Polyphony Tutors Nikki Baudains Voice Nikki s background is in finance, but she has always had a passion for music, especially singing. Having been a member of the Holmchase Singers since 1985, her hobby became her profession in 2006 when she completed her ABRSM teaching diploma. She then began teaching Singing and Music Theory privately and went on to gain her ACTL qualification in She has also been part of the peripatetic music staff of St. Michael s School since Hannah Campbell Voice (Pop) Hannah, an ex JCG pupil, graduated from the London School of Musical Theatre where she was trained by one of the West End's leading vocal coach's, Toni Pedretti A.R.S.M. As a professional singer Hannah has supported Will Young, Beverley Knight, Olly Murs & Alexandra Burke and recorded vocals on Joe McElderry's Album SMILE and the X-Factor Finalists show, Since returning to Jersey she has established herself as a professional singer in a number of successful local bands including 'Honeybun', 'ABBALOO', 'Inside Job', 'Optimistic Voices' and 'RoodMood'. Emmanuelle Dumas Cello Born in Montauban, France, Emmanuelle studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Since moving to Jersey in 2004 with Chris George, following completion of the Masters course, they have together initiated various musical activities on the island and together they manage the Jersey Academy of Music. Recent alumni successes include two cellists awarded entry into Chetham's School of Music. Emmanuelle also teaches cello at St Michael's School, Beaulieu Convent School and JCG Prep.
Sian Goldhawk Voice Mrs Goldhawk attended City University, London and studied voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has sung for the London Symphony Chorus, and most recently performed in the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Sian has had the privilege of performing under world renowned conductors including Sir Colin Davies, Sir Simon Rattle and Eric Whitacre. Sian joined the staff of JCG in 2014 as librarian and exams officer. She has involved herself fully in the musical life of the College, helping with JCGlee rehearsals and singing with the Chamber Choir. Sian is very passionate about helping young people to understand and develop their voice in order to reach their full potential as both singers and performers. Katherine Grant Piano, Flute and Theory A local girl, Katherine studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Academy of Music. She pursued a freelance career as a flautist before undertaking a PGCE in Secondary Music at the Institute of Education (UL). Her education experience includes peripatetic teaching, KS3, GCSE and A level classroom teaching and general music tuition at infant and junior level. She was Head of Music at a local secondary school from 2004 until Emma Hayward Piano and Theory Emma started teaching the piano in 2001 and completed the ABRSM Teaching Diploma in Her favourite part of the job is helping students develop their own musical styles and interests as she believes that making music shouldn't just be about taking exams. She runs a thriving private practice in addition to her work at JCG.
Eva Hsieh - Percussion Eva studied percussion at the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal College of Music, London. She has won numerous soloist competitions and given many concerto performances with orchestras across the UK. Eva has experience as a percussion and piano teacher working for the Derbyshire Music Partnership, and since moving to Jersey in 2013 she has been working to develop percussion playing in a number of local schools. She is currently teaching percussion and piano at St Michael s Prep school, Jersey Academy of Music, JCG Prep and VCP where she also coaches the percussion ensemble TWIGZ. Sarah Le Feuvre Flute, Bassoon & Theory Sarah is an award winning British bassoonist, who studied at the Royal College of Music and at the University of Los Angeles, and has performed and broadcast with many distinguished English orchestras and ensembles. Sarah has also taught bassoon at Marlborough College and pioneered a live music experience for young children, before settling with her family in Jersey. She plays most wind instruments but specialises in fute and bassoon, and has formed Jersey s first bassoon ensemble since arriving on the island, thus raising the bar of our cultural standards a considerable notch! Sarah Le Fondre Oboe A former student of JCG, Sarah achieved a 1 st class Honours degree in Music and Business Administration. Since returning she has combined private oboe teaching with full time employment and, more recently, caring for her young children. Her emphasis is on adapting lessons to suit the individual in order to inspire musical enjoyment and develop personal confidence through playing. She is a committed oboe and Cor Anglais player in the Jersey Symphony Orchestra amongst other ensembles.
Pippa Lumbard Brass Born in Jersey, Pippa studied the French Horn at Trinity College of Music, gaining both undergraduate & postgraduate diplomas in performance, plus a Licentiate in Brass Teaching. Since returning to Jersey 8 years ago Pippa teaches Brass and coaches ensembles at many of the private schools on the island, including at St Michael s, St George's, JCG, Beaulieu & De La Salle. Julie Millow - Piano and Violin Julie studied piano and violin at the London College of Music before returning to Jersey to begin teaching in Since then she has taught privately and in several local schools and has also been in demand as an accompanist. Although not a full time member of a band, Julie can be seen deputising for various local ensembles and has been very involved in amateur dramatics in the island, regularly playing for shows. Louise Risby Piano Louise studied Music at Manchester University, and went on to achieve the Dip. ABRSM in Piano Teaching and the Advanced Certificate in Piano Performance. She moved to Bermuda in 1994, working for many years at the Bermuda School of Music, and also as an accompanist and orchestral percussionist. After also living in Gibraltar for several years, Louise moved to Jersey in April 2010, with her husband and two children. She regularly works as an accompanist for choirs, for exam students and has played piano and keyboards for many musicals in Jersey for The Green Room Club, JADC, Timpanali and Drama Lab.
