Designing with AMP CO Plus is different from standard systems. There are some specifics, which you need to be bear in mind. A summary of the most important are: One cable must be connected to each outlet A link (outlet-panel) contains always the same inserts (except the telephone) Certification always takes place with the single insert Example I A new building with 200 work areas is to be constructed. There will be 3 cables per work area. A data/telephone connection and a fully wired insert will be installed in each work area. The third outlet will be reserved for future applications and fitted with a blank insert. It is assumed that a 1200 MHz cable (AWG22) and an average cable length of 60 m will be installed. Frequent moves create ever-changing situations yet this configuration allows an extra employee to be connected at any time. The two spare ports leave all future connectivity options open, such as Power over Ethernet or CATV applications. Installation With higher frequencies and more sensitive services the installation is one important part to provide a certain performance. AMP Netconnect provides a special tool to terminate the edge connector always with the same quality and makes installations as easy as possible. ACO tool The procedure is as follows. Cable preparation 1. As usual the cable has to be prepared. 2. The Shielded edge connector and the cable have to be placed in the mould 3. Activate the pistol grip. 47 20 Testing Procedure The design of the ACO Plus system requires the following testing procedure to be followed. All links shall be certified with a single insert. The insert x shall be used for certifying a Class E link, x for Class F. Certification with AMP CO This procedure is absolutely essential in order to include all requisite parameters and to be compliant to ISO and EN For instance, it is not possible to measure POWERSUM values with a dual insert. Once the certification has been completed successfully the desired insert can be mounted on the wall outlet and the patch panel. It is necessary to follow the instructions of the testing instrument manufacturer. The following points shall be considered before start with testing: Condition of test cables and adapters Calibration of the test equipment Current status of the software Correct settings of the parameters Testing above 500 MHz Testing above this frequency is sensitive and care shall be taken into consideration. All new existing testers (August 2006) on the market are able to measure up to 1000 MHz, but they do it with a measurement uncertainty up to 5 db! This means in regards to interpretation of results that this range is around the shown value. In other words, even results closed to the limits may have enough headroom and opposite. This means that for certain parameters (e.g. R L ), this range in measurement uncertainty is nearly the same as the expected value at 500 MHz! For class F and F A the only allowed method is a channel test, hence the patchcords have a tremendous effect. Make sure that they are always in good conditions. ANEXT field testing As all shielded systems have a superior coupling attenuation, field testing of ANEXT is not necessary. It s fulfilled by the shielded design, while all UTP systems have to be tested. 47