Liz Shea Voice Liz studied music at City University, London where she had the privilege of studying both voice and violin at the Guildhall School of Music. She is a professional singer-songwriter whose versatility and musicianship has enabled her to sing both classical and popular repertoire professionally, both on national television and radio. She returned to singing teaching after a break with her family and is passionate about enabling young singers to develop sound technique and in the process enjoy releasing their voice s full potential. Steven Thomas Clarinet & Saxophone Steven studied clarinet and saxophone at the Birmingham Conservatoire for 4 years specialising in teaching and performing, winning the chamber music competition in his final year as part of a clarinet quartet. On completion of the course he continued at Bath completing a PGCE. His first teaching appointment was as Head of Music in an upper comprehensive and he has also taught in Jamaica, in Cayman Brac as the music specialist and in Hereford as Head of Music for the past 12 years. It was here that in 2009 he was recognised by the Pearson Teaching Awards as being the best Secondary School Teacher in the West Midlands. His musical experiences/tastes are varied, from playing under Sir Simon Rattle to performing in the Kingston Jazz Club in Jamaica, but it is working with young people that he feels is his vocation and he says, It is a pleasure to be teaching at JCG. Phil Vibert Rhythm Guitar Phil attended The Musicians Institute in California and graduated with an Associate Degree. Phil was fortunate enough during his time in the States to be taught by and play with some of the world s most respected guitarists including Brett Garsed, Danny Gill and Scott Henderson. 10 Polyphony Tuition How does it work? At JCG, the Polyphony instrumental, vocal and theory tuition is based on weekly rotational timetables with lessons scheduled throughout the school day. We recommend that no more than a total of 2 instrumental lessons are scheduled during the school day to avoid missing too many academic lessons. Details of the instruments offered, tutors and fees can be found in the current brochure. Polyphony Tutors and/or the Administrator commit to provide:- A timetable of Polyphony lessons prior to the start of lessons a paper copy and by . Timetables are also displayed on the Polyphony notice board outside music room C2 (Bandroom). Well prepared lessons starting at the scheduled time. Encouragement and clear guidelines of how much practice is required and which areas to practise for the following lesson. It is a good idea for the student to provide a notebook for this purpose or alternatively they can use their school planner if they bring them to their lessons. If a tutor is absent, a notice will be displayed in the music department during the day and any lessons missed will be rescheduled in the first instance; if this is not possible by the end of the term then a credit or refund will be due to you. Rescheduled lessons will be posted on the Polyphony notice board and ed to you. Recommendations for exam entry after discussion with the student and parent. Recommendations for theory lessons where appropriate. Recommendations for joining an appropriate ensemble it is expected that students having instrumental/vocal lessons at JCG will join an ensemble as recommended by their instrumental tutor and/or the music department staff. Polyphony Tutors and the Administrator expect the student/parents to commit to:- Regular practice between lessons the amount and time will vary between instruments and grade levels. Your tutor will advise the appropriate amount for your level. Payment of the term s lessons in advance. Invoices will be sent requesting payment by the first week of term and late payments will incur a 10% surcharge. Attend lessons at the scheduled time, having allowed time to sign out at the school office and collect their instrument/ music etc.
Attend an extra-curricular ensemble as recommended by your tutor or the music department staff. NB there are opportunities for pianists within some ensembles. Advise the administrator of any change in address. Advising the tutor or administrator immediately (but with a minimum of 72 hours notice) of any school activity that might clash with a Polyphony lesson. Please note that no refunds will be given for lessons not attended by the students except in the case of a College organised activity in which case the student must give 72 hours written notice. This can be by to the Polyphony Administrator. If less than 72 hours notice is given, it may be possible to try to rearrange the lesson but if this is not possible then no refund will be due. Other Terms and Conditions In the event of school closure due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control, a refund will not be given Cancellation of tuition all students will be expected to complete a full term of lessons with notice to stop to be given by the half term prior to stopping. Failure to do so will incur a charge equivalent to the following half term of tuition. Notice can be given by . Polyphony is not able to accommodate requests not to be withdrawn from certain curriculum lessons. The exception to this would be where class exams are scheduled and the usual 72 hours written notice will be required. NB Please retain this copy for your records
